Contradictory to what its name might suggest, Greenland is a land of ice. It is the largest island on the planet, located in the Arctic Circle - where visitors are guaranteed an unforgettable holiday experience. During the summer, ice, glaciers and icebergs break up and drift through the fjords, creating unique sceneries. Together, Iceland and Greenland create an interesting contrast between fire and ice, a splendid opportunity for travelers to explore the different characteristics of what the northern part of the world has to offer. A note about travelling to Greenland Greenland offers a different type of travel experience to what you might expect. Its remote location and island status means that virtually all items must be imported; hence, even everyday items cost more than they do even in Iceland or Denmark (which Greenland is a part of). Also, accommodation tends to be small in size (again, because of high cost of importing building materials), and service often is less formal than you will find elsewhere. Greenland is, however, a fascinating and breathtaking destination, and we’re confident that its amazing natural wonders will mitigate any minor inconveniences you may experience during your stay. Kulusuk – East Greenland The Kulusuk area is a nature lover’s paradise. The island is situated east of the entrance to the spectacular ice-filled mmassalik fjord, where the main settlement of the primitive Inuits was discovered in 1884. Kulusuk village, with its population of less than 300 inhabitants, is quite untouched by foreign influence - and catching seals, whales and polar bears remains an important source of income for the vast majority of the families who live there. As with the other villages in the East part of Greenland, this is where one can come closest to the original culture of Greenland. Duration: 2 days / 1 night Included: Return flights ReykjavikKulusuk. 1 night at Hotel Kulusuk with full board. Transfer to/from hotel in Kulusuk. Light refreshments on board aircraft. Departures: Daily except Sunday (no flights to/from Kulusuk on Sundays). Additional nights possible. Ammassalik – East Greenland Ammassalik is the largest town in East Greenland, with about 1,400 residents. It lies just south of the Arctic Circle, boasting long hours of daylight in the summer and the splendor of the northern lights in the winter. The town is beautifully situated in a protective fjord with high mountains surrounding it on all sides. It is split in two by a river, which flows through the valley of flowers behind the town. This valley contains a unique variety of Arctic flora, and is an ideal place for walks of all lengths. Ammassalik is only a ten minute helicopter ride from Kulusuk, but this short light is one of the most scenic expeditions imaginable as you cross the ice-filled sea separating these two mountainous islands. Duration: 3 days / 2 nights Included: Return flights ReykjavikKulusuk. Return helicopter flight Kulusuk to Ammasslik. 2 nights at Hotel Ammassalik with full board. This village, on the UNESCO World Heritage list, is beautifully situated at the mouth of a 40-kilometre ice fjord filled with enormous icebergs which are formed from the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere Sermeq Kujalleq. It is one of the sea. Ilulissat is located on the west coast of Greenland, 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. 4,000 people live in Ilulissat with no less than 6,000 sled dogs. This is an eloquent statement of the importance of the dogsled as a means of transport, even in a large modern town such as this.
