Previously, she ran Firebird Theatre Company, a professional non-‐profit company, which performed adaptations of myths and folktales to young audiences throughout Southern California. She ran theatre workshops and created plays on Skid Row, at a probation camp for young male offenders as well as at a number of community sites. She is currently the director of El Teatro de la Realidad, a community-‐based theatre company originally founded as political street theatre to protest the U. S. intervention in Central America in the 1980’s. The Teatro was later transformed into a therapeutic theatre company, presenting plays about issues of c oncern to the participants and community such as domestic violence, incest, immigration, and gang warfare. Mostly performed in Spanish, often at the Plaza Olvera in downtown Los Angeles, the Teatro has participated in a global project directed by Dutch author Eugene van Erven, featured in Community Theatre: Global Perspectives (Routledge in 2000). The company traveled to Holland appearing at Rotterdam’s International Arts Festival (2001 and 2008). ________________________________________________________________________________________________ KAMRAN AFARY, PhD, received his Ph.D. in Performance Studies at Northwestern University. Prior to that, he spent twenty years as a documentary producer and news editor. Awarded the 2014 Lambda Pi Eta Best Teacher of the Year Award, Dr. Afary has taught c ourses in performance studies, rhetoric, cultural studies, gender and communication, qualitative research, print, broadcast, and convergence journalism to name a few. His book Performance and Activism: Grassroots Discourse After the 1992 Los Angeles Rebellion (Lexington Books) was recently favorably reviewed in Theater Journal. Committed to teaching and research with a diverse student population, Dr. Afary encourages multi-‐ethnic, multicultural forms of social and cultural activism leading to performance and teaches about Boal’s theatre of the oppressed, documentary theatre, drama therapy, interpretive auto-‐ethnography, and social media, He is a faculty advisor for both Communication Studies and Theater and Dance Studies majors. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ JOE QUINTERO began his artistic career as an actor, performing on stage in the United States and abroad, while also appearing on film, TV and radio. His original one-‐man shows have been produced in New York City and Los Angeles. His personal artistic work inspired him to become a teaching artist, and in 2008 Joe co-‐founded B.R.I.D.G.E Theatre Project. B.R.I.D.G.E – Building Relationships and Inspiring Dialogue through Global Exchange – is an arts organization offering playwriting and acting programs to c ommunities worldwide, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and artistic communion on an international scale. B.R.I.D.G.E has facilitated exchange programs between the US, Ecuador, and Nepal, with an invitation to partner with a theatre company in Rwanda for its next global exchange program. Domestically, B.R.I.D.G.E is in partnership with the Lynwood Unified School District, providing playwriting and theatrical production programs serving the youth of Lynwood and their community. Joe and fellow co-‐founder Adam Kalesperis have been guest speakers for The Actor’s Fund, Masters Dinner Series at USC, Baylor University, and Emerging Arts Leaders Los Angeles. B.R.I.D.G.E is also featured in the International Handbook of Educational Drama and Theatre/Theatre for Change by Robert Landy and David Montgomery.
