Student Spotlights
First Year Student
Name: Nicholas J ohannes
Where are you from?: J akarta, Indonesia
What did you study for your undergraduate degree?
Public Policy and Urban Planning at the University of Southern California
Why did you choose Columbia?
One, for the location. I want to experience living in New York City after
spending the past five years on the west coast. Also, because the program is incredibly international.
Concentration? Community and Economic Development
What is your favorite part of living in NYC? I guess it is time for me to start finding out!
What is one of your pet peeves? People who cut lines.
Second Year Student
Name: Dorothy MacAusland
Where are you from?: Dedham, MA
Where did you attend school for your undergraduate degree?
Williams College, MA
Why did you choose Columbia?
I didn’t know much about the program when I applied, but I figured NYC would be
a great place to learn planning and I liked the Columbia Campus. I also already lived in NYC so it was an
easy transition.
Concentration? Physical Planning—specifically environmental land use
What is your favorite part of living in NYC? Exploring on foot, and discovering new hidden spots. Especially new restaurants, I’m very food-driven.
What is one of your pet peeves? People clipping or filing their nails on public, especially on the subway!
One piece of advice for a first year? Don’t pigeon-hole yourself. Take classes that are unfamiliar topics.
You are here to learn new things!
