April 2016 - Teurlings Catholic High School

THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER FOR PARENTS OF
TEURLINGS CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
From Our Principal...
W
e recently held several big productions on our campus, and the talent of our students, faculty, and
staff continue to amaze. The Academic Pep rally was “sweet” and honored more students than ever
before. The crowd in the gym was at an all-time high. The senior-led Passion Play was an
awesome way to begin Holy Week. Not even the weather or a new location could stop the show and it looked
like our largest attendance ever.
Construction is ongoing with our classroom project, and once the roof is covered on both buildings, the interior
work can move forward regardless of weather. The anticipated completion date is mid-July, which will give
the staff time to prepare the classrooms for the arrival of our students in August.
We invite the grandparents of our freshmen and sophomores to celebrate Mass on April 14th and juniors and
seniors on April 21st, at 1:20 P.M. in the Rebel Dome. Our annual Senior Mass is scheduled Friday, April 29th,
at 8:36 A.M. All senior scholarship offers, turned in to date, will be announced to the student body.
April also brings prom activities as they relate to Teurlings Catholic. The following is our annual plea to
parents: If you set no curfew or if you allow your children to rent hotel rooms, sponsor after- parties where
anyone who can open the ice chest or look over the bar counter can drink, and let them act as though they are
consenting adults, you are risking your child’s life. You are also risking the life of your neighbor’s or your
best friend’s child at the same time. When you let your children go to an after-party where drinking is
condoned, even though you or other parents are present, you are risking your child’s life, and the lives of other
children.
Teurlings Catholic does not sponsor, condone, or advertise any
after-party or drinking corresponding to any school activity.
Parents who permit drinking by underage children are breaking
the law, according to the state of Louisiana and the Federal
government. The school will notify the appropriate law
enforcement agency if we have knowledge of any pre- or postprom parties where alcohol may be present. Students will be
breathalyzed by uniformed security before entry to the prom.
Our students are responsible for their guests. Coaches take risks
with their play calling or game time line-up substitutions, but they
are playing a game. What are you willing to risk?

Marty Heintz - Assistant Principal
Quarter) are not allowed to leave class for a field trip
or an athletic or extracurricular event. It is the
responsibility of the parent to arrange transportation
for the student to the event after school is over. The
only exceptions are for playoff contests and activities
where the entire grade participates, as approved by
either Mr. Boyer or myself.
All of us, I believe, look at the Easter break as the
beginning of the end of the school year. While that is
generally true, this year we have a full nine weeks of
school between the Easter break and that final day of
school in May. With that in mind, here are some facts to
keep in mind.
1. School attendance and absences
5. Final Exams
Students may miss no more than 14 classes in any
subject in order to receive credit for the course,
regardless of grade. This includes both “excused”
absences where the student may make up work and
“unexcused” where the student may not make up
work. Both types of absences are included in the total.
You can check your student’s absences in RenWeb.
The only exceptions are made for extended illness,
usually requiring hospitalization and an extensive
(more than 7 day) recovery period after the
hospitalization, as documented by the attending
physician. Why? Because we must follow the state
mandatory school attendance policy.
Yes, students are expected to take exams in every
academic subject, even electives. The exceptions are
ONLY for seniors with an A for every grading period
(1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Quarter as well as mid-term exam
and conduct) and for students who placed at the
district rally. There are no final exams in
“performance” classes (athletic PE, Theatre and
Advanced Theatre, Retreat Ministry) and exams in
dual enrollment classes are often given a week or two
in advance of the regularly scheduled TCHS exams.
Yes, it is true that students who do not need to take
an exam do not have to be on campus during the
regularly scheduled exam period.
2. Skip days
6. Financial obligations
Teurlings Catholic in no way condones “skip” days by
any class or group. Do not listen to your student,
there are no sanctioned skip days and we expect our
students here at school.
No student may take a final exam unless all financial
obligations to the school are met. This includes
tuition, cafeteria payments, return of library and
textbooks, and the return of all issued sports
equipment.
3. Vacations
We do not encourage our students to miss class or
exams for family vacations; however, we do realize
that occasionally a family event (such as the
graduation of an older brother or sister) does fall on a
school day. Students who will miss any class or exam
for a family or personal event must bring a note from
the parent (or the parent may email Ann Dugas at
[email protected]) a week prior to the anticipated
absence. The note must list the reason why the
student will be absent. The student will then pick up a
“request to miss class” form from Mrs. Dugas in the
front office and that form will be brought by the
student to each teacher, who will indicate the missed
work on the form. The completed form is then
brought back to Mrs. Dugas and I approve the
request. The student is expected to return to school
with all work missed completed according to the
teacher’s directions.
7. Failures and summer school
Yes, fail a required class (English, math, science, social
studies, religion) and the student must go to summer
school. Beginning with the class of 2018, that extends
to foreign language failures, too. We can generally
accommodate students via traditional summer school
through Lafayette, St. Martin, St. Landry, and
Vermilion Parish or we can refer the parent and
student to an accredited and SACS/AdvancED online
program. Students who fail multiple classes may have
to take multiple classes in the summer or, depending
on the number of subjects failed and remediation
opportunities, may not be able to return to TCHS.
And, yes, seniors who fail a required course will NOT
be on stage for graduation ceremonies. This includes
English IV, the senior math class and Religion IV.
4. Academic probation

TECHNOLOGY
INFORMATION:
TCH students are allowed, but not mandated,
to bring their personal devices for
classroom use in accordance with the
Teurlings Technology Policy for Students
(http://www.tchs.net/resources/student-parenthandbook.cfm). Approved student devices
include laptops, tablets, Chromebooks, iPads and
Kindles (keyboard attachment
recommended). Phones are not allowed.
Suggested considerations for purchasing a
device include internet accessibility and some type
of writing and presentation application such as
Microsoft Office or Google Docs/Slides/Spreadsheets
(free with their school issued TCH Google Drive .
account). Virus protection is required on devices
that warrant it. The type/brand of device is
really a matter of personal preference.

High School in 2003. Since then he has
brought three wrestling club championship
titles to the school. He also challenges his
students academically in ways to make them
better writers. “Coach Masson is a great
teacher. He understands how to interact with
students and brings out the best in every
student.”
The former television journalist is committed
to the advancement of writers at Teurlings
Catholic. His focus is to assure, “students
graduate from TCH with the ability to create
quality papers, critiques, and analysis that
will carry them through their college
careers.”
Kent attained his B.A. from Southeastern
Louisiana University. He is a member of
National Teachers of English (NTE), the
Louisiana chapter of the American Alliance
for Health, Physical Education, Recreation,
and Dance (LAAPHERD), and the Louisiana
High School Coaches Association (LHSCA).
He and his wife Jan have two children, Bryant,
a TCH sophomore, and Elizabeth “Libby”
who is nine years old. They are members of
St. Genevieve Church. Kent is a Eucharistic
Minister and former member of the Knights of
Columbus in Kenner, LA. The Brother Martin
High School alum has been associated with
Catholic education for most of his life. “I
honestly believe the most positive influence a
teacher or administrator can have on a
student is the development of a child’s faith.
When you help students learn English, Math,
Science, you are preparing them for a bright
future and flourishing careers. When you fuse
the Catholic faith within those areas, you are
developing a Christian, which is a vital part of
our society.”
Robert Boudreaux
Outstanding Supporter of the Year
Teurlings
Catholic is
proud to
honor Robert
Boudreaux as
Outstanding
Achiever/
Supporter of
the Year.
Robert
embodies the
character and
passion of a true Rebel. He graduated from
TCH in 1969. His wife, the former Elizabeth
“Liz” Thibodeaux, is also a TCH ’69 graduate.
The Teurlings tradition goes beyond Robert
and his lovely wife. Both of Robert’s brothers
and a sister are Teurlings Catholic graduates.
Robert’s mother retired from TCH after
working in the school cafeteria for many years.
Their children graduated from Teurlings:
Lynzie 1999 and Bo 2008, who is also married
to a TCH graduate, Jordan Ray 2008. Their
first grandchild, daughter of Lynzie and her
husband Ryan, is named Genevieve (which
some say, practically pre-destines her to
become a Rebel when she grows up.)
“We are all graduates of TCH!” he proudly
states. “Teurlings Catholic High School has
provided an outstanding education for success
for our family”.
Robert has chaired the Rebel Open for the
TCHS Foundation for almost two decades. For
the past several years, he has been a volunteer
Rebel golf coach. After his very first year of
coaching, the LHSAA recognized his
committee for bringing the state high school
golf championships to the Acadiana area and
honored the committee with its “Super Sport
Award.” Other accolades include being
selected to serve on the Governor’s Council on
Physical Fitness and Sports as well as serving
as State Director for Louisiana USSSA for
twenty years, and as USSSA National President
for two terms. He was presented the
“Presidents” award in 1982 and 1993, one of
only three people to ever win this prestigious
award twice.

Elizabeth Heintz
Outstanding Student of the Year
Teurlings Catholic High
School Student of the Year
Elizabeth Heintz has used
her four years at TCHS to
develop
her
personal
philosophy: Be the best you
can be but remember that
you are still unique and,
simply, be self-confident in
who you are. “My favorite
song, More Beautiful You by
Johnny Diaz has become my
theme. The song reminds us
that true beauty is not found
on the surface, but within – and we are all beautiful in
the eyes of God, regardless of our size, hair, skin, or
features. Self-confidence comes from that knowledge.”
The daughter of Joe and Melanie Heintz, Elizabeth
admits that she comes from a very Catholic family.
“Faith is important to not just me, but to my entire
family, not only here at school or at St. Elizabeth Church
(where she is a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and Altar
Server) but in my entire life.” That faith and her strong
pro-life beliefs led Elizabeth to Camp Joshua last year
and ultimately to work with the Diocesan PULSE
movement. She currently serves as president of the
TCHS Rebels for Life, vice president of Athletes for
Christ, Chaplain of the Beta Club and is a member of the
TCHS Retreat Ministry Core Team, as well as a
Eucharistic Minister and morning prayer leader here on
campus.
At 4’11”, she may be a foot shorter than many of her
opponents on the basketball court, but she is known for
her aggressive defense and accurate three-point shot. In
track, she excels in the triple jump, 800-meter run and as
a member of the relay teams and was named to the All
State Academic Composite Teams in Basketball and
Track.
Academics, of course, are also important to Elizabeth, as
the daughter of two educators and granddaughter of two
more. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA not only at
TCHS, but since she entered school. “In addition to the
strong faith formation at TCHS, the Dual Enrollment
Program has been a strong motivating factor for me,” she
notes. Elizabeth opted her senior year to take two
additional college courses on her own time in addition to
her regular schedule, so she will finish high school with
33 hours of college credit in English, History, French,
Psychology, and Fine Arts Survey.
Attending Girls State at Northwestern last summer and
being elected as Secretary of State, Elizabeth notes, also
added to her self-confidence and helped prepare her for
leadership roles not only here at TCHS, but at the next
level. Elizabeth was also selected as September Rebel of
the Month and was a member of the 2016 TCHS
Homecoming Court. She has represented TCHS at the
Literary Rally all four years and has been offered
academic scholarships to the University of Alabama,
Spring Hill, Northwestern State, Tulane, UL, LSU, and
LA Tech, and hopes to pursue her goal of medical school
through attendance at either Spring Hill College in
Mobile or Northwestern State University in
Natchitoches.
