Bike Rodeo Thursday October 3, 2013 Mark your calendar! San Antonio Police Department Safety Patrol Officers will be performing bicycle safety inspections and students will have the opportunity to compete in a variety of skill competitions. Children who are riding with training wheels will be scored on the competition only; not the inspection. All participants are awarded spirit sticks and will be eligible for trophies and awards. Parents…Please: • Label your child’s bike and helmet with their name, grade and teacher. • Drop off your child’s bike before school at the hardtop located next to the amphitheater. • Do not park in the drive lanes. Students falling short of the 100 possible points will be eligible for up to 10 additional points for having a helmet. Acceptable helmets should have an ANSI (American National Standards Institute) or a Snell Memorial Foundation sticker on them. The maximum score for the Bike Rodeo Inspection is 100 points. There is no penalty for not having a helmet. The majority of bicycle accidents involving children do not occur with cars. They are the result of falls. We strongly encourage all children to wear a helmet when they ride because serious head injuries can occur. Description of Events Event #1 – STRAIGHT LINE TEST Event #2 – BALANCE TEST Skills Test, requiring the rider to maintain direct course through an 8 inch opening between 2 lines running parallel for 30 feet. A timed event to test the delicate balance of the rider. “The longer time at a slower pace, the higher the score” DRIVE SLOW!! Two lines running parallel for 75 feet with a width of 3 feet. Event #3 – CIRCLE STEERING TEST Event #4 – SINGLE OBSTACLE COURSE Determine the rider’s ability to steer the bicycle. Must stay between the lines. Determine the ability of the rider to use judgment and accuracy in riding past obstacles. The cones are spaced 6 feet apart. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Please consider helping with this fun event.
