By Carlos R. Gilbert Cuellar sr. elementary school Cuellar Talks Thanksgiving Thanksgiving was started with the harvest celebration of the Pilgrims and the Native Americans that took place in the autumn of 1621. Although they did have a three-day feast in celebration of a good harvest, and the local natives did participate, this "first thanksgiving" was not a holiday, simply a gathering. There is little evidence that this feast of thanks led directly to our modern Thanksgiving Day holiday. Thanksgiving can, however, be traced back to 1863 when Pres. Lincoln became the first president to proclaim the holiday. Thanksgiving is celebrated on the third Thursday of November, which is November 22 this year. S.W.A.T. It's the day before Thanksgiving, and the butcher is just locking up when a man begins pounding on the front door. "Please let me in," says the man desperately. "I forgot to buy a turkey, and my wife will kill me if I don't come home with one." "Okay," says the butcher. "Let me see what I have left." He goes into the freezer and discovers that there's only one scrawny turkey left. He brings it out to show the man. "That's one is too skinny. What else you got?" says the man. The butcher takes the bird back into the freezer and waits a few minutes and brings the same turkey back out to the man. "Oh, no," says the man, "That one doesn't look any better. You better give me both of them!’’ Knock,Knock Who’s there? AVA AVA WHO? AVA SEEN A PLAY ABOUT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING? TAG Article By Chantel W. This year TAG students are studying Greek mythology. On November 21, 2012 all of the 5th grade TAG students are going to put on a play about Greek mythology. In the Greek world they used to dress differently so in the play we will have hand-made costumes. The 4th and 5th grade TAG students are reading a novel called “Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief”. This is a book about a boy named Percy Jackson that is in the 6th grade. He gets expelled from every school he went to because of his behavior. For example, one day he went on a field trip and got expelled for firing a cannon into the buses. Cuellar’s Book Fair By Cassandra G. and Kimberly O. We’ve been interviewing Ms. Benjamin about the book fair. Guess what? The library gets 25% of the total book fair sales. The most popular books are Lego books, diaries, and Wimpy Kid books. The least popular books are Spanish books. The profits are used to pay for reading incentives, library books, labels for the books, decorations for the library, prizes for various contests and events, the AR reading program and library supplies.
