Many people mistakenly think that the Israelites were in slavery to the Egyptians for 400 years and that the 430 year time period described in Exodus (Ex 12:40-41), during which they lived in the land of Egypt, started when Jacob and his sons, at the invitation of Joseph, moved to Israel (ending, obviously, when the Israelites left Egypt to go to the Promised Land). But Galatians 3:15-17 makes it clear that the 430 year period started long before Jacob was alive (even before the birth of his father Isaac), back at the time when God made His original covenant with Abraham (Jacob’s grandpa). Therefore, the time from Jacob entering Egypt, and the subsequent time his descendants spent in Egypt, much of it in slavery, was much less than 400 years - only 215 years to be exact (see chart immediately below). 1377 Conquest of land 6 1371 Aramaen oppression 8 1363 Judge Othniel 40 3:9,11 1323 Moabite oppression 18 3:14 1305 Judge Ehud 80 3:30 1225 Canaanite oppression 20 4:2-3 1205 Judge Barak 40 4:14; 5:31c 1165 Midianite oppression 7 6:1 1158 Judge Gideon 40 8:28 1118 Abimelech 3 9:22 2. Exodus 12:40-41 states that the people of Israel were physically in the land of Israel for 430 years “to the very day.” When put together with Gal 3:15-17, this means that the event which triggered the start of the 430-yr countdown, must have been Abraham’s going down to Egypt to avoid a famine (Gen 12:10), shortly after his covenant-making encounter with God (Gen 12:1-4). 3. The forgotten 6 months - many scholars don’t take into consideration on their timelines, a roughly 6-month gap between God making His covenant with Abraham, and Abraham going down to Egypt. Abraham was 75 years old when God made the covenant with him (Gen 12:4); this means that God made His covenant with Abraham sometime in 1847. We know that the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt took place in March. Therefore, because the Israelites were in Egypt for 430 years ‘to the very day’ (Ex 12:40-41) Abraham must have also entered Egypt in March. Because of Gal 3:15-17, we know that Abraham must have travelled to Egypt within a year of God making the covenant with him. Therefore, Abraham must have gone down to Egypt in March of 1848. So there is an approximate 6-month gap between the covenant and Abraham going to Egypt. Israelites Slavery in Egypt only lasts about 120 years (colours below are not represented on the timeline) Jacob to Egypt 1633 Levi dies 1539 95 years - End of Generation Moses born 1498 40 years - New king & Slavery starts 215 years from Jacob moving to Egypt until the Exodus Exodus 1417 80 years - Kill male babies 1. Exodus 1:1-8 says that Joseph and all of his brothers died before the new king arose and the enslaving of the Israelite people started. This means that slavery could not have started before 1539, when Levi, the last of the brothers to die, passed away at age 137 (Ex 6:16). 2. Oppression slowly turns into slavery: Already during Joseph’s day, the Egyptians disdained the Hebrews to the point that they would not eat with them (Gen 43:32). When Pharaoah gave Jacob’s family the best land and free food during the famine (Gen 47:11-12), Egyptian animosity towards the Hebrews must have deepened. When the new Pharaoh arose, this animosity changed from disdain to oppression (Ex 1:11-12) and eventually to slavery with brick making (Ex 1:14). The culmination of this oppression was the decree, by Pharaoh, to kill all Hebrew male babies (Ex 1:22). This decree would have happened about 80 years before the Exodus, right around the birth of Moses (Acts 7:19-20). Of course, many have assumed that this verse means that the Israelites were afflicted in Egypt for 400 years. But Gal 3:15-17 is clear (see chart at left) that there can only be 430 years between Abraham and the Exodus, which means that Jacob and his descendants were only in Egypt for 215 years. This means that God must have considered the ‘affliction’ to start when Ishmael ridiculed Isaac, who was 5 years old (Gen 21:8-10). This interpretation is confirmed by Paul, in Gal 4:29, when he states that Ishmael ‘persecuted’ Isaac. 22 Jehoram (E) Ahaziah (E) Athaliah (E) Joash (G) (also ‘Jehoash’) 2 Kings 8:16-17 8:26 11:1-3, 12:1 12:1 Nadab Baasha Elah Zimri 855-844 844-823 22 Ahab *38 Amaziah (G) 14:1-2,17 738 727 11 52 NO KING Uzziah (G) (aka Azariah) 14:1,23 + 15:1 15:1-2 16 *14 29 616 561 559 528 527 524 517 516 55 2 31 1 11 506 0 11 Jotham (G) Ahaz (E) Hezekiah (G) 811-784 783-767 769-754 767 675 659 645 Jeroboam 2 24 2 7 days 12 823-812 *3 1 6 *38 400 years of mistreatment and slavery 430 years 901-880 1 Kings 14:19-20 Omri/Tibni 16:16-28 15:32-33 16:1-2 753-713 712-690 690 689 688-679 678-677 676-657 656-649 648-640 Ahaziah 12 28 *17 16 41 23 6m 1m 10 2 20 8 9 Jehoram Note: all the Israelite kings are evil. All of Haggai’s prophetic writings happened in the 2nd year of Darius (~439 BC) – see Hag 1:1; 2:1; 2:10 & 14. The main thrust of Haggai’s ministry (along with Zechariah) was to encourage the Jews, who were discouraged, to finish re-building the Temple (which had been destroyed under the Babylonians) – see Ez 6:14. ~438 BC (date of writing – his ministry lasted longer) Zech 1:1; 7:1. Zechariah’s writings happened in the 2nd and 4th years of Darius’ reign. Zechariah and Haggai worked together as prophets to encourage the Jewish returnees from Babylon to finish the job they had started and complete the Temple (Ez 6:14). ~438 – 436 BC (date of writing – his ministry lasted longer) 15 16 17 Zechariah Ezra Malachi Judah Judah Judah After Babylonian exile After Babylonian exile After Babylonian exile ~433 – 419 BC The book of Malachi gives no dating information. However, Malachi has always been placed last in the Minor Prophets, and there is an approximate chronological order to the 15 prophetic books. The Talmud regularly classes Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi together as the first 3 post-exilic prophet. 420s BC? Obadiah Wrote prophesy against Edom ? The book of Obadiah gives no dating information. It consists of one lengthy prophecy against Esau and all of his descendents – that they will be permanently destroyed. There are 10, however, which follow consecutively, one after the other, and which, when put end to end, give us a precise and comprehensive outline of human history from the Fall of Man (Adam’s sin) to the destruction of the 2nd Temple by Rome. When these 10 time-spans are added up, they make exactly 4000 years. These 10 time-spans are valuable pieces of information because they give us a skeletal outline of history into which the rest of the events of Scripture can be confidently and accurately placed. Ignorance about these 10 time-spans has led many scholars to make inaccurate Bible timelines which must rely, for many dates, on outside sources rather than the Scriptures. Each of these 10 time-spans is clearly defined in Scripture. 100 BC Jerusalem Destroyed (506) - no more kings Canaanite oppression (1225 - 1205) 1923 BC 300 BC 454 BC: Persians take Babylon Cyrus’ Decree: Jews rebuild Jerusalem Daniel’s 483 yr period starts 938 BC Judge Barak (1205 - 1165) 3930 BC 500 BC Kings of Judah (1848 BC) 2875 BC Noah (“to bring rest”) - 950 years The 10 Consecutive Time-spans which define the Bible’s Timeline 700 BC #20 King Zedekiah - E 11yrs(516 - 506) #19 King Jehoiachin - E 1yr(517) #18 King Jehoiakim - E 11yrs(527 - 518) #17 King Jehoahaz - E 1yr(528) #16 King Josiah - G 31yrs(559 - 529) Mordechai vs. Haman (428) #15 King Amon - E 2yrs(561-560) Esther ~30yrs (439-403?) #14 King Manasseh - E/G 55yrs(616 - 562) Darius/Xerxes/Artaxerxes ~36yrs (439 - 403?) #13 King Hezekiah - G 29yrs(645 - 617) Belshazzar (? - 454) Cyrus #12 King Ahaz - E 16yrs(659 - 646) 9yrs(454 - 445) Daniel (524-451?) #11 King Jotham - G 16yrs(675 - 660) Nebuchadnezzar 44yrs (524 - 481) #10 King Uzziah (‘Azariah’)- G 52yrs(727 - 676) Ezekiel (511-490) Temple Rebuilt 20yrs (454-434) NO KING 11yrs(738 - 728) Haggai (438) Joel?
