Don’t know many people at the guild? Volunteering at the quilt show will expose you to many of our quilters. Don’t be shy – we all need you to help make this show a success. As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work”. If you submitted a quilt, there is a minimum of one shift that you will need to work. We would love it if you can do two shifts or three shifts, or spend the whole day with us! Let’s make this year – our 40th anniversary - a spectacular show. The forms are available on our website at http://quiltersconnection.org/quiltshow.html The deadline for the form is May 15th, 2017. We will be announcing the volunteer schedule on or before May 29th, 2017. Our quilt show volunteer coordinators this year are Kathleen Walsh + G. Wong. September 11, 2017, 7 pm – Lecture: Traditional, Art, Modern – Notes from the Field For our September meeting we have invited Maria Shell to be our speaker. She currently lives in Alaska, and has a very entertaining blog https://talesofastitcher.com/ which is worth a visit, and a link there to her website where you can see her work. Maria started out as a traditional quilter, but soon found herself making abstract pieced art quilts that look surprisingly modern. Maria will share her personal journey in and about the traditional, art, and modern quilt movements. Can you be all three? Come to the lecture and find out. September 9 and 10, 2017, 9:00 – 4:00 each day at Bentley, $75 members – two one-day workshops (you may sign up for both days): Making Prints out of Solids – Lines and Shapes Using solid colored quilters cottons, students will learn how to stitch an assortment of pieced prints including stripes, chevrons, polka dots, and pointy shapes. While learning these new techniques students will also be given information about selecting a color palette, improvisational piecing techniques, and ideas for taking these techniques and creating original quilts. October 16, 2017, 7 pm – Lecture: Betty Busby http://www.bbusbyarts.com An Artistic Journey- the Unseen Betty Busby has been making her living from her art since 1976. Her 45 minute slide show covers her origins in the ceramic tile manufacturing business through to the many phases her quilting has passed through over the years. When asked what her design process is, she said, "One thing leads to another. A recent progression started with rocks. Then rocks + plants, then rocks + trees + water, then trees + rocks, then trees by themselves. (I'm) still stuck on them." I asked Betty if there was a new technique, medium, or art/craft that she would like to learn and she replied, "Always! I love learning new techniques and working with new materials. I just ordered a bunch of Reemay from a museum supply house and can't wait to tear into it." That response required me to go see what Reemay is. It turns out to be that weed barrier stuff she mentioned. This quilt I've got to see. You really have to see the detail on Betty's quilts up close to appreciate the work that goes into them. Questions are welcomed, and samples of the products used will be available for up close viewing. October 14 and 15, 2017, 9:00 – 4:00 each day at Watertown Boys and Girls Club, two-day workshop ($150 members): Multi-Media Fiber Art For several years Betty Busby been exploring the use of various non-woven materials in her fiber art. They have been a wonderful addition to traditional fabrics, extending the range of expression that can be achieved. The class will include samples of different types of non woven materials, ways to produce images with them, and methods to incorporate them to extend the range of expression that can be achieved with traditional fabrics. In addition, she has developed new ways of painting fabrics. Students will make samples using her methods and materials, and combine them with the non-wovens as desired. She will also assist students with making their own designs and patterns. The aim of the class is to give each student many exciting ideas to experiment with. Sample size pieces of the non-wovens she uses and one yard of silk habotai are provided in the class. Additional materials will be available to purchase if supply allows. There will be a materials fee of approximately $20 per person. November 6, 2017, 7 pm, Bentley University, lecture: Amy Friend www.duringquiettime.com Improvisational Paper Piecing This approximately one hour long trunk show is based on a new design approach that Amy presents in her second book, Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design. She illustrates through her quilts, how her approach to paper pieced design is used to create unique, modern quilts. January 6 and 7, 2018, 9:00 – 4:00 each day at Bentley, $75 members – two one-day workshops. Signups for the workshop will begin in September 2017. Improvisational Paper Piecing workshop with Amy Friend This workshop is based on one of the three design approaches that Amy shares in my second book, Improv Paper Piecing: A Modern Approach to Quilt Design. This class is technique and design based, all about approaching your paper pieced block designs improvisationally. You will design and sew your own block and work on a quilt layout using alternate grid work, negative space and other elements of modern design. It’s a great way to get the word out. And speaking of updates, this is a great opportunity for you to tell everyone what you’re working on. Are you in the process of making a quilt for the quilt show? Did you finish a quilt or make a quilt using a method taught through a QC class? We would love to hear about it and see it. Or maybe you have some thoughts about previous shows that would pique the interest of others and make them excited about coming to our 40th Red Ruby celebration. Let us know. I’m sure you all have some great information you would like to share with the QC community as well as other quilters. You can post things directly to the QC Facebook page using the direct link: https://www.facebook.com/quilterconnection/ If you’re not sure how to post something to Facebook, feel free to email your information to [email protected] and I would be happy to do that for you. The fabric is exclusively from the Robert Allen Nautica collection. Quilters' Connection will benefit greatly from the exposure and perhaps entice more members to join. The quilt is ours at the end of the display to raffle off, with proceeds to benefit Quilters' Connection and its programs. QC members Ellen Ackerman, Lauren Langevin and G Wong initiated this exciting project and are coordinating efforts to complete the quilt by July 15th. G cataloged all the fabric samples. Lauren designed a beautiful pattern to use with instructions for the block. We’d like to get as many QC members involved with the making of the quilt as possible. A "cutting" party is planned to cut and assemble "kits" for QC members to take home and make blocks for the quilt. These kits, which will include easy to follow instruction, will be distributed at the May meeting. Completed blocks will be collected at the Quilt Show in June. After receipt of all the blocks, a team will assemble all the blocks together and add the border and binding. Final decorative quilting will be done by Norma Biggins with her long arm. We will be documenting this project every step of the way to tell a story that will be featured in the Fabric Place Basement newsletter and Quiltations. This is a wonderful opportunity for Quilters' Connection and we are very grateful for the support of Fabric Place Basement! Thank you for your help in creating a quilt we can all be proud of which will be displayed for thousands of people to view and enjoy throughout the coming year. Blocks will be available for pick up in our May 8th meeting. We will be collecting the finished blocks at the quilt show on June 10th + 11th in the member’s room. Block Instructions 1. From the large square fabric (8” square), cut the square on the diagonal to make 2 half-square triangles. 2. Take the 14” x 1 ½” strip and sew the strip between the 2 long sides of the half square triangles. Make sure that the center strip is centered between both triangles. (Hint: Mark the center of the triangles [the long side] and the center of the 14” piece. Then pin where the center meet before sewing the pieces together to ensure the blocks end up correctly.) 3. Trim this square to 8 ¼” x 8 ¼”. 4. Take the two 8 ¼” x 1 ½” strips and sew to the top and bottom of the block. 5. Take the two 10 ¼” x 1 ½” strips and sew to the left and right of the block. 6. The finish size of the block is 10 ¼” If you have questions – please feel free to contact Ellen Ackerman, Lauren Langevin, or G. Wong ([email protected]).
