MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Any student with an allergy, asthma or anaphylaxis needs to have an action plan from your General Practitioner. Please ensure that we have updated medical information as in case of an emergency we need to
be able to provide the best care possible for your child. If there are any other medical conditions that you
think we should be aware of then please contact the College office on 9709 0100.
Please note that the back College gate will be locked at 9am. If you are dropping off your child after 9am
please ensure that you come to the Perry road entrance and sign your child in through the front office.
During pick up and drop off times please ensure that you abide by all road rules as you would do on the
roads outside of the College. We need to work together to ensure that children are safe. The roundabout
at the back carpark is to be used like any other roundabout and not cut across.

Students with Additional Needs
The school is currently undergoing a review of student performance that will further identify a number of students from varying year levels that will
require additional support to achieve the specific
educational outcomes for their year levels. These
students have been identified using a range of different assessment methods within the College including; PAT Testing, in class formal and informal
assessment, NAPLAN results, South Australian
Spelling Test, Secondary School Examinations (if
applicable) and analysis of student reports.
By identifying and supporting these students it will
allow the College to put programs and strategies in
place to ensure they are able to achieve their potential and give them better educational opportunities.
Letters will be mailed to parents on Friday 4th of
March outlining if your child is one of these children who will benefit from additional support.
To follow on from this on Thursday 10th of March a
number of very important meetings/interviews will
take place regarding the College’s commitment to
ensuring that all students will be provided with the
support that they need to achieve their potential. It
will be very important moving forwards that the
College, parents and students work together to address any concerns in this area.
Monash College - Japanese Students Visit
On Wednesday the 24th of February Mt Hira College
had a visit from a delegate of approximately 18
Japanese University students through Monash College. The students and 1 staff member spent the
morning at the college and observed some primary
and secondary school classes, had an introductory
presentation to the school by Ms. Sareh, a tour of
the school and a morning tea with a number of
staff and Year 12 students. They were very interested in observing what our system of education is
like and greatly enjoyed their classroom observations.
We had a number of our Year 12 students and all
of our official school student leadership group have
morning tea with the visitors and they were fantastic in communicating and socialising with the
Japanese students. Our students were very friendly,
respectful and polite. Thank you very much to all of
the staff and students who contributed in making
the Japanese visitors experience a rewarding one.
Overall, the visitors appeared impressed by the College and found the experience very positive.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ACADEMIC
Technology in the Classroom!
Young people today have access to
and interact with technology constantly throughout their week. They are a
tech-savvy generation. Their expertise
has made integrating this technology into classrooms quite simple. Technology is something that is
not going away, it is the ‘new language of the modern era.’ Technology is something that schools have
embraced and used properly, it is a valuable tool
for learning and teaching.
Word processing skills: Students gain word processing skills when learning to type: skills they will
need at University and the workplace.
Relationship Building: Working with technology can
foster collaboration between students and between
the student and teacher as they work together on
projects.
Inspire Leaders: Often leaders emerge who really
enjoy using technology and can help others, which
is useful to classmates and the teacher.
Higher Order Thinking: Technology time promotes
using higher order thinking skills and is a natural
form of discovery through trial and error..
Personal Responsibility: Technology increases responsibility, independence and a sense of accomplishment.
Learning Reinforcement: Technology can help reinforce instruction or be an assistive tool in the instruction through podcasts, video and multimedia.

Learning Reinforcement: Technology can help reinforce instruction or be an assistive tool in the instruction through podcasts, video

Easy Access to Educational Materials: Students can access programs on their computers or portable devices to access course work
assigned to them by their teachers.
New Technology Can Motivate Students: The use of computers and other new technological devices in class makes students enjoy
what they learn.
Increase Student Participation: Technology in education, for example portable laptops and the internet, allow students to learn and
participate whilst in and out of the classroom.
Improve Students Writing Skills: Technology can aid the writing and the editing of notes. There are applications that have inbuilt
dictionaries that will help in improving a student’s vocabulary.
Subjects Can Be Easier to Learn: It can be easier to learn new subjects using a computer and internet. Many applications have been
created to make learning of new subjects easier. Students can easily solve math equations through online match games and puzzles.
Students can learn new languages using free online language translators.
Kinesthetic Learners: Technology such as the iPad has a number of unique features that provide for interesting possibilities in teaching and learning. The motion sensor of the iPad has a number of applications for learning. Most students today would be classified as
bodily-kinesthetic learners. The motion sensor allows students to use their hands in guiding the iPad to equilibrium, balance skills, or
remote control of real or virtual robotics. Students can also attach videos, and voice recordings to their class notes.
