Stanner Track & Field – Wall of Honor James Flaherty ‘33 Patrick Reen ‘35 James R. Flaherty ’33 graduated St. Ann’s at the age of 13. He was the track manager from 1929-33. It was because of his record keeping and writing that we have the St. Ann’s records from the early 1930’s. He was the manager of the first St. Ann’s cross-country team and the first cross-country award was named for Mr. Flaherty. Mr. Flaherty relocated near San Francisco after the war. He worked as the western District sales representative for United Airlines until his retirement in 1981. He passed away in July 1991. Patrick F. Reen’s (’35) 21’ 9” long jump in the 1935 CHSAA City Champs was the school record for 28 years. According to the 1935 Beehive in a meet vs. Morris High he smashed the hundred-yard dash record recording at 10.0 seconds. He also led the 880 yard and mile relays to school record times that lasted into the 1940’s. Paddy played football for the University of Florida where in 1940 he ran back a kickoff for 100 yards against Miami, which is still a school record. He resided in Florida until his death in 1980. Br. Johannes Bergeon 1927-1935 Brother Johannes coached the St. Ann’s track team to it’s first City Championship in track (Jrmid 1931). He coached the first individual Senior City Champ Sullivan shot and the first group of great Stanner trackmen (Finnigan, Reen, Byrne, and Mullen). He was one of the founders for the New York CHSAA in the late 1920’s. He left St. Ann’s to coach track & football at Central Catholic in Lawrence Massachusetts. He is also remembered for designing the chapel at Camp Marist. He passed away in 1965. Francis Burke ‘38 William Burns ‘42 Michael O'Brien ‘42 Frank Burke anchored St Ann’s Mile Relay team at the Penn Relays to a bronze medal winning finish running a 53 second leg. He won the 440 in all the recorded dual meets of that year and scored a second place finish in the Bronx Manhattan Westchester 220 yard dash on the Manhattan College Track William Burns ran 22.5 and was out leaned at the finish by Ed Dunne of LaSalle at the 1942 Outdoor CHSAA Championships at Van Courtlandt Park. Both runner were credited with the same time. Burns teamed with McQueeny, Devany and Mugavin to capture the CHSAA Indoor 880 yard relay championship in 1:39.5 Mike O’Brien was fine Track & Field performer specializing in the hurdles and high jump. He competed in both the 120 Yard Low Hurdles and the 220 Yard Low Hurdles. He finished 5th in the 120 Yard Low hurdles at the prestigious Boys High Track and Field Games held at Boys High School Tom Crowe ‘45 Tom Crowe was distance specialist for St Ann’s. As a junior Tom finished 4th at the BMW (Bronx Manhattan Westchester CHSAA) Championships and 16th at the CHSAA Meet. He held the St Ann’s record of 13:40 for Cross Country. Martin Enright’47 Joseph Zeitler 1946-1954 Marty Enright was the Catholic High School City Champion in 1947 in the outdoor mile run. He held the St. Ann school record in the half-mile (2:04.6) mile (4:34.5) and was the 1946 BMW Cross Country Champion. Marty ran four years for Manhattan College. In 1950 he placed 25th in NCAA Cross Country Championships leading the Jaspers to a third place finish. Joseph Zeitler coached at St. Ann’s from 1946 until 1954. His junior midget team was the 1951 CHSAA City Champion. He coached many of the great Stanner trackmen including: Enright, Gates, Zeman, Devaney and Carbine. He was the National Indoor 880 Yard Champions for St.Michael’s High School and was CHSAA Champion in the High Jump clearing 5’6” and half mile. Mr Zietler passed in 2007 George Gates ‘48 Lou Campione ‘50 Pat Devaney ‘51 George Gates was the first high jumper in St. Ann’s history to clear 6’. This jump won the 1948 indoor Catholic High School City Championship. His time in he 120 yd HH (17.1) was also a St. Anns school record. Both records stood until 1961. George ran for St. John’s University specializing in the high jump. He was twice the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Champion with a best of 6’ 3 5/8”. Lou Campione was at outstanding distance runner for St Ann’s. In October 1949, he won the Fordham Cross Country Invitational “C” Race. He followed up that win with a 4th place finish in the BMW Championships in a school record 13:52 performance on the Van Courtlandt course and a 5th place run at the CHSAA Championships (13:57). On June 1st and 2nd ,1951 Pat Devany had probably the finest meets in school history. He won the Jr high jump (5’10.5”). He followed that victory with a winning leap of 19’3.75” in the junior long jump and ran a winning time of 22.9 in the junior 220 yard run leading St Ann’s to its 2nd CHSAA Weight Championship. He also won 2 events helping St Ann’s to a 2nd place finish at the Indoor 1951 CHSAA Champs. Ed Zeman ‘54 Gene Carbine ‘54 Br Jogues Cormier 1954-1972 Ed Zeman is considered the finest runner in St Ann’s history. His best times of 50.1 440 yard and 2:01.1 880 yard are the St Ann’s School Records. He won the 1954 BMW 440 Championship handing Dennis Burbabge (Mount) his only loss of the season. Zeman finished 2nd both indoors (51.5) and outdoors (50.2) at the CHSAA Championships. Ed continued his running career at Fordham U. Gene Carbine ran along side of Ed Zeman for 4 years at St Ann’s and they continued their jouney together to Fordham University. Gene held the St Ann’s records in both the indoor and outdoor 1000 yard runs (2:24) as well junior half mile (2:06.2). Gene finished 3rd in the Indoor Varsity BMW 880 (2:05.1). He was Outdoor CHSAA Champ in Junior 880 and also a many time scorer in the Junior High Jump Br Jogues is the link between the St Ann’s and Molloy Track & Field Programs. He coached aside Joe Zeitler and took the reins when Mr Zeitler moved onto Manhasset HS. He moved to assistant chair again when Mr Reinzo came aboard when Molloy opened in 1957-58. Br Jogues wore many hats, moderating the program, coaching our high jumpers and freshmen team. Paul Puletz ‘56 Mike D’Amico ‘59 Br Aquinas Richard 1960-1986 When Paul entered St Ann’s, Marty Enright ’47 held the school record in the mile (4:35.5). On March 3, 1956 the record fell as Paul ran 4:31.7 and finished 2nd in the Indoor Catholic Championships. He was 1956 Indoor Bronx Manhattan Westchester Champion, he was 3rd in the outdoor Catholics and was the school record holder in cross country (13:38). He competed for St John’s University When Mike entered St Ann’s, the shot record was 44’1.5 set by Ed Sullivan in 1929. The record was 14 feet 10 inches farther when he graduated in 1959 (58’11.5). He was the CHSAA Indoor & Outdoor Champion in the shot and the first Stanner to surpass 150’ in the discus. Mike earned All-America honors at Manhattan College in the Hammer Throw with a best of 184’11”. Br Aq’s early workouts of run 5 – 6X220 – run 5 started a multitude of Stanner Track careers with a gentile smile that led to a quiet confidence. He simply convinced over 25 years of trackmen to stick with it and to come out every day. A great deal of the success of the Molloy Track & Field program roots owe it’s beginnings to run 5 – 6X220- run 5. Frank Rienzo 1957 - 1969 Tom Farrell ‘61 James McDermott’63 Frank Rienzo was the architect that led Molloy to 10 consecutive CHSAA Indoor Championships, 3 outdoor & 3 XC championships. He coached Molloy athletes to 9 National HS Records, 5 National Championships, 2 National Team Championships & 2 Penn Relay titles. He became the coach at Georgetown and was appointed the Director of Athletics. Mr Rienzo was a prime founder of the Big East Conference. In 1961, Tom was the National HS Indoor 1000 Yard Champ. He anchored Molloy to it’s 1st Penn Relays Championship. He still hold the school’s 880 yard record (1:54.3) At SJU he was a 2 time NCAA Champion and set Indoor World records for 660 anad 880 yards (1:49.8). Tom finished 5th at the Tokyo Olympics and won the Olympic Bronze Medal in the 880 yard run at Mexico City in 1:45.4. He has retired from Zerox and volunteers at St John’s. Jim set the National Intersclastic record for the indoor two-mile run at the National Champioships in 1963.During an undefeated XC season he won the CHSAA & Eastern States Champion-ships in addition to setting the course record at Van Courtlandt (13:01.5). At Georgetown he was a member of the 1965 IC4A Championship XC Team and finished 6th at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 3000M Steeplechase. Matt Nazaruk ‘63 Br Patrick Hogan 1962 - Peter Farrell’ 64 Matt was the 1963 National Indoor Champion throwing the shot 60’.5” His indoor best 61’.75 set at the NYU Interscholastic Meet led the nation. He won the Loughlin Games, Hayes Games, St Francis Prep Meet, CHSAA Champs and the Mayors Meet His outdoor best was 61’1. He won the Queens-Iona Meet, CHSAA Champs and finished 2nd at the Penn Relays Br Pat has coached CHSAA Records in the Javelin (218’8 Franks), HJ (6’9.25 Schilling) and HH (Berrmudes (7.43 14.0), and filled any role he was asked, but Br Pat considers the fact that he has sheparded his boys and now his girls along an athletic, academic and spiritual straight path for over 40 years his greatest accomplishment. Peter set the National Intersclastic record for the 1000 Yards while winning the National Indoor Championship in 1964. He ran on Molloy’s National Record Indoor & Outdoor National Record Two-Mile Relay as well as the 1963 Penn Relay Championship Team. He was a 2 time NCAA All American at Notre Dame and since ‘78 has coached the women’s program at Princeton. Robert Zieminski ‘64 John Strode ‘66 Steve Matteini ‘71 At Molloy, Bob set a national flat floor record for the indoor mile (4:18.0), anchored national record 2MR teams (Indoor & Outdoor), and ran the ¾ on the 1963 champion Penn Relays DMR team. At Georgetown, he set a world record for the indoor ¾ mile (3:01.1), was outdoor IC4A 880Y record holder, three-time NCAA AllAmerican, and 1968 U.S. Olympic Trials Semifinalist. Bob works at Cardinal Mooney High School in Sarasota, Florida. John ran 48.8 for 440 yards setting the Molloy record as a junior. He bettered that running a standing Molloy record of 48.5 in 1966. As a freshman he tied the Stanner record for 220 yards 22.5 set by Burns in 1942. He improved his record with 21.9 clocking. John ran 49.9 440 leg at the Garden leading his team to a National Record in the Millrose Medley Relay. He was the 1966 Outdoor CHSAA 440 Champion and holds the Molloy Indoor 440 Record. Steve Matteini’s Molloy record of 1:14.1 for 600 yards ranked him 18th in the Nation and 5th in New York State. He led off the Molloy’s 1971 Millrose championship team running the 660 yard opening leg. He also anchored the #18 USA 3:32.2 SMR during 1971 outdoor season. He split 49.8 indoors in HS and his 1:12.0 600 yard run was nationally ranked at Georgetown. Steve Francks ‘73 John Schilling ’74 Mark Ogden ‘74 Steve set New York State Class Records in the javelin throw in each of his four years at Molloy. He won the CHSAA Champs with a NY State Record throw of 218’8 which ranked 12th in the nation. Steve continued his education at Princeton where he threw 241’11 as a freshmen. Steve transferred to UCLA after an elbow injury ended his career. Steve is a lawyer and resides in Seattle, Washington. John Schilling only joined the AMHS Track & Field team as a sophomore, but the 6’7” Schilling made his mark setting the CHSAA high jump record of 6’9.25 (#37 USA) at the AAPS Championships. John won the outdoor CHSAA Champs as a junior and the indoor CHSAA Champs as a senior. His indoor best of 6’7 ranked 16th in the nation. He moved onto William & Mary where he jumped 7’ in 1978. Mark first broke 13 minutes at Van Courtland at the NYU meet during his junior year. He broke 13 min 11 times. He won the Manhattan College Meet with an AMHS Record of 12:29. On the track he ran a 9:06.6 (2M #36 USA), 4:19.1 (M) and 14:44 (3M). He ran a 4:18 leg on our NYS Record 4 Mile relay and legs on a 7:48.2 (2MR) and a 10:16.4 (DMR). Mark continued his career at Georgetown where he ran a 2:24 marathon Richie Rodgers ’65 1974-1998 Br Robert Andrews 1975 - Richie Stuart ‘75 Richie’s held the frosh shot record of 56’1 for 34 years. His 53’.5 shot toss at Indoor Soph City Champs is still the CHSAA Class record. He threw the 16 lb shot 52’.75 for SJU in 1969. He coached a generation of great Stanner Fieldmen including: Stuart 61’11, Iannuzo 160’ disc, Westman 14’6, Voda 59’ , Boomer 22’1.25 LJ, Valenza 45’8, Croiger 14’, Limberg 58’9 160’ Br Bob has directed the Molloy T& F program to 15 CHSAA Intersectional Team titles and a NY State XC Championship. He has coached 3 individual CHSAA XC Champions (Hemery 12:38, Vespe 12:55 & McGrath 12:52?) Over nearly two generations he has coached countless Stanner sprinters, hurdlers and distancemen. Richie was 2nd Stanner to surpass 60’. His Indoor best 61’11 was the 5th best throw in the nation. He was twice CHSAA Indoor shot Champion setting the meet record of 61’3.5 in 1975. His outdoor best of 60’7 ranked him 46th in the nation. He moved onto William & Mary where he threw the 16 lb shot 56’1 indoors. Frank Averill ‘76 Don Cotter ‘76 Dennis Averill ‘76 Frank’s won the 1975 CHSAA Indoor 1000 Yard Run in 2:14.9. This was the 7th fastest time in the nation that year. His best are 1:55..9 (880 Y), 4:19.2 (M), and 3:59.1 (1500) . He ran the fastest split (4:18.1) at the New Jersey Relays. Their 17:22.8 was the 3rd fastest time in the nation that year. Don ran Molloy’s 4th fastest XC time at Van Courtland with a best of 12:46.0 helping Molloy win the 1st leg of a CHSAA Triple Crown. His bests are a 9:24.8 (2M), 4:22.3 (M) and 3:59.0 SR (1500). Don ran a 4:18.2 leg on the school record 17:22.8 4 Mile Relay Record. This performance was #6 All Time USA when run. Dennis ran a 4:22.0 leg on Molloy’s record 4 Mile Relay 17:22.8 & ran a 1:54.8 leg on the 10:09.4 (#7 USA ) Penn Distance Medley Relay team. He ran 1:55.7 finishing 2nd at the 1976 Outdoor CHSAA Championships. Member of our Indoor 7:53.6 32MR which was the 4th fastest time in the nation that season. Set SR DMR @ University of Richmond. Wendell Bonhome ‘85 Phil Hemery ‘89 Chris Lopez ‘91 Wendell opened the door to a generation of Molloy Triple Jumpers. He was the first Stanner over 46’ at the Outdoor BQ’s his junior year. He set the still standing meet record at the indoor Catholics at 46’9.5”(#20 USA). He matched that distance winning his 6th CHSAA title outdoors his senior year. He jumped over 50’ at Northeastern and was the New England Champion. Phil ran 12:38.2 winning the Catholics at Van Courtlandt. He was undefeated in CHSAA competition and was the NY State indoor champ in the 1000M (2:31.5 #8 USA) – set the Molloy Mile records indoor 4:16.49(#6 USA) and outdoor 4:13.0 (at Golden West). He continued his career at the University of North Carolina where he ran a 3:43.19 1500 M & 1:48.3 800M. Chris’ 50’7.25 triple jump at the 91 Indoor NYS Championships set both the New York State & National Catholic Records. The jump led the nation. He won the Penn Relays on his final jump with a 50’4” leap(#9 USA). He was 6 time CHSAA Champion. He won All America honors at the University of Houston with a best of 53’4.75. Tony Pough ‘91 Billy Vespe ‘92 Kawan Lovelace ‘94 Tony jumped 6’8, 6’9 and 6’10 at the 1991 Indoor NYS Championships setting Molloy and CHSAA Records. The leap was the #6 ranked performance in the nation. He was 4 time CHSAA Champion and earned All ACC honors indoors in 1995. Tony helped the University of North Carolina to 4 ACC Championships. His UNC best was 7’. Billy led the nation in both the 5000M (14:45.9) & the steeplechase (9:19.91) #26 All time USA when set. He won 4 CHSAA Titles including XC in 12:55. He was the NY State Champion Indoors in 3200 and outdoors in both the 3200 9:13.3 and the steeple 9:24.04. He ran a 3200 best of 9:11.35 at the Golden West Meet. Billy followed Chris Lopez to University of Houston. Kawan won CHSAA Championships in the Triple & Long Jumps and the hurdles. His HS best were 47’10 #15 USA & 22’6.25. At St John’s he won the 1995 National Junior Champs at 51’7. He was a 1996 Olympics competing in the Triple Jump for Belize. Was a scorer on Texas’s Big 12 Championship teams in 1998-99 with a best of 52’4. Joe Dombrowski HC’74 1983- Karen & Frank ’74 Gambino Joe’s 6’7 high jump indoors in 1974 was the 16th best jump in the nation. He was Outdoor CHSAA Champion. He then tied the Fordham University record in that event. Since 1983 he coached 42 CHSAA Varsity City Champions in the jumps including 22 Triple Jump Titles. His jumpers have also won 2 NY State Championships, a Penn Relays Title and competed in the Olympic Games (96).
