Spellings (for December 4th) - to consolidate the spelling of words which use the suffix ‘ous’
The letters ous are a suffix, meaning ‘full of’.
Rules – if the root word ends in e, usually drop the e before adding ous e.g. famous (if the root word ends in ge, you keep the e
e.g advantage). If the root word ends in y, change the y to an i before adding ous e.g. famous. In some words the y changes to
an e e.g. beauteous (but these occurrences are quite rare these days). Words ending already in our – the our ending changes to
or e.g. glamour = glamorous.
