Introduction
Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C), members of the North Coast Tech Prep Consortium (NCTPC) and all member
school districts that are active participants in the ACT COMPASS Prep Math program, have entered into an
agreement (see the ACT/COMPASS Prep Math Articulation Agreement) to offer articulated credit to qualified
students who successfully complete high school math activities that are aligned with Tri-C Math 1200. The goal of
the ACT/COMPASS Math Program is to prepare high school students for entry into postsecondary education
without the need for remediation in Mathematics.
Criteria for Granting College Credit for College Math 1200

Students must take the COMPASS Placement Test, ACT Math Test, or PLATO Pre-Assessments for TriC Math 1200 prior to using the ACT/COMPASS Prep math courseware.
Students scoring at or below the Math 1200 level may use the ACT/COMPASS Prep math courseware
under the supervision of a high school faculty member(s). Students scoring above the Math 1200
level* are eligible to take the Tri-C Math 1200 final. Students scoring at or below the Math 1200 level
and whose teachers participate in the ACT/COMPASS Prep Math Program are eligible to use the
ACT/COMPASS Prep math courseware.
Students scoring at or below the Math 1200 level must re-take the COMPASS Placement Test or ACT
Math Test after using the ACT/COMPASS Prep math courseware. Students scoring above the Tri-C
Math 1200 level* upon re-taking the COMPASS Placement test or the ACT Math Test** will be
eligible to take the Tri-C 2011 – 2012 Math 1200 final.
Students must pass the 2011-2012 Tri-C final for Math 1200 with a “B” (80%) or better grade.
Lists of eligible students are established at the high schools and Tri-C.
Participants will use Plato® ACT/Compass Prep math courseware as the primary delivery mechanism.
Teachers must submit the following documentation to the Tri-C math faculty representative: a copy
of each student’s Tri-C Math 1200 final exam, a signed articulation agreement, and a printout of the
PLATO Pre-Assessment score or the COMPASS Math Placement test score or the ACT Math Test
score. A completed green Tri-C application for each student must be submitted to the Tech Prep
Office at least 2 weeks before scheduled testing session.
* A score of 66 or higher in the COMPASS Algebra test placement domain, OR any score in the
College Algebra test placement domain, OR any score in the Trigonometry test placement domain.
** A score of 23 or higher on the ACT Math Test.
Students who have met the criteria above and have maintained a 2.0 or better overall GPA in grades 9 through 12
will receive College credit for the following course upon the receipt of a final transcript of grades from the
students’ high school.

ACT/COMPASS PREP TEACHERS’ CHECKLIST
2011-2012 School Year

Completed and signed green Tri-C applications* submitted at least 2 weeks
before scheduled testing session.
Students who have completed a Tri-C application in their Tech Prep class do
not need to complete another application PLEASE print the letters “CP” at
the top of each application next to the word ADMISSION

Completed and signed articulation agreements submitted as soon as
possible, but no later than 6/01/12

Graded Math1200 final exams submitted as soon as possible, but no later
than 6/01/12

Your Math 1200 scoring rubric submitted as soon as possible, but no later

*The Tech Prep Office will provide the blank Tri-C applications and will collect the
completed and signed applications at least two weeks before scheduled testing
session.

ACT/Compass Prep Administrator’s Checklist
2011 – 2012 School Year
Students scoring below the college ready math level but above Pre-Algebra or Math 0950 on
the Compass Math Placement test or PLATO Pre-Assessments for Tri-C Math or the ACT Math
Test may use the ACT/Compass Prep courseware to master appropriate competencies before
taking or re-taking the Compass Math Placement Test.
Send faculty for ACT/Compass Prep Training. See the Tech Prep calendar for the training
date.
Make sure your school site is Compass ready – call David Haiduc, the Tri-C Testing and
Assessment Coordinator, at 216.987.2515.
-ORSchedule a visit to a Tri-C campus for Compass Testing by calling:

Administer the Compass Placement Test or the PLATO Pre-Assessments for Tri-C math
or the ACT Math Test.
Schedule time slots for access to ACT/Compass Prep by contacting the Tech Prep Office
at 216.987.4987
Identify students scoring below the college ready math level on the Compass Placement
Test or the PLATO Pre-Assessments for Tri-C Math or the ACT Math Test.
Schedule the identified students to use ACT/Compass Prep and administer the Compass
test or ACT Math Test or re-test the students when ready but before April 23, 2012.
Submit completed green Tri-C applications for each student to the Tech Prep Office at
least 2 weeks before scheduled testing session.
Submit completed ACT/Compass Prep articulation agreements, student Math 1200
exams, and printouts of the PLATO Pre-Assessment scores or the COMPASS Math

Algebra test placement domain
0-35
Enroll in Math 0950 Beginning Algebra I.
36-50
You are eligible to enroll in the Math 0950, or Math 0980 Intensified
Beginning Algebra. See your counselor or the mathematics coordinator.
Course selection will depend on the requirements of your program/major.
51-65
You are eligible to enroll in Math 1200 Intermediate Algebra, Math 1141
Applied Algebra, Math 1250 Contemporary Mathematics, or Math 1160
Technical Mathematics I. See your counselor or the mathematics
coordinator. Course selection will depend on the requirements of your
program/major.
66-100
You are eligible to enroll in Math 1470 Modern Mathematics for Business/
Social Sciences I, Math 1410 Elementary Probability and Statistics I, or Math
1370 Mathematics for Elementary and Middle School Teachers I. See your
counselor or the mathematics coordinator. Course selection will depend
on the requirements of your program/major.
North Coast Tech Prep students who test into the Pre-Algebra test
placement domain or into the 0-35 score range in the Algebra test
placement domain are NOT eligible to use Compass Prep.
North Coast Tech Prep students who test at 66 or higher in the
Algebra test placement domain or 23 or higher on the ACT Math Test
may take the Tri-C Math 1200 final exam for college credit.

ACT/COMPASS PREP FAQ’s
Q:
If a high school Tech Prep student passes the Tri-C Math 1200 final exam, will s/he have to
take the Tri-C math placement test (COMPASS Math Placement Test) again when enrolling at
Tri-C after high school graduation?
A:
No. Students who earn Tri-C Math 1200 credit are automatically exempt from taking the Tri-C
Math Placement test for one year after high school graduation.
Q:
If a high school Tech Prep student scores below 80% on the Tri-C Math 1200 final exam, can
the student re-take the final exam?
A:
No.

When taking the COMPASS Math Placement Test, ACT Math Test, or the PLATO PreAssessments for Tri-C Math 1200, can a student use a hand held calculator?
A:
No. Tri-C policy prohibits the use of hand held calculators in testing environments. Students
will be instructed to use their computer’s calculator located in the Start Menu when taking the
COMPASS Math Placement Test, ACT Math Test, or PLATO Pre-assessments. Math teachers
may choose to have their students use those calculators throughout the year.
