The White House Internship Program was designed to provide future public servants with an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. In accordance with this mission, interns are offered regular opportunities for personal and professional development through community service projects and Q&A sessions with senior staff members. Interns can also select to be matched with a staff member mentor to assist with career planning. Julia interned in the White house Department of Scheduling and Advance, which coordinates the travel itineraries for President Obama and the White House Press Corps. As an intern, Julia worked within all components of the department and contributed to the coordination of Presidential travel, the execution of events, and the review and consideration of scheduling invitations addressed to President Obama. Julia had the opportunity to serve as an Advance team member for the President, Vice President, and Dr. Jill Biden’s visit to Knoxville in January of this year. She also had the privilege of assisting the team that coordinated President Obama’s visit to the G20 Summit in Brisbane, Australia in November. Julia enjoyed the community atmosphere of the Department of Scheduling and Advance very much and is very grateful she had the opportunity to meet so many bright young people committed to public service. Julia is pictured with her sister, Margaret Ross (UT Economics Class of 2013) in the White House Crosshalls during holiday festivities. Students interested in applying for the White House Internship Program should get in touch with the Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships and plan to attend the Baker Center Café on DC Internships on February 17th from 12:45-1:45pm.
