Second Round Table Conference on the Sustainable Consumption in Bulgaria was
organized by the Economics of Natural Resources Department under the patronage of the
Rector of UNWE Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.)thStatty Statev. The Forum was held within the framework
of the project from December, 12 , 2009 titled Sustainable Consumption in Bulgaria –
Change of Models and financed by the Scientific Researches Fund to the Ministry of
Education and Science. In the work of the project have participated the Vice Rectors of
UNWE: Prof. Dr. Valentin Goev, Prof. Dr. Veselka Pavlova, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Marcho Markov
as well as representatives of other universities, institutions, the business and nongovernmental organizations.
On behalf of the Rector and Academic Managing Body of the university Prof. Dr. Valentin
Goev greeted the participants in the Round Table Conference. He expressed his confidence
in the importance of the project implemented by the UNWE, University of Plovdiv and the
Bulgarian National Association - Active Consumers. Prof. Goev gave an account of the
problems associated with the elaborations over the last year emphasizing on the fact that
scientifically there were no grounds for the project to be interrupted. I have no doubt of the
successful completion and significant result of the project, outlined the Vice Rector.

Prof. D.Sc. (Econ.) Plamen Mishev, Head of the Economics of Natural Resources
Department and Chairman of the Scientific Researches Fund commented the financing of
Bulgarian science and pointed out that despite difficult conditions the researchers at the
UNWE were working actively and it was important for the occupation of a worthy place in the
scientific academic community of the country. He emphasizes on the need to be rearranged
priorities at national level and outlined the importance of the Forum.
Dr. Bogomil Nikolov, Executive Director of the Bulgarian National Association - Active
Consumers turned the attention of attendants at the Large Conference Hall on the various
aspects of sustainability and the urgency to be drawn conclusions and recommendations in
that area.
The project Sustainable Consumption in Bulgaria - Change of Models was presented by its
manager Assoc. Prof. Dr. Daniela Ivanova. In her presentation she examined the main
objectives and goals of the research, descripted the challenges to the sustainable
consumption at world, European and national level, considered the results of the so-called
work packages, the identification and analysis of sustainable patterns of production and
consumption in Bulgaria, the appropriate and available information, the quality of products
and services, methods of analysis, management, security and quality control, etc.

The sustainable consumption patterns of individual users and households in Bulgaria were
examined by Dr. Elka Vasileva from the Economics of Natural Resources Department. Best
practices for sustainable consumption and the subsequent discussions specified the various
practical aspects of the topic.
The project Sustainable Consumption in Bulgaria – Change of Models will be completed till
the end of 2013. Last year was issued also the new book by the team of UNWE - Sustainable
Consumption of Bulgaria which was the first edition of its kind in the country.
