DrEdwardJenner(1749-1823)rightlycelebratedastheFatheroflmmunology,becauseofhispioneer-
ingstudiesintothepreventionofsmallpoxusingvaccinationwithacowpoxvaccine.However,this
monumentalsuccesshasovershadowedmanyotherachievements,notonlyinmedicinebutalsoinbotany,
Asanexpertsurgeon,physicianandanatomistwhohadstudiedunderthegreatJohnHunter,Jenner
wasalwavskeentounderstandtheanatomicalbasisforsymptoms.Tothisendhedissectedthecorpses
ofpatientswhohaddiedfromdiseaseswhichpuzzledhim.
Suchconditionsincludedchestpain．Thisledtohimprovidingsolneofthefirstdescriptionsofthe
associationbetweenAnginaPectorisandcoronaryarteryocclusion.Asaclassicexample,inl772he
describedadissectionofthecoronaryarteriesinwhichhisscalpelstruckhard,grittymaterial.Afterfirst
blamingthisollplasterwhichmighthavefallenfromtheceiling,hethencorrectlyassociateditwith
pathologicalchangeswhichheproposedasthecauseofthepatient'sangina.
Jennerrelatedhisfindingstocolleagueswhometwithhimregularlytodiscussmedicalmatters.
