Okay, so it's not the NCAA
Division III playoffs, but the
Pittsburgh State men's soccer
team is making the most of its
situation.
With a 3-1 victory over
Clarkson Saturday in an East
Coast Athletic Conference
semifinal game at the Fieldhouse, Piausburgh moved closer
to winning its first postseason
title in men's soccer.
The No. 1-seeded Cards, 16-22 overall, are scheduled to face
Alfred University, the No. 2 seed
in the ECACs, at the Fieldhouse
Sunday at noon for the ECAC
championship.
Against Clarkson, Piausburgh
faced a team they had defeated 21 on Oct 12. As in the first
game, the Cardinals got off to a
slow start against the Golden
Knights. As a result, the Cardinals found themselves down 1-0
in the early going, just as in the
first game. However, goals by
Jamie Loomis and Gordon McNeil turned the tables on Clarkson before halftime. and Loomis
added an insurance goal midway
through the second half .
The Golden Knights' Toby
Dunmore one-touched Randy
Gellert's direct kick into the
Piausburgh goal 7:27 into the
game to put Clarkson ahead.
"They scored so early, the first
thing I said to {Cards' goalie
Chris) Balducci was that we have
plenty of time to get back into
the game," senior co-captain
Brian Micheels said. "Nobody
panicked: that was the key."

"They were mentallyreadyin
the locker room, but they didn't
take that intensity out onto the
field," said Waterbury.
"We expected to be flat," said
McNeil, "you can't come off a
nine-day layoff and not be a little
flat."

"We win because we have 20
good players, and not 11
starters," said Waterbury. "I put

you have three guys in their going 100 percent, and you put

With the Cardinals clinging to
a 2-1 lead in the second half,
Balducci kept them in the game
with his alert play in goal. He
finished the game with six
saves, and on several occasions

Loomis capitalized on a
defensive error in front of the
Knights' goal for the Cardinals'
final score with 22:38 left in the
game. Todd Stoller looped a
cross from the right side that
landed directly in front of the
goal, a SO-SO ball that both
Clarkson's Hansen and Plattsburgh's Kevin Husselbeck went
for. Husselbeck collided with the
goalie and the ball popped out, a
play Clarkson coach Willi
Steinrotter called "questionable."
Loomis drilled the loose ball
into the goal between a pair of
Clarkson defenders.
During the game, the Cardinals substituted liberally, rotating two players at nearly every
position. Clarkson made only
two substitutions in the entire
game, and that took its toll on
the Golden Knights. Pittsburgh
outshot Clarkson 10*8, but most
of the Knights1 offense took
place in the first three-quarters of
the game and stalled after that.
Waterbury praised his defense
for shutting down Clarkson's
key offensive players, strikers
Dunmore and Larry Martin and
midfielder Michael Kirmse.
"Those three are as dangerous
as any three you'll see," said
Waterbury. "Brian Tracey, who
didn't practice all week (Tracey
injured his leg in the regularseason finale at Albany), came
out and had a great game. Kenny
Hay, our other marking back,
shut down Martin (Clarkson's
top scorer), and we alternated
Bourgeois, (Tom) Cordy and
Husselbeck on Kirmse. Brian
Micheels covered for their mistakes."
"The coach said it was a team
effort that brought us through,"
said Cordy. "I think the crowd
had a lot to do with it, too. I
have never heard a crowd go so
crazy after our first goal. We
hope they're here next week."
