Part I: Essay (approximately three hours):
Please answer one of the two following questions:
1. Write an essay about Munch’s representation of masculinity before and after 1900. Include an
analysis of the following works as part of your discussion: Vampire (1893), Self-Portrait with
Cigarette (1895) and Bathing Men (1907). You can also mention other works, like his paintings of
workers.
2. Discuss Munch’s early career and his stylistic and thematic developments and shifts from
Morning (1883), via The Sick Girl (1885-6) till The Scream (1893). Analyze these three works as
part of your discussion. (You can also include other works in the discussion). What and who
influenced Munch in these years?
