We all hear ‘Where did the year go’ or ‘Time is going faster and faster’ or ‘I cannot
believe it is already (put in the date)’. I heard them from businesses through out the
year and reflecting on these comment’s, they were always followed with a positive
conversation and continued optimism.
On behalf of our businesses and communities, the Chamber will be hitting 2016 with
great optimism. We have solid annual events to promote through our website, tourism
exhibits outside of our county, Central Oregon Visitor Association media and now, our up and running
River Canyon Country tourism program representing Crook and Jefferson County. This is along with
the multitude of conversations with visitors at the Chamber and requested mailings for information on
relocation and tourist information.
Personally my optimism comes from you. The business owner, the long term employee, the community
activist and our new comers to the area. The Chamber has many hats to function under and is pulled in
a multitude of directions. Without your thoughts, input and discussions I could not be effective nor
energetic in meeting your Chambers objective. They are always welcomed and are highly valuable.
You will be reading this about six days into the new year and not quite ready to ‘wonder where did the
year go’. You maybe wondering where to take the year to. Grab onto 2016 with vigor, vitality and
optimism while appreciating where you live and work while enjoying the positive attributes of your
community.
HAPPY NEW YEAR from your Chamber staff, Helen and Joe.

Museum Description and History
The dream of a tribal museum for the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs
Reservation of Oregon began over four decades ago. In 1968, the tribal leadership and
community recognized that private collectors or off reservation institutions were buying
much of their material culture. Soon thereafter, the Tribes began to allocated $50,000 every
year for the purchase of artifacts from individual tribal members and families of the Warm
Springs community.
The collection that was made includes family heirlooms, trade items from other tribes,
bestowed gifts and keepsakes that have been passed on from generation to generation
making the collection one of the best and most complete material collections owned by an
Indian tribe. In addition to artifacts, The Museum's collection boasts 5,000 photographs dating from the 1850's to the present. The
third component of the collection consists of important tribal documents and many books on a wide range of subjects on American
Indian history, art and culture.
The support of the Warm Springs community and the commitment behind The Museum are the hallmarks of the project. The
Tribes began focused planning for The Museum in 1987 with the hiring of its first executive director. In October 1988, tribal
members voted to appropriate $2.5 million for Museum construction. The Tribes then added over $726,498 making their total
contribution $3,226,493. In the fall of 1988, the Tribes raised an additional $3.1 million from foundations, corporations and
individuals for the construction, education program and museum endowment. The total project cost $7,728,900. The Museum was
the first tribal museum in the state of Oregon.
Stastny & Burke Architecture of Portland, Oregon designed the building and permanent exhibit was designed by Formations, Inc.,
also of Portland. Construction began May 7, 1992 by S.M. Andersen Construction, Inc. of Portland. The grand opening celebration
was March 14, 1993.
The Museum At Warm Springs is intended to preserve the history and traditions of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm springs
Reservation of Oregon. The Museum is both a gesture of welcome to the general public and a conservatory for ancient and
revered traditions. Located on Highway 26, The Museum is arranged to resemble a traditional encampment among the
cottonwoods along Shitike Creek in the Deschutes River Canyon. It is intended to be a place in harmony with the natural
environment and the natural materials used in the building's construction reflect the surroundings and traditions of the Tribes.
Native stone, heavy timber and brick are all finely detailed to demonstrate the integration of art into everyday life. Meaningful
symbols that are used by the Tribes, such as the drum, dance costume bustles and patterns from Klickitat baskets are integrated
into the architecture.
The Museum has an exceptional Gift Shop which carries one-of-a-kind, collectible art work made by Warm Springs artists. A fine
assortment of Pendleton merchandise, books, CDs and delicious huckleberry products are available.
The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00am to 5:00pm.and closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.
