Report on Training Week 2 «Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System» SANITAS SUSTAINABLE AND INTEGRATED URBAN WATER SYSTEM MANAGEMENT Marie Curie Network for Initial Training Seventh Framework Programme Grant Agreement Nr. 289193 Deliverable reference: D.4.6 Training Weeks Reports SANITAS Training Week 2 -‐ Lund Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System 22nd -‐ 26th October, 2012 Coordinator name: Dr. Joaquim Comas i Matas Coordinator institution name: UNIVERSITAT DE GIRONA Date of delivery: 30/10/2012 Report on Training Week 2 «Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System» 1. INTRODUCTION The aim of this report is to provide a brief overview of the first Training Week organized in the framework of the project SANITAS -‐ Sustainable and Integrated Urban Water System Management -‐ financed under the 7th Framework Programme -‐ Marie Curie Actions. SANITAS is a Europe-‐wide training platform that aims to provide the best technical and managerial skills to young researchers that will become the next generation of Urban Water System management professionals. The complex and utterly diverse nature of the urban water system management represents a challenge to the management professionals and calls for a decisive change in the training paradigm. The thematic approach of the SANITAS 4 Training Weeks responds to this call and establishes training from a multidisciplinary perspective (see Scheme 1 for an overview). Each Training Week presents a good balance of theoretical and practical information: workshops, hands-‐on training, tutorials, site visits. Scheme 1. TRAINING WEEK 2 – OVERVIEW 2.1. Objectives The second Training Week titled “Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System” had the objective to train fellows in the skills of dynamic modelling of the biochemical processes occurring in sewers, WWTPs and river systems, putting special emphasis on standardized models, and the basic control concepts of such systems. World-‐wide experts in the field of water/wastewater modelling were invited to share experiences in the field of modelling, control, instrumentation and automation of Urban Wastewater Systems. Theoretical teaching was complemented by practical sessions using specialized software (MatLab/Simulink) and site visits (Lynnetten wastewater treatment plant, Copenhagen, Denmark). 2.2. Organization and results The Training Week was organized by Lund University (LU) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and took place in the campus of Lund University (Sweden). The programme was divided into several sections including: 1) intensive course training; 2) hands-‐on exercises, 3) presentations by the SANITAS partners and the independent panel of experts (IPE), 4) presentations from the fellows; 5) site-‐visits (see Annex 1, Programme). The first two days were devoted to course training. Basic concepts about dynamic systems, conservation laws, mass balances, wastewater treatment modelling, control and benchmarking were given by Dr Ulf Jeppsson (LU), Dr Krist Gernaey (DTU) and Dr Xavier Flores-‐Alsina (LU). The second part of the course, by Dr Flores-‐Alsina and Dr Jeppsson was focused on practical use of mathematical models and application of control. The students could use/train/play around with the MatLab/Simulink implementation of the Benchmark Simulation Model No 1 (BSM1) trying to improve effluent quality and at the same reducing operational cost of a virtual plant widely used in wastewater engineering. 2 Report on Training Week 2 «Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System» Invited SANITAS partners and IPE members shared experiences with the fellows giving lectures in the field of: plant wide modelling (Dr Peter Vanrolleghem, Laval University, Canada), the water-‐energy nexus (Dr Gustaf Olsson, Lund University, Sweden), sewer quality modelling (Dr Zighuo Yuan, University of Queensland, Australia) and integrated sewer -‐ wwtp -‐ receiving media modelling/control (Dr Lorenzo Benedetti, Waterways, Italy). Besides technically related lectures, additional teaching was provided to the SANITAS fellows within the field of scientific communication by Dr Gemma Revuelta, Pompeu Fabra University, Spain. The last part of day three of the Training Week was devoted to site visits. The fellows visited the Lynnetten wastewater treatment plant (Copenhagen, Denmark). Dr Dines Thornberg from Copenhagen Wastewater Innovation gave a presentation about research projects dealing with urban drainage, flow forecasting and control. Furthermore, he gave a tour to the different plant facilities and explained to the fellows the different units of which Lynnetten is comprised, putting special emphasis on the instrumentation (sensors) and control aspects. Thus, the theoretical classes were complemented with some real life engineering application in the field. During the fourth training day, fellows made presentations. Each fellow presented his/her research project in a 15 (presentation) + 5 (discussion, questions) minutes time slot. The different SANITAS partners and other senior researchers gave comments. Finally the training week was finished with a general presentation given by the SANITAS coordinator Dr Joaquim Comas regarding the project’s research focus, selected topics and state-‐of-‐the-‐art. 2.3. Documentation All training week literature, Power Point course presentations and the presentations of the fellows are available on the intranet of the project (www.sanitas-‐itn.eu/intranet). 2.4. Deviations The initial program of this Training week (Annex 1) scheduled all the presentations given by the ESR/ER to be completed on Thursday. However, due to the length of both presentations and discussions amongst the young and the senior researchers, they had to be extended until 3 Report on Training Week 2 «Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System» Friday. The general SANITAS discussion started at 10:30 and it was extended until 12. The management meeting started one hour late and lasted until 3 pm. It is worth noting that the initial feed back from the fellows (both ESR and ER) after the Training Week were very positive and fully supported the thematic approach of the programme, while highlighting the importance of the complementary skills acquired in Lund by Lund University and DTU to their research careers. A formal evaluation of the entire training week is on-‐going. 3. DISSEMINATION The training week was open to participants outside the SANITAS consortium; therefore its programme was publicized via the SANITAS webpage (http://www.sanitas-‐itn.eu/forthcoming-‐ sanitas-‐2nd-‐training-‐week-‐22-‐26-‐october-‐lund-‐copenhagen/), via Facebook and via email by all the consortium partners to interested PhD students and researchers. 4. PARTICIPANTS The Training Week was attended by the SANITAS fellows and consortium delegates (see Annex 2, List of participants) as well as by PhD students from both Lund and Girona University. For the next Training Week, partners will increase their efforts to allow the participation of researchers outside the consortium and not only from the host institution. 4 Report on Training Week 2 «Modelling and Control of the Urban Wastewater System» Annex 1.
