Ordering Whole Numbers Lesson plan = 60 min activity This has been developed for use on Sumdog (www.sumdog.com), a new website offering high-quality, free mathematics games for students aged 9-13. Classroom resources Objective • Have students practice ordering numbers up to 20, 100, and 1000 Structure • • 60 min lesson Online activity followed by offline classroom activity Resources • • Access to the Sumdog website Student handout from our website (http://www.sumdog.com/en/Ordering_Whole_Numbers/attachments/OrderingNumb ers_Handout.doc) Plan • • Preparation (optional): ◦ Sign up for an account on Sumdog and create accounts for your students. Activity (60 min): ◦ Quickly review whole numbers (5 min) ◦ Play Sumdog games (25 min) ▪ Pass out the student handouts. These will explain how to use the website. ▪ Have the students start playing any game, starting at the “easy” topic listed on the handout (“Ordering numbers up to 20”). ▪ Every 10 minutes, stop the students for a brief discussion and have them try the next harder topic. ▪ For advanced students, encourage them to try the “challenge” topic on the worksheet (“Ordering positive and negative numbers”). ◦ Classroom activity (30 min) ▪ Divide the students into teams and have them stand on different sides of the room. ▪ Each student should write down a number on a piece of paper in large print (filling the sheet). For now, they keep it to themselves. ▪ On “Go”, students show each other their numbers and the teams race to order themselves correctly. ▪ You can repeat this, increasing the difficulty (e.g. numbers over 50).
