DDSB prides itself on being inclusive of all. Throughout the year we will be highlighting various events, celebrations and observances of the diverse backgrounds our schools and communities serve. International Women's Day (March 8) The theme of the 2015 event is “Make it Happen.” This date represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality. International Women's Day is celebrated around the world. This special day is an excellent opportunity to recognize the contributions to social justice and international peace and security that have been made by women. March 8th also provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women's equality, to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society, to plan steps to enhance the status of women, and to celebrate the gains made in these areas. In 1908, The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in GB adopted the colour of purple, white and green to symbolize justice and dignity, values closely associated with equality of women. On March 8, 2015 Eagle Ridge Public School will wear purple in support of this important day. Make it happen! The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (March 21) The United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed each year on March 21 in different capacities. The intent of the day is to remind people of the negative consequences of racial discrimination. It encourages us all to remember our obligation and need to combat all forms of racial discrimination. We will highlight the intent of this day always at our school and specifically this month by Wearing Red – To Red Card Racism This day was established after an event in Sharpeville, South Africa resulted in the killing of 69 people after a peaceful demonstration. The UN General Assembly called on the international community to increase and continue efforts to eliminate any and all forms of racial discrimination. As DDSB we continue to work towards the elimination of all forms of racial intolerance in both our schools and communities through work on social justice, curricular connections and community partnerships.
