For more information, contact Craig Lucas [email protected] Family Promise Celebrates 5-Years of Success! On Sunday, October 16, Pastor George, Craig and Diane Lucas, Elaine Iverson, Lynne Rivera, and David and Joann Steinmeier gathered at the First Baptist Church of Alhambra to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Family Promise of San Gabriel Valley (FPSGV). We were joined by all of the other Host Congregations. Through the kindness and generosity of Church of the Good Shepherd and affiliated congregations, 106 adults and 133 children have been served since FPSGV opened its doors in 2011. The impact of everyone pulling together has been tremendous: 243,685+ meals, 97,474 bed nights, and countless words of encouragement providing healing comfort and hope. “As we cut the birthday cake and recognize the contributions of so many, our hearts and minds will be with our graduate families”, says, co-founder and Board Chair Karen Roberson”. “By activating community resources, we’re able to make sure children have care or remain in school while we help their parents find employment and /or housing”, according to Matthew Rayburn, FPSGV Executive Director. “The people coming to us have skills and ambition and by intervening before they descend into a downward spiral of chronic homelessness, we’re able to be a one-way solution to the rising challenges of homeless in our society”. Diane Lucas accepted a certificate of recognition and FPSGV banner honoring Good Shepherd for our support. Please look for the banner at different locations within Good Shepherd over the next several weeks. October 16-23 is National Family Promise Week for the 202 Affiliates across the country. Volunteering to bring a meal, planning an evening activity for children, being part of the set-up crew, or donating dollars if not time, are all ways you can serve those in need among us. Remember …. “We Are Family Promise”! 2017 Family Promise Schedule: Winter Hosting – January 22-29 Spring Hosting – April 23-30 Summer Hosting – June 25 – July 2 Fall Hosting – September 24 – October 1 -David Steinmeier, Family Promise Communications Coordinator, [email protected] An Additional List for Veteran’s Day and Active Military In addition to honoring all veterans and all of our country’s active military with the special flowers we do on Memorial Day, Veterans’ Day and at memorial services, Church of the Good Shepherd would like to create a list of the Veterans in our congregation as well as the active military in our congregation. The new list will be printed once a year on Veterans’ Day in addition to the list of flower fund contributors which will continue to be printed on both Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day. No monetary donation is requested to be on the new CGS Veterans/Active Military list. Trunk-or-Treat Save the date! Monday, October 31, 2016, is our annual Trunk-or-Treat event! There are two different ways to get involved. First, you can bring your car to our line-up and hand out candy from your trunk (decorated any way you like) to the little ghosts and goblins or you can bring your families and children to enjoy a safe and fun evening of trick-or-treating. The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the church parking lot. If you are interested in bringing your car to hand out treats, please contact Lynne or Vern Whitaker at [email protected] or (626) 446-7860. We all receive grace at some point in our lives. Grace is unexpected, undeserved, free love we receive when we don’t anticipate it; haven’t earned it. Grace is vital to us, especially when we face trials, illnesses, events that hurt, threaten, and make us miserable. The books in the current display speak to the need for grace and the effect it has on us. Philip Yancey wrote What’s So Amazing About Grace? The story of Babette’s Feast illustrates the force of change and the nature of grace. One of the worst events we face is the death of someone we love. Read Earl A. Grollman’s Living When a Loved One Has Died. It’s poetry about the ways we react to the event, the process of grief, and the coming out on the other end – desire to live fully. For a humorous look at life’s events, read Robert Fulgham’s It was on Fire When I Lay Down on It describes grace in his story about the Mother of the Bride and her daughter’s wedding. Norman Vincent Peale’s Why Some Positive Thinkers Get Powerful Results focuses on the following short verse: Silence, Silence, Heavenly Father, Kindly Father, My Father, The Great God, the Loving God, the protecting God, Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior, is helping me now. (p.130) Diane Cole’s After Great Pain, A New Life Emerges discusses her loss of her mother, her husband’s battle with cancer, being held hostage in a takeover in Washington, D.C., and not being able to have a child. After each horror, she renewed her life. Lastly, read Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul. It contains 101 stories included to lift spirits and lighten the heart. Many of the authors are people like us who sent their stories to the authors. Grace is divine! Enjoy it and give it! -Elaine Drew, Librarian Choir Christmas Concert Rehearsals Summer just ended and we are already thinking about the upcoming holiday season! The Choir Christmas Concert will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, October 26, from 7:30-9:00 p.m. The concert will be held on Sunday, December 11, at 4:00 p.m. this year and will feature the VIVALDI GLORIA with orchestra, as well as some well-known carols. Volunteers Needed The Board of Trustees is looking for 6 to 8 volunteers to train on and help operate the new audio/visual equipment that will soon be installed in the Sanctuary. There will be training sessions set up to acquaint you with the new equipment. Please talk to Mike Hoover ([email protected]), Tony Parrille ([email protected]), or call the church office if you are interested in being trained and being of service. “Fill the Bowl Project” Fill the Bowl Project is part of The Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Protection Ministries program. Every year, thousands of churches across the county donate food to local food pantries and other programs that help fight hunger. Pets are a vital part of our community but are often overlooked in times of need. Through the Fill the Bowl Project, faith communities can help by collecting new, unopened cans and bags of pet food (dog and cat). One simple donation provides food for a pet and peace of mind for an owner. Donations will be collected from October 3 to November 7, 2016. Look for the Fill the Bowl Project bins outside the Children’s Center Office. Upcoming Events to Mark on Your Calendars: The E-Waste recycling has been rescheduled until January 21 and 22. Bring pet food for the “Fill the Bowl” Project. Bins are outside the Children’s Center office. October 20 – Men’s Ministry/UMM meeting at 6:30 p.m. (see article in newsletter).
