Fall/Winter 2016 Issue A Word From Director Tiffany Johnson As I reflect on the past year at Haven Care Center, my heart overflows with “Thanksgiving and Praise” to our Almighty God for allowing LIFE to be an option on His sixth day of creation. Each day of life is a gift and we are only here temporarily to build His kingdom. This is our strong desire at Haven Care Center and we realize time is crucial and sensitive. We are called to be His hands, feet and to share His love with others. We are formed in His image and are fearfully and wonderfully made, which is our stronghold through His name. My heart feels great joy in knowing we are woven together as a Body of Christ to be “defenders of the unborn.” More individuals are connecting and finding us through social media, especially those who are abortion minded. Prayers are being answered and I am excited to say our ultrasound room has been utilized more often this quarter. One mom chose LIFE but please continue to be prayer warriors for the other moms, who are abortion minded, even after viewing the development and hearing the heartbeat of their babies. Sadly, our work on earth isn’t done, but we exalt God for the life He gives to us for sending us His Son, A Redeeming Savior, Jesus Christ. I PRAY YOU ALL HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND WE ALL BRING MORE GLORY TO HIS NAME IN 2017 IN OUR MISSION AND VISION AT HAVEN CARE CENTER. Gabrielle Phipps described herself as “a mess” when she came into Haven Care Center’s office in Danville with her grandparents and pregnant with twins. She was a single mom who needed resources after traveling from Alabama where the father of her twins sent her after he found out she was pregnant. She, however, wanted a family and she tried to encourage his involvement despite the fact that he was emotionally and physically abusive. She realized begging him was not worth it, though, and she did not want that for her babies. The couple had been living in Florida together prior to that time and he simply washed his hands of her and sent her home to live with her adoptive parents in Alabama. Gabrielle had been abandoned by her single mother as a child still in elementary school. She just left one day and never came back, Phipps explained. She and her siblings were found Page 2 by their grandmother in their home with no electricity and nothing to eat. Their grandmother took them in. “My Grandma lost everything taking care of us because of my Mom. . . A lot of things, when I was little, shouldn’t have happened.” Those very troubled times caused Gabrielle to be angry and rebellious and by the time she was 11 years old she went into foster care, 10 of those placements being residential facilities for children like Gabrielle. But once she became pregnant, her grandparents encouraged her to return to Kentucky. And that’s when Gabrielle met HCC Director Tiffany Johnson. Gabrielle poured out her heart to Johnson, telling her about her childhood and then about her lonely situation with no friends and a father totally out of the picture. “I’m an open book,” she said. “It doesn’t bother me to talk about things.” Johnson saw that as healing for Gabrielle. “He’s mending your heart,” Gabrielle said Johnson told her. Despite her situation, Gabrielle wanted her babies. She did everything she could to make sure they remained healthy in her womb. She quit smoking and began immediately to take prenatal vitamins. “I saw a selfless person that put her children first,” Johnson said. About a year later and after her twin girls were born, she reconnected with HCC on April 29, 2016. It was a very low point in Gabrielle’s life, she explained. Although she had done everything in her power to provide for her children, including getting her own place, she had post-partum depression and financially it was very difficult. She had taken care of provisions for her girls but her apartment had no furniture and she was sleeping on the floor. She said to herself, “If I need help, I will ask; I will at least try.” She called HCC crying and again poured out her troubles to Johnson and asked if there might be anything she could do to help her. Johnson immediately intervened. She referred Gabrielle to Kentucky Works and then penned a letter to Southland Christian Church’s Dollar Club, which believes in helping $1 at a time. The program encourages its 11,000-plus congregation to give one extra dollar each week to help those in need. Southland not only bought her a car but paid the insurance and the utilities in her apartment for six months and helped furnish her apartment. “When we went and got the car, it just felt unreal,” Gabrielle said. “I didn’t want to believe it. It didn’t seem like it was really happening.” With her Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program money, $260 a month, food stamps and WIC, she still needed a job. So back she went to HCC to talk about schooling and a job. “Really it was all Tiffany,” Gabrielle said in reference to all that Haven Care Center has done for her and her children. “She got everything done for me.” Single moms have a hard road to travel. Jostling jobs with their children’s needs, daycare and home responsibilities, all on their own, can take its toll. Add all that on top of a life of hard knocks already? Gabrielle, however, is not a quitter. “I’m ready to work and provide for them,” Gabrielle said. “Initially I didn’t want government assistance but that’s what I did.” Gabrielle believes it all goes back to the day she became homeless while pregnant; when she walked out the door and away from the father of her children in Florida and said into the sky, “Jesus loves you. If you give me a chance to do something with myself; if you just give me the opportunity.” Now she looks at her life and sees just how far she has come and she’s ready to give back. “I don’t know what my plan is. I just know I want to help people. I just know that’s what I am meant to do.” “It’s so crazy to look at that and look at myself now.” What’s Been Happening: June 2 – Garrard County Agency meeting June 8 – Director’s Meeting in Elizabethtown June 15 – The Gladys Project June 16 – Lincoln County Agency meeting June 17 – Boyle County Agency meeting July 7 – Mercer County Agency meeting July 8 – Lincoln County baby shower with YSC July 9 – Boyle County baby shower with Boyle County Extension July 12 – Garrard County Agency meeting July 13 – Counseling training with Assurance July 19 – Presentation for River Foundation July 21 – Lincoln County Agency meeting July 27 – Volunteer training Aug. 11 – Hope Network meeting Aug. 12 – Director’s meeting in Somerset Aug. 17 – Choosing the Best training in Frankfort Aug. 18 – Lincoln County Agency meeting Aug. 29 – Boyle County 9th-grade boys-Choosing the Best Aug. 29 – Volunteer training Aug. 30 – Garrard County YSC- Choosing the Best Aug. 31 – Boyle County 9th-grade boys-Choosing the Best Sep. 1 – Mercer County Agency meeting Sep. 8 – I Mom group meeting Sep. 12 & 15 – Garrard County 6th, 7th, 8th graders-Choosing the Best Sep. 16 – Boyle County Agency meeting Sep. 17-18 – Camp Calvary Ladies Retreat-Indian Hills Sep. 19-20 & 26 – Garrard County 6th, 7th, 8th gradersChoosing the Best Oct. 5 – EKU Interview for HCC Oct. 14-16 – Missions Conference for Grace Presbyterian Oct. 20 – Lincoln County Agency meeting Oct. 21 – Boyle County Agency meeting Oct. 25 – 16 Annual HCC Fundraising Banquet Nov. 1 – Garrard County Agency meeting Nov. 3 – Mercer County Agency meeting Nov. 10 – Lincoln County HS meeting with YSC Nov. 17 – LCHS visit and Agency meeting Nov. 18 – Boyle County Agency meeting Nov. 21 – Reality Store booth for Garrard Middle School Page 3 Upcoming Events: 12/1 HCC Christmas Gathering 12/17 Lincoln County Peer Counseling 12/17 God's Treehouse Presentation at Immanuel Baptist Church in Harrodsburg 01/09/17 HCC presentations are scheduled for Salt River Baptist Church and the South District Baptist Association Choosing the Best, outreach abstinence centered programs through the state taught by Director Johnson in HCC’s area public schools, are scheduled as follows: 12/5-7 Boy's Danville HS-freshmen 12/12-14 Girl's Danville HS-freshmen 12/14-15 Garrard County High School-freshmen and sophomores “Choosing the Best” promotes a holistic, "risk avoidance" approach to sex education that strongly promotes delaying sex as the best and healthiest choice. Love brings Wendy to the center one day a week and Shadona, two days. They work in the boutique organizing clothing and other items for the babies and children and they prepare the bottles for the Bottles of Blessings fundraiser drives. Although Wendy said she was nervous on the first day they came to the center to work, it didn’t take any time at all for her to feel at home. “After that, I’m so excited to come. . . I feel the love in this place,” Wendy added with a huge smile on her face. Love said that even if it weren’t her job to provide community service for her clients, she would be volunteering at Haven Care Center. “I knew the first day,” Love said. “I thank God for giving me this; for the clarity. I know where I should be. . . I will be here as long as Tiffany lets us be here.” Both ladies love being able to make a difference in their community while gaining social skills and support in their communities, Johnson said. "Haven Care Center is blessed beyond measure by having such genuine, compassionate, loving young ladies to help,” Johnson said. “They both are true gems. I am so impressed by their willingness to organize and prepare our Bottles of Blessing. Wendy and Shadona are team players and a huge part of our center. Between all these outstanding volunteers, they have given hundreds of hours to be servants. Their love radiates a room. We are the blessed ones.” The Adoption Option is available two-fold for Haven Care Center’s clients. The center has partnerships with Bethany Christian Services and Love Basket, an agency with a Kentucky office based in Louisville. Call HCC, 859-236-9282 for more information.
