What is Honor Flight?
Conceived by Earl Morse, a physician assistant and retired Air Force Captain, the inaugural Honor Flight® took place in May of 2005. Six
small planes flew out of Springfield, Ohio taking only 12 World War II veterans on a visit to Washington D.C. to see their memorial. Later
that year, after word got out, the list of veterans grew and Honor Flight® transitioned from a few small planes to commercial airlines. This
was a great accomplishment which allowed them to fulfill their goal of accommodating as many veterans as possible.
Since then, Honor Flight® has flown more than 100,000 veterans to Washington, D.C. from cities all over the country.
Today, Honor Flight® is a national network of non-profit organizations (hubs) throughout the country, like Honor Flight
South Florida, whose sole mission is to honor America’s veterans for all the sacrifices they’ve made on behalf of our
country.
Honor Flight South Florida is a 100% all-volunteer organization, dedicated solely to honoring all veterans in Broward,
Dade, and Monroe counties. In the final chapters of their lives, it’s a race against time to fly these veterans to Washington
DC to visit and reflect at the memorials built in their honor. Top priority is given to our most senior defenders of
freedom, World War II veterans and veterans that are terminally ill. Every one of these veterans fly absolutely free.
The veteran’s mission to Washington, D.C. includes round-trip airfare, deluxe bus transportation, meals,
commemorative tee shirts, and other amenities needed to travel comfortably. Disabled veterans are also
welcome; with advance arrangements, complimentary wheelchairs and oxygen will be available.
Every trip is escorted by a team of well-trained volunteers and guardians, who personally accompany this elite
group of Freedom Defenders throughout the day. The volunteers and guardians pay their own way, and 100% of
all donations go toward honoring the veterans. Throughout the day of the trip the veterans are thanked, recognized,
and admired for their service to America. They come home personally knowing how much their country loves and
respects them. Help us write this final chapter of their lives. Our American veterans deserve nothing less.
