Skill-Related Fitness Components
The skill-related fitness components help improve your ability to perform skills used in
sports and physical activities
The 6 Skill-Related Fitness Components:
1. Speed- the time it takes to move a certain distance (Measuring test: 40 yard
dash)
2. Power- the ability to combine strength and speed (Measuring test: standing
broad jump)
3. Reaction Time- the time between your senses recognizing a stimulus and your
body moving in response (Measuring test: ruler drop)
4. Balance- the ability to maintain body equilibrium in different movements
(Measuring test: standing on one foot)
5. Agility- the ability to change direction of movement quickly while staying in
control of your body (Measuring test: Jumping back and forth over a line quickly)
6. Coordination- the ability to combine movements of various body parts at the
same time (Measuring test: skipping while tossing a ball back and forth between
hands)
3 Training Principles:
1. Overload- placing higher demands on the body than what it is normally used to
 To increase the level of overload you must use the F.I.T.T. Formula:
 Frequency- the number of days you work out each week
 Intensity- how much energy you use when you work out
 Time- how much time you spend at each work out session
 Type- the activity or exercise performed
2. Progression- gradually increasing the level of exercise
3. Specificity- targeting specific muscle groups or skills to improve performance
