IAM Local1833 Retirees
Another year has come and
gone and it is already February
2017. For the most part, the
weather has been good for
Minnesota. I know many of you
are not in the northern winter
wonderland during this half of the
year, and I hope where ever you
spend your time, the weather has
been good for you, too.
Since the last newsletter,
Retired Club members were busy
with the state and federal
elections, the Thanksgiving
potluck, the annual Holiday Party,
and welcoming a new Congress to
Washington.
For the January meeting,
SAG/AFTRA and MN AFL-CIO
Retiree Council member Barry
ZeVan, the weatherman was our
guest. Brother ZeVan entertained
us with stories of his travels, how,
when and where he got started as
an entertainer, and television
weatherman. And, of course he
talked about his book, “My Life
Among the Giants, A Memoir
(Thank you, Jerry Stiller for urging
1
me to write this book)” which is
for sale through Amazon.com and
from Barry. He truly has led an
amazing life among the “Giants”
of the television, movie,
broadcasting, political and world
leaders. It is my honor to serve
with Barry on the MN AFL-CIO
Retiree Council, where he chairs
the Veterans Committee and uses
his connections to help all
veterans in need. Thank you for
being our guest, Barry.
On the political front: Social
Security, Medicare and Medicaid
will soon be under further attacks
as some members of Congress are
proposing to raise the retirement
age and cut or gut these programs
that help seniors and veterans
with healthcare and medicine. If
you have a moment, I strongly
urge all retirees to contact your
Congressperson and Senators
asking them to protect Social
Security, Medicare and Medicaid
and remind them the President
campaigned to protect these
programs.
Upcoming events to mark on
your calendar: The Minnesota
State Retiree Council, AFL-CIO will
hold an annual fundraiser on
Saturday, April 29 at the Labor
Center in St. Paul (353 West 7th St)
Everyone is invited to attend –
food, beverages, entertainment
and raffles provided. The Local
1833 Retired Members Social Club
is preparing for the annual picnic,
June 15th at the Highland Park
Pavilion, St. Paul. The Local Lodge
is always looking for volunteers to
distribute trinkets at the IAM kiosk
during the State Fair in August (if
you would like a complimentary
ticket, just ask how you can get
one). The Minnesota State Council
Machinist Retirees will host an
annual picnic August 15th for all
retired IAMAW and TCU members
at the Veterans Campground
located north of the Twin Cities on
Big Marine Lake. In November the
Club holds a Thanksgiving potluck
and of course, December is the
annual Holiday Party. Hope you
will be able to join us for one or all
of these events. Always a great
time seeing old friends and
making new ones.
If you have not sent your
annual membership, please see
the enclosed form. We hope you
will continue to be a part of the
Retired Members Social Club.
Have a safe, healthy and happy
rest of the year. See you at the
picnic.
