THANKS HIKURANGI What an awesome parade, the floats were amazing which gave the judges a real dilemma as they could only award three prizes. A Special Thanks to our Sponsors Whangarei District Council and Oxford Sports Trust We would also like to thank the Maori Wardens and Hikurangi Masonic Lodge for their con!nued support; the Hikurangi Hotel and Four Square for the use of their car parks, the Timperleys for the use of their paddock for parking. It was great to see the Fire Service and Ambulance here as well as the Whananaki Coastguard, and a special thanks to the Hikurangi School and their kids who do an awesome job for the day. Congratula'ons to the Winners of the Floats: st 1 Hikurangi School 2nd Village Church 3rd Hikurangi Museum Thanks to all the other par!cipants and floats and of course Santa and his helpers. Thank you to those in the community that have come down and shown an interest in joining the Brigade. Our numbers are now up where they should be. If you are interested in joining you can still come and see us. So if you are looking for a new challenge, want to learn new skills that you cant just learn anywhere and also help your community, come see us Mondays 6.30pm. Monday December the 15th will be our last training for the year and we will be back in mid January with a few weeks break for the Christmas period. We also encourage you, family members and friends to get training in First Aid, it is a valuable skill and you never know when you might need it. There are plenty of places that do First Aid training. Lolly Run 24th Dec. Everything is nearly all ready to go and we are all hoping for some nice weather, so come out on Christmas Eve evening, see Santa and get some lollies, and we will make sure you can hear us coming. We have had some strange weather lately one day it’s awesome next it’s cold so as we chop and change to suit the undecided weather remember to stay safe. When using your heater or fireplace make sure they are all safe to use. And those awesome days doing things around the house getting ready for summer such as having a burn off, keep a clear area around the pile, have sufficient water nearby, check and monitor the wind. An increase in wind of 10kph can double the rate of spread and intensity of your fire, things can change quickly. For more info check out www.havingafire.org.nz Also let the fire service know if you are close to SH1 or if it will be burning for a few hours. Make sure you have smoke alarms & that they are up and are working. Don’t have a smoke alarm? Contact us and we may be able to help you out. All this info and more helpful hints can be found at www.fire.org.nz or contact the Fire Station. Our Operational Support Unit have been out checking hydrants over the last few weeks. We ask if you have a hydrant outside your place, when doing your lawns to have a tidy up around the hydrant. That makes it easier for us to access and spot when we need it. With the 100th Birthday next year we want to hold an event to mark this occasion. We are currently in the planning stage and are looking for fundraising ideas. As we work on a few ideas keep an eye out for events you might be keen on Congratulations to those who won our Meat Raffles at the Christmas Parade and thank you all for our support. Thanks. 100th Anniversary Celebrations: The 5th & 6th December saw the Club hold our 100th Anniversary Celebrations and approximately 170 people attended. President Willie, very smartly attired, welcomed everyone to the celebrations. Congratulations were extended to the Club by Ann Muir, President of Bowls NZ and Jeanette Yovich, President of Bowls Northland. It was great to catch up with the older generation of bowlers who attended and they caught up with the comings and goings of club activities since they ‘retired’ from the game, some of them more than 25 years ago. All our current Life members were in attendance, Jack Coutts, Neville Thomas & Gwen Lawson and they were asked to cut the birthday cake. There was much talk about the past, remembering all those Hikurangi stalwarts who formed the club 100 years ago. A special thank you to our Anniversary committee for their dedication to organising the event. To the Hikurangi Mountain Lions who worked for us on the Friday evening to enable all our members to take part in the celebrations. To all those Club members who put so much effort into ensuring that the celebrations would be a success. To the Kamo Bowling Club members who came and worked for us on the Saturday to enable our own members to play in the Open tournament. Friday Night Catering for Meals will finish on Friday 19th December. Unfortunately the patronage that we are receiving does not warrant us continuing for just a few people. Thank you to those of you who have supported us over the past two years. The Club will continue to do catering for special events and will open on a Friday night for bookings of six or more people. Just phone us at least 24 hours prior and we will gladly open for you. Contact Gwen on 4373050 for bookings. Our Club Twilight Bowls Night and Corner to Corner competition has also been transferred to a Friday and the Club is Open from 4pm. Just arrive at the Club or phone in your name by 5.45pm. The bistro will be open for light snack meals at reasonable cost The cost is $2 for corner to corner and $2 for twilight bowls. Come casual, bowls supplied. No I haven't been seconded to Whangarei I'm still out here. There's not much to report at this stage as I have no idea what has happened whilst I was on leave. However recently there has been a spate of thefts from the rural area, vehicles motor cycles petrol and the like. Also there have been some thefts of lawn mowers, pit bikes, tools from sheds and garages. This is the time to seriously lock up sheds garages etc, also make sure you lock up your houses as well if only for a short while. Prevention is the key. I have, with the help of locals from Marua set up a Rural Watch for their area, this is in conjunction with others that are operating around the rural sector and work very well. The members get registration numbers and photos of suspicious vehicles and persons, my job made easy as I can follow up on why they are in the area. Not all were up to any good but a few were concerned about their privacy, suspicious characters obviously. If they were on legitimate reasons they have nothing to worry about; those who complained to me were told not to go back there then, problem solved. The time is approaching quickly for the "silly season". Just a reminder to all that the Alcohol limit has changedit has been lowered - which means that realistically for adults anyway that having probably one drink could put you over the limit, my advice is if you have a drink, Don't Drive. Also the speed limit has been lowered for the duration of the holiday period - not a lot of tolerance is there. The posted speed is the limit, any thing over that is a fine. This will hopefully reduce the deaths on the roads. I also want to thank everyone who gave my family cards and condolences of the recent passing of my father; it has been hard to lose both my parents in the same year and within six months. A Special thanks to Whaea Ani, Irene and Matiu for their continued support to my family. We do appreciate it. On behalf of my family I want to wish everyone a very Safe and Happy Christmas and look forward to the New Year. Russell LM Rawiri Senior Constable Hikurangi. Christmas Turkey It was Christmas Eve in at the meat counter and a woman was anxiously picking over the last few remaining turkeys in the hope of finding a large one. In desperation she called over a shop assistant and said, 'Excuse me. Do these turkeys get any bigger?' 'No, madam, 'he replied, 'they're all dead.' Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to Mary & Huia for the afternoon tea which followed Prizegiving. Just after the Depression sport was our main outlet for enjoyment. Even in those days to be selected to play in one of the school rugby teams was a great achievement. “Hide and Seek”, “Whistle or Cry” along with playing football with a ball made out of a pigs bladder were our main sources of recreation after school and after the daily chores had been done. I was fortunate at this time to be given an opportunity to earn pocket money by doing a paper run. Initially I used a borrowed bike to carry out the task. Although the monetary reward was small, the dream and opportunity of owning my own bike became real and the incentive to reach this goal sustained me to carry out my task in sometimes the most adverse weather conditions. My parents could not afford to contribute to the purchase of my bike, but they gave me every encouragement and eventually I was able to put a deposit down on a secondhand bike and repayments were made out of the money I received from my paper run. The event of receiving my very own bike and the happiness and joy experienced will always be a memorable one. Polishing, cleaning and repairing punctures were always a pleasure, I treasured that bike. “It was mine”. My outlook on life changed, it made me realise that things of pleasure were no longer beyond reach. A person could reach his goal if he was prepared to work and make some sacrifices toward it. I worked hard toward free-holding that bike. I still had my daily chores to do. I was offered the task of collecting money for papers on Saturday mornings, this I did, it was extra money in my pocket and it gave me the opportunity of paying off my debt sooner. Having worked to acquire my bike made me appreciate the value of owning future articles. I feel that because of that experience I acquired a ser of values which set the basis for my future. I thank my parents for setting the example. The difficult times that prevailed during that period never changed their responsibilities as parents, my brother and I were first and foremost. The love and understanding exhibited by my parents created a family unit of trust, comfort and support for each other. This I feel has reflected in my own life style, through my teens to adulthood. As the years passed conditions improved. On reaching adulthood I was faced with the responsibilities of marriage, buying a house and raising a family. I applied the principles I acquired and remembered the example set by my parents and the basis which brought about that memorable event in my childhood. I feel that the experiences I had as a child have greatly influenced my outlook, as with my children at that impressionable age. I have tried to instill in them the love, understanding and importance of a set of values I derived from the example set by my parents. I am comforted that they did not have to experience times of hardship but I am pleased that through my experiences they appear to have attained a high standard of self respect, respect for others and an outlook on life that will stand them in good stead for the problems and responsibilities they will have to face in adulthood. Freemasons Lodge Our members provided a sheep on the spit and offered a lunch to the community in order to raise funds for the ‘Project Promise’ fund raising for the oncology unit at the Whangarei Base Hospital. The proceeds from this project have been handed to the fund raiser for ‘Project Promise’ and this is now acknowledged with a plaque in the entrance of the facility. The Lodge acknowledges the community for their support of such a worthy cause and funds raised were added to by the Lodge. Involvement of the Lodge with the community has the opportunity to support such worthy causes. The raising of funds has provided support for the building to house the oncology unit and if the unit needs to move there is a building for other medical support units. This means that the efforts of the community will be remain available in the future. The Lodge meets each month and would be interested in any suggested support offered as the main aim is charity. Thus it is hoped that we will hear from those interested.
