Olympic 100 fly golds later in their careers.
(Note: Shields Cal’s first gold-medalist since Croatia’s Duje Draganja set a U.S. Open/NCAA
record with his 45.39 in 2005, breaking Crocker’s 45.44 standard from two years earlier. Prior to
that, only Golden Bear gold-medalist was Par Arvidsson, a Swedish Olympian who won back-toback titles in 1979-’80. He also won the spring U.S. Nationals 100 meter fly in ‘80 a week after
NCAAs. Four months later he struck Olympic gold @ Moscow, as did Cal teammate Bengt Baron
in the 100 meter backstroke. Add in sprinter Pele Holmertz, yet ANOTHER Cal swimmer
at the time, and you had the makings of a pretty good medley relay.
