A LEADER IN OUR COMMUNITY
For nearly two decades, the John Roberts Company has been a leader in
responsible environmental stewardship in our community. The company’s
many successes have garnered recognition with numerous state and
national awards, including the Minnesota Governor’s Award for Excellence
in Pollution Prevention (twice), the Minnesota Environmental Initiative
Award, the Green Star Award, and many others.
Beginning in the 1980s with the establishment of a very active
Environmental Committee comprised of staff and production employees
from all departments, the company charted a course to minimize its impact
on the environment. Establishment of a clear and concise environmental
policy was quickly followed by an environmental management system
(EMS) for management of all the company’s environmental affairs.
The EMS is core to environmental regulatory compliance and continual
improvement through measurement and corrective action.
The company, the first nationally to establish a process to recover cleaning
solvents from soiled shop towels, now distills and reuses almost all of its
press wash solvents right in its own facility, minimizing the generation of
hazardous waste. Investment in regenerative thermal emissions controls
not only eliminates 99+% of air emissions, the technology dramatically
reduces consumption of natural gas for the process.
John Roberts partners closely with its vendors to reduce energy use. Center
Point Energy has focused the company’s attention on improving HVAC
system efficiency, eliminating the need for a standard boiler for building
heat. Again, less natural gas consumed.
Xcel Energy helped the company to select and install energy-saving T8
fluorescent lighting throughout its facility. With Xcel’s help, the company
optimized its compressed air system, a major user of power. The result:
reduced electrical energy needs. And, as a part of EPA’s Green Power
program, the company now purchases 10% of its electrical energy right on
its own power grid, making a difference right here in Minnesota, not some
distant location.

2008 ANNUAL LEGISLATIVE RECEPTION
MAJESTIC OAKS JANUARY 10
The annual Chamber Legislative Reception
is scheduled to take place on Thursday
evening, January 10th, from 5:00 – 7:30
p.m. It will be held at Majestic Oaks
Country Club in Ham Lake. The difference
this year from past legislative receptions
is that the Anoka County business community will be united with participation
from many other chamber organizations.
In addition, we will join forces with the
North Metro REALTORS Association.
There is no formal presentation at this
event except for a brief candidate introduction. This allows you the opportunity
to meet individually with your legislative
representative. By collectively participating in this reception, you can help drive
the business agenda at the state legislature.
Furthermore, the political access that this
reception provides is free. There is no
charge for the hors d’oeuvres.
Reservations are required. Please call the
Chamber office at (763) 783-3553 or email [email protected].

Printing at John Roberts utilizes environmentally friendly paper as certified
by the Forest Stewardship Council, and a good many projects are printed on
high-recycled-content paper stocks with soy-based inks. Using state-of-the-art
printing presses with electronic color controls helps minimize waste paper in
printing. And what waste paper generated is recycled. In fact, in all of 2007,
the company recycled more than 5,460 tons of trim paper back to paper mills
to made into new paper stock!
With today’s concerns about global warming, many companies are evaluating
their carbon footprint, the release of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere as a result of their operations. The idea here is to modify
operations to minimize release of carbon dioxide, and to offset any remaining
carbon emissions through activities such as purchase of wind-generated
electrical power.
John Roberts Company, having just completed a scientific study of its carbon
footprint, is pleased to announce that the company is carbon neutral. That
is, there is no atmospheric net gain in carbon emissions due to the company’s
production and distribution activities!
The John Roberts Company and all of its employees are proud of the
accomplishments in sustaining responsible environmental stewardship.

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Three new members join Board this month
Three new members were elected to the MetroNorth
Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors at the
annual meeting on December 4th. The new directors
are Dean Richards, Mary Tjosvold, and Lisa Tollakson.
DEAN RICHARDS is a shareholder and CPA at
the accounting firm of Smith Schafer & Associates
Ltd. The firm has offices in Maplewood, Edina, and
Rochester. Dean has been with them for 17 years,
dealing primarily with closely-held businesses,
nonprofit plans, and individual taxation.
Dean has served as chair of MetroNorth’s golf
committee and has been active in membership drives
and networking groups. His goals for the Chamber
include keeping it economically viable, promoting
networking opportunities for businesses, and
continuing to be active in the legislative process.
“MetroNorth is strong in how active it’s been
in political activities, and it’s a step above most
Chambers in the programs and speakers that Tom
Snell comes up with,” he said.
Dean and his wife, Cindy, have three children: Tyler,
Brandon, and Cassedy.
MARY TJOSVOLD owns Mary T., Inc., an
organization that manages rental communities,
supportive living facilities, and home health services.
The company, which she founded in 1976, now
operates in four states and employs 800 full and parttime staff members.
Mary earned her Ph.D. in Education Administration
from the University of Minnesota and later completed
the Owner/President Management program at
Harvard Business School. She has written or coauthored seven books on leadership and on working
with the handicapped and elderly. She has given
presentations and workshops on many subjects and
serves on numerous task forces and executive boards,
including the Volunteers of America and the American
Refugee Committee (ARC). Her work with the ARC
has taken her to many countries in Africa, Asia, and
South America. She founded a school in Cameroon
which is named after her mother, Margaret, who has
also been involved with the operation of Mary T., Inc.
A long-time member of MetroNorth, Mary hopes to
see the Chamber active in ecological, educational, and
political issues. “I see the strength of the Chamber,”
she said, “as being able to engage the community in
developing the kind of quality community that we all
want to live in - whether it’s parks, water quality, the
political process, or education.”
LISA TOLLAKSON is VP/Regional Sales Manager
at TCF Bank. She has been a member of MetroNorth
for five years, and previously was part of the Elk
River Chamber. Lisa has been very active in the Gala
Committee ever since joining MetroNorth, and also
chaired the Ambassador Committee. “I’ve really
enjoyed working with the Chamber, and I’m thankful
that I have a company that supports my involvement,”
said Lisa.
Lisa looks forward to working with the Board.
“I think the board is continuing to become more
involved in what happens on a day-to-day basis with
different committees, and Board members are just as
much ambassadors of the Chamber as any member
of the Ambassador Committee,” she said. “It’ll be fun
to be in a group of very professional, strong-minded,
and stimulating people like this. It’ll be interesting to
see how they get together and interact in a civilized
way on possibly controversial issues. I enjoy a good
debate!”
Lisa and her husband, Brett, have two children: Ally
and Whitney.
MetroNorth wants to thank the three outgoing
Board members - Jolene Trauba, Jerry Teeson,
and Mary Schutta, CPA - for their invaluable service
to the Chamber during their terms.

DEB BARBELN IS CHOSEN
AMBASSADOR OF THE YEAR
Deb Barbeln has been named the first recipient of MetroNorth’s
Ambassador of the Year Award. The honor recognizes Deb’s
leadership and tireless efforts in welcoming new Chamber members
and conducting ribbon cuttings for area businesses.
Deb has been an active member of the Ambassador Committee
since joining MetroNorth three years ago.
“I like being able to greet the new businesses that come into the
community,” Deb said, “and to let them know that the Ambassador
Committee, as part of the Chamber, will spread the news about
their company and hopefully help them to build their business.”
With a laugh, she adds: “I also like the fact that most of the
businesses serve food at their ribbon cuttings!”
The Ambassador of the Year title is awarded on a point system,
based on the number of meetings and ribbon cuttings a person
attends, and also on the number of times he or she takes the lead
in presenting the gift basket and welcoming the business to the
MetroNorth community.
“I wasn’t trying for an award,” said Deb. “I’m just very comfortable
speaking in front of people. Also, working with the Ambassadors
doesn’t have anything to do with what I may receive back in the way
of business. I look at involvement in the Ambassadors as a way to
help people, and that makes me feel good.”
When Deb welcomes a new business, she lets them know
about the Chamber’s programs that help new companies become
acclimated to the area. “Most of all, I always stress the networking
breakfasts as a good place to start,” she explained. Deb regularly
attends both the Coon Rapids and Blaine Sunrise Networking
groups, and served as chair of the Blaine group for a year and a half.
She finds that networking has been very important to her success.
“In my business, being visible is paramount,” she said.
Deb has worked with Mary Kay Cosmetics for over 21 years, and
has served as a sales director for the last five. She leads a group of
40 people whom she has personally introduced into the business.
Deb and her husband, Tom, have three grown sons and make their
home near Isanti.
A special thank you to the new Applebee’s – Blaine
for donating all the money from their Grand Opening
Celebration to Toys For Joy. They cut a check for
$3183.00. This money will stay in Anoka County. We
are proud and honored to have Members like you.

With educational issues highly prominent in the news at the moment, why not take a visit to a school where learning is thriving?
Minnesota Renaissance School (MRS), a unique, private, non-sectarian Montessori-based school, offers a solid confidence-building
program for children ages 33 months through grade 8. Using the
Montessori method, which has 100 + years of proven educational
success, MRS teachers provide a peaceful hands-on learning environment where children learn at their own pace not the teacher’s
pace, where grace and courtesy are the norm, and where the child
learns independence and self-discipline. Montessori emphasizes
learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Furthermore, it isn’t until the student has fully mastered a lesson that the teacher moves forward to the next lesson,
ensuring steady progress for each child.
