Nokian Tyres developed the world’s first winter tyre for the winter
frost in 1934. Two years later, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta was born
in the Nordic winter; currently, it is one of the most well-known
winter tyre brands in the world. The Hakkapeliitta tyre will celebrate its 80th birthday in 2016.
The history of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter tyres is colourful
and rich in acclaim. The manufacturing of the Hakkapeliittas started in 1936, and they were introduced internationally by the legendary Monte Carlo rallies in the 1950s and 1960s. Cars equipped
with studded Kometa-Hakkapeliittas dominated the snowy and
icy mountain roads.
Since 1936, this pioneer of the tyre industry has introduced a
total of 44 Hakkapeliitta products as studded and studless winter
tyres for passenger cars and heavy equipment.
Numerous innovations, over one hundred winter tyre patents
and high rankings in magazine tests year after year have made
them legendary.
Over the decades, the basic principle of tyre development has
remained exactly the same: our goal is to develop tyres for Northern drivers who value safety and require reliable performance
under all conditions.
State-of-the-art green winter tyre technology
Nokian Tyres developed the most energy-efficient winter tyre in
the automotive industry for drivers of electric vehicles. According
to the EU tyre label, the new Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2 is in the
best class A for fuel efficiency. This next-generation Hakkapeliitta
winter tyre that combines longer range and first-class grip is designed for BMW’s i3 electric vehicles and i8 hybrids. The new tyre
model is available in the following sizes: 155/70 R19 84Q and
215/45 R20 95R XL.

Nokian WR D3
Nokian WR D3, designed for the variable winter conditions
of Central Europe, is a sound choice for small and mid-sized
family cars and for motorists who value economical and safe
driving. Preventing slush planing was a key consideration in
the design process: the slanting, staggered front edge of the
tread blocks flings water and slush away from the tyre grooves.
The tyre’s Cool Touch Design siping minimises the friction and
heat emission caused by unnecessary sipe movement. A lighter rolling tyre means lower fuel consumption and lower carbon
dioxide emissions.

and comfortable rolling were fine-tuned using
a new-generation rubber compound, a tailored
tread model, and the Nokian Cryo Crystal Concept that boosts optimal lateral and longitudinal
grip. Eco-friendly grip particles that have the
appearance of a multi-edged crystal have been
added to the rubber compound in order to improve grip on ice by grabbing onto the driving

simulate driving extremes during all seasons
and under all possible conditions.

At the grip limits.
Relentless testing at the extremes and finding the limits is
also a part of the development process for the world’s best
winter tyres. In March 2013, we achieved a fantastic world record for the fastest car on ice, as our test driver Janne Laitinen
achieved a speed of 335.713 km/h (208.602 mph) on the
ice of the Gulf of Bothnia. The car traveled over 93 metres
per second on the uneven ice track, and the studs hit the ice
43 times per second. Grip and speed like never before were
guaranteed by the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tyre.
Nokian Tyres and Laitinen, who has worked as a tyre testing professional for over twenty-five years, also hold the earlier Guinness World Record for driving on ice ( 331.61 km/h,
206.05 mph ), and the record for driving on ice with an electric
car (252.06 km/h, 156.62 mph).

Each tread block and sipe in the stylish tread pattern has a precise shape and role, and this can be

The deep and open channels on the centre blocks

boost the functionality of the sipes under the most
slippery conditions. The wider sipe activates a
narrower one.
The slanting, staggered front edge of the block

The more easily a tyre rolls, the less fuel it consumes and the fewer C02 emissions it generates. A
40% difference in rolling resistance transforms into

Take care of your Nokian tyres
Nokian tyres are designed to endure the
changing weather and road conditions.
With these few tips, you can keep your
tyres in top shape so that they can ensure
a safe drive for you.
Q
Do tyres need to be run in ?
A
We recommend tyres to be run in for 500 km after
their mounting. Therefore, avoid strong acceleration, breaking and turning at first. During the
running-in, the tyre grease that is used between
the tyre and the rim in the mounting dries, which
makes the tyre remain tightly in place in relation
to the rim. Remember to after-tighten the nuts/
bolts after driving ca. 200 km.

What are the recommended
inflation pressures?
A
Nokian Tyres has test driven the recommended
inflation pressures for winter tyres (M+S) for the
most common car makes. The recommended
pressures may exceed the car manufacturer recommendations, as the winter tyre has a different
structure. If there is no recommended inflation
pressure for winter tyres, we recommend winter
tyres to be inflated 0.2 bar (20 kpa) higher than
the summer recommendation. The pressure levels
must be inspected by using a calibrated gauge
with cold tyres every three (3) weeks.

Should tyres be rotated
from the front to back?
Drive tyres wear more quickly than free-rolling
tyres. We recommend tyres to be rotated from the
front axle to the rear axle ca. every 8,000 km. This
way, the tyre wear is evened out and the total
driving distance of the tyres is maximised. The
rotation direction that is marked on the tyre must
be followed.

What if the tyre is damaged?
Q
How long will the tyres last?
A
If a tyre is damaged, avoid driving on an underinflated tyre. Take the tyre to a tyre dealer for assessment and repair.

The safe service life for tyres is six (6) years. The
maximum life is ten (10) years. The safe minimum
tread depth for winter tyres is 4 mm. We do not
recommend winter tyres (M+S) to be used under
summer conditions. Between seasons, the tyres
must be stored in a cool, dark and dry space. The
tyres must not touch solvent substances such as oil,
gasoline or lubricants.

Tailored tyres
for the right conditions.
Starting in November 2012, the European
Union introduced a new EU tyre labelling.
The EU tyre label will help consumers
compare tyres in terms of fuel economy,
wet grip, and external rolling noise.
The tyre label applies to tyres for passenger cars, 4x4s, vans, trucks, and buses
that are manufactured after 1 July 2012
and that are approved for road use. The
label does not apply to studded tyres.
Winter conditions
not taken into account
The classification is based on Central European conditions,
including tyre grip on a wet surface. For now, the new
tyre label does not take into account grip on ice, which
is essential for winter tyres and real winter conditions. As
regards winter tyres, studded tyres have been left completely out of the classification.
The selection of a tyre is a sum of many
components
Although the new EU tyre label makes it easier to compare
different tyres and provide consumers with useful information, there are a number of other properties, in addition to
the three classification criteria, that affect safe driving and
are valued by drivers.
These properties include:
• Handling on different surfaces
• Performance on ice and snow
• Ability to withstand aquaplaning
• Durability and wear

consult professional tyre retailers and study independent
tyre comparison tests in motoring magazines that compare
