Tiger Woods-what is there to say?
The best golfer to ever play the
game? Probably yes. Why? A freak
of nature physically? Another yes. A
mental giant among his peers? Still
another yes. How did this happen? A
simple answer: junior golf training,
parents who formed his early values,
an athletic body that would probably
adapt to any sport, and an early
awareness of the mental chess game
called golf.
What sport has these factors?

We recommend and appreciate Soft Spikes--we can change them for you too!
In a 4.5 hour round of golf there is
less than 2 minutes of physical action.
It takes 1.6 to 2 seconds to swing a
golf club. Imagine any sport (let's
take boxing). You get hit with a
Tyson left hook and you have to wait
7 to 9 minutes to hit him back. What
is going through your mind, positive
or negative thoughts? You get hit
again with a right uppercut and wait 7
to 9 minutes again.

sure situations. Yes, it's a mental
game, with the oddest set of rules of
any sport:
A. You must be your own
referee, calling penalties on
yourself
Check the scores on this year's
school. A great example would be
our two touring professionals, Byron
Schlagenhauf and Dan Arroyo. One
round over par at the first school and
you're gone.
B. No coaches when playing.
A caddy can give advice, but
the caddy cannot help during
your swing
C. Finance your own play.
No million-dollar bonuses.
D. Arrange your own travel
and lodging
Yes, this is the ultimate sport of
integrity and mental toughness, and
the physical aspect requires hand-eye
coordination similar to car racing.
PGA Qualifying School
This is the most brutal tournament
anywhere in the world--thousands of
professionals vying for 35 spots. In
234 hours of competition, if you
shoot over par in any round you are
in the history books. Find a bus,
train, car, or plane out of town.

Yours truly was going to try once
again, but realistically, if you don't
play and practice 8 hours a day, it is
virtually impossible to be a part-time
player against world class competition. The decision not to compete is a
difficult one and will always keep
you wondering, "Can I still do it?"
Golfers are eternal optimists. I will
continue to play on a local level and
who knows, maybe a U.S. Open, or

Golf Course News
Awards
What a year for our golf course! We
were voted the Best Golf Course in
the Bay Area by the readers of the
Contra Costa Times and Best course
in Northern California for the price
by the San Francisco Chronicle’s
study.
Reservation System
Is the new reservation system working? Is it user-friendly? We need
responses for upgrading. Any system, especially a reservation system
that is in high demand, needs to be
debugged and tweaked, as we all
become accustomed to its use.
A bonanza for residents, reservations
7 days in advance gives residents the
availability of a private country club.
Irrigation System
We are extremely satisfied with our
new irrigation system. Any new system will require coverage adjustments. With over 1,600 sprinkler
heads, water output, nozzle pressures,
and adapting to wind conditions will
need to be addressed.
Capital Improvements
The upgrading of Boundary Oak was
a pleasure. New irrigation, cart paths,
championship putting green at the
driving range, and leveled and
replanted tees have put our championship facility alongside some of the
multi-million dollar facilities that are
now being built. Our ranking, as the
number one golf course for the price,
by the San Francisco Chronicle was
the pinnacle of our year.
Golf Club and Merchandise
updates
The Internet will be changing the way
golfers purchase golf equipment and
merchandise. To buy a golf club on
the Internet is like Russian Roulette if
you are not properly fitted. Beware
of prices that are lower than any
advertised discount price. You could
be buying seconds, or shafts and
heads that are not weighted and calibrated for proper stiffness. The good
news is the discount Internet has been
installed at golf course facilities that
stand behind the merchandise that
you are buying. Sign up now, no
charge at www.myproshop.com and
receive the best of both worlds-quality merchandise at an affordable price,
with purchasing of any pro shop item
sold anywhere in the world.

fitting. I have never changed any
golfer to a full finger grip that
changed back to the antiquated interlocking or popular overlapping grips.
Gain power and accuracy.
Senior
What golfer shot 126 in the 1991
Vantage Championship, the richest
tournament at that time on the Senior
Tour-1.5 million dollars? Hint: A
friend of mine.
What golfer was leading the Senior
PGA Championship after 27 holes
and missed the cut after 36 holes with
a 17 stroke differential from front
nine to back nine?
What is the longest sudden death
play-off in history on the Pro Golf
Tours? Harold Henning, a personal
friend, was the winner.
The first 10 golfers that answer the
trivia questions correctly will receive
a free round of golf and a $25 gift
certificate.
I was told I was one of the favorites
to watch and talk to on the Senior
Tour. I didn't realize why this was
until I was on the 10th tee at the
Vantage Tournament in South
Carolina. I had just won the Long
Driving Championship and I overheard two gallery golfers talking. "I'll
flip the coin and you call it to see
who will walk up and talk to Boldt." I
asked the winner of the coin toss,
"What were you doing back there?"
The golfer stated, "I won the coin toss
and I chose the right rough to come
and see you. You are a gallery
favorite because you always walk
with us in the rough and woods.
Don't you remember me? I've been
walking with you the last 6 holes on
the right side of the trees."
As a golfer ages, the fairways get
longer, the holes get smaller, your
memory shorter…and you usually
yell fore, shoot six and put down five.
The most honest man can become a
liar, altruists become egocentric,
macho men have temerity and fools
abound, in a 19th hole pageant of
what didn't actually happen on the
golf course.
Junior Program
Kudos to our staff, Dave DeLong,
Jeff Cassidy, Wayne Cavazza, Jason
Boldt and Rob Boldt, for the dedication to our Junior program. We were
recognized by the NCPGA as having
the number one junior program in
Northern California. I will receive
this award at our annual meeting and
could not be prouder of our professional staff, who made this award
possible. Thanks go to Danielle
Eiffel and our Ladies, who are the
backbone of our junior program.

Caddies
Happy Holidays
Is a caddy important, and how many
strokes can a caddy help (or hurt)
your score? A qualified tour caddy
can be a one to two stroke advantage
per round. Knowing your swing,
reading putts, a second opinion on
club selections, all can be the difference between winning and losing.
Caddies can also be a hindrance. I
was playing in a Nike tournament
with my wife as my caddy. A disagreement on my playing and various
other marital factors ensued, so I fired
her on the course. As the round progressed I looked up on the leader
board to see one of my best friends
leading the tournament. I was very
happy for him until I saw who was
caddying for him. Yes, my wife
whom I had just fired for being
incompetent!

The difference between golf and
being the president of the United
States is that in golf you can improve
your lie. If you are caught, a penalty
or disqualification can be the result.
Being the president, improved lies
could result in winning tournaments if
the officials can be convinced the lies
weren't really changed.
