Overview
We have secured an opportunity for St. Vrain students to connect with Fabian Cousteau, the grandson of
the world famous Jacque Cousteau, and his science team Mission 31, during their world record 31-day
stay in Aquarius, an underwater scientific research lab located off the Florida Keys.
This connection will be made using Adobe Connect software and will be accessible to 100 connections at
one time. To enrich this experience the following organizations have agreed to participate in various ways
with St. Vrain students and share the experience with their list of International educators. The GLOBE
Program, Teens4Oceans, the Colorado Ocean Coalition, Connect Ocean, Mission Tiburon and Junior
Scientist in the Sea. (There is a detailed overview of each organization below) Students will be introduced
to the wonders of the deep ocean as well as the challenges of living under the sea for 31 days. Together,
we will explore the inland ocean connection, and how each of us play a part in ocean conservation from a
mile high. There is an opportunity for in class visits and webinars with marine biologist and ecologist
prior to the culminating event, connecting with Aquarius for a mission update and the opportunity to ask
questions and interact with the aquanauts.
LIVE Event - Monday, June 23rd 8:30 to 10:15 MST

SVVSD Event Responsibilities
● Provide technical support for the Adobe Connect connection to Aquarius in Florida and groups in
Costa Rica. (Adobe Connect Channel has been established – Bud Hunt, Mike O’Toole)
● Establish a Google Form for Webinar registration
● Provide FAQ materials and 3rd party Education Materials for participants (completed below)
● Host and broadcast the Webinar from the Innovation Center including an area for general public to
view the webinar in person.
Viewing Event at Innovation Center – On the day of the Event, Monday June 23rd starting at 8:15 AM
MST, St. Vrain Valley Schools will host a 1 hour and 45 minute viewing part at the St. Vrain Innovation
Center, 1200 South Sunset Street, Longmont, Colorado 80501, for the general public and members of the
St. Vrain community not involved in the STEM Summer Schools.
Participation / Education Connections
Registration – To participate in the webinar schools would simply click on the link provided on
promotional information and sign up prior to the event via Google Forum. IC Staff would then send out
educational materials several weeks prior to the event and the link to the webinar two or three days prior
the event. Mission 31 / St. Vrain Registration
Education Materials – The following educational materials broken down by grade level have been
provided by both Mission 31 and the National Science Foundation. Each activity is supported by National
Science, Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. Activities are interactive and include
several short videos and visualizations. There is also an opportunity to create a design thinking activity for
our STEM Summer Schools based on the materials below.

Viewing Options – To maximize student participation and to condense the number of logins, here are a
couple suggestions. This would be up to each school and the STEM Coordinator at each school would be
the lead. The number one goal is to learn, explore and have fun!
o Class Viewing – Join the Adventure with an individual class using a single screen
o Grade Level Assembly – All 4th Graders join the Adventure on one screen
o School Assembly – Have all students join the Adventure on a big screen. Another idea is to
through a Beach Party… Have students dress up on that day to have fun with the experience.
How to ask questions – During the Webinar there will be an opportunity for viewers to ask questions of
Fabian and his team as well as those in Costa Rica. This will be explained in detail in the FAQ section.
The first several questions will be scripted for the webinar, meaning the first 3 schools will know they
have a question upcoming and they will work with their student on to how to appropriately ask a question.
These first couple examples will set the stage for further questions.
Partnerships
Below is a list of all groups involved and a brief description of their participation and responsibilities.
Each group is a non-profit organization.

experiential education, research, technology and conservation. Inspired by ocean science, teens work
together to share their passion with their community, explore the ocean in various ways and exchange
ideas for how to take action to protect it. Based in land-locked Colorado but driven by love for the ocean,
T4O students share their passion with their community, explore the ocean in various ways, exchange
ideas for how to protect it, and connect with students around the world. Teens4Oceans aims to unite
students with scientists and nonprofits to create global ocean awareness and to work together towards
ocean conservation.
Participation
● Distribute information through the Teens4Oceans network
● Invite one of their student chapters to be present at the LIVE broadcast at the St. Vrain innovation
Center.

10-minute presentation will be an introduction and LIVE Web Cams.
● Assist with school visits and potential webinars prior to the Mission 31 Event.
● Assist in hosting the LIVE broadcast (1 speaker)
Junior Scientist in the Sea – Jr. Scientists in the Sea is a non-profit organization reaching out to students
with a passion for diving, research, engineering and exciting hands-on activities. It is an educational
program that engages you in physical activity, learning responsibility and accountability all while being
just plain fun. Students learn what it takes to explore and work in the oceans of the world, as well as the
importance of watershed and estuarine stewardship.
Participation:
● Distribute information through the organizations network
● Provide 1 speaker virtually to present during the LIVE webinar. The topic of the 10-minute
presentation will be an introduction to the organization.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Mission 31?
A new ocean exploration endeavor, Mission 31, led by noted oceanographic explorer and filmmaker
Fabien Cousteau will launch this fall with several exciting scientific objectives including testing new
technologies such as autonomous underwater robots, researching the effects of climate change on coral
reefs, studying the physiology of long-term submersion and the effects of long-term confinement on brain
function.
Mission 31 is an exciting educational opportunity where students can learn about the research and
discovery of this groundbreaking mission and have the chance to chat with the aquanauts. Learn more at
Mission31.com
When is the SVVSD STEM / Mission 31 Webinar?
Monday, June 23rd 8:30 to 10:15 AM MST
How long is the SVVSD STEM / Mission 31 Webinar?
The Webinar will last approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The first 30 minutes we will be introduced to
ocean conservation projects taking place on the Pacific Ocean in Costa Rica followed by a 20 minute
update on Mission 31. The remainder of the time is reserved for student questions.
How can my school sign up for the Mission 31 Webinar?

How can my students participate in the Mission 31 Webinars?
Once your class is registered, join the webinar at the scheduled time. After the mission update, several
schools will be selected to ask questions of the scientists and explorers of Aquarius. You will be notified
during the webinar via the chat window if your school is selected. Please have a student representative
ready to speak clearly into the microphone with their science related question.
How will students benefit from participating in Mission 31?
Students will participate in an adventure to the bottom of the sea without leaving the classroom. They will
have the opportunity to represent the youth of Colorado, learning about the science and technology
required in ocean exploration and how they can become stewards of the ocean from a mile high. Students
will interact with explorers and scientists LIVE, 63 feet below the surface.
What resources will be available for Teachers?
Teachers will receive information and learning activities, aligned with national science standards from
both the Colorado Ocean Coalition and Mission 31. These activities include the theme of inland "land
locked" regions and how everyone, no matter how far they live from the coast, depends on our oceans.
Students will also be introduced to the important role they play in the conservation and future of the sea.
Who is sponsoring the SVVSD / Mission 31 Webinar?
St. Vrain Valley School District and Teens4Oceans have teamed up to provide the opportunity for
students to participate in the LIVE webinar with Aquanauts from the ocean floor. The Teens4Oceans is a
local non-profit organization whose mission is to promote healthy oceans through education and
community engagement. You can learn more about Teens4Oceans at Teens4Oceans.org.
What are the technical requirements to participate?
