NORCAL GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB www.norcalgrc.org Golden Notes SUMMER 2016 Elected Officers: President Laura Finco Secretary/ Treasurer Tammy Ballew 281 Dry Creek Rd Hollister, CA 95023-5168 VP Performance Christine Hsu VP Breed Robin Baker VP Field Debbie Tandoc Director Jennifer Masterson Director Ken Blanchard Standing Officials Financial Secretary Patty Simmons Membership Secretary Letty Regan How 18 Months Changed My Life VOLUME 47, ISSUE I By Laura Finco; NORCAL GRC President Back in February 2015, we said good-bye to our 12 year old Golden Girl, Starr aka Argus’ Celestial Awakenings, CD, OA, OAJ. At that time we knew it was going to be the start of a hard period of time since four of our dogs were all over 10 years of age. But knowing it was going to be a hard time and going through it are two very different things. Starr was diagnosed with mandibular cancer and true to golden form she was strong to the very last day when we had to make the decision to let her go. We had not experienced mandibular cancer although we were familiar with other forms of cancer that affect our breed. We learned a lot about a dog’s ability to deal with illness and holistic treatments such as Yunnan Bayiao (a Chinese herb used in bleeding disorders). This information proved beneficial when CH Shyan’s Argus’ Tribute, CD, AX, AXJ, NF aka Jester was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma and subsequently passed away August 2015. He was 12 years old. Ironically, just six months earlier we had Jester in for some x-rays and nothing showed up on film. Hemangiosarcoma is vicious and stealth. Another unusual and rare illness that we experienced during these past 18 months, hitting my heart dog Sunshine aka Argus’ Rise of the Phoenix, CD, MX, MXJ, MPJ, OF was T-cell subcutaneous lymphosarcoma (an autoimmune disease). This condition presented itself as skin sores in the summer of 2015 and progressed rapidly. Our understanding is most dogs do not survive very long, but Sunshine fought hard. She left us April 2016, just shy of being 12 years old and nine months after the disease first hit. But the most difficult goodbye was yet to come. Inside this issue: From the President 1 Editor’s Bark 2 Guide Dog Puppy Raisers 2 Petra Ford Seminar Report 3 National Specialty Update 4 Our girl (and littermate to Starr), Spice aka Argus’ Celestial Seasonings had just celebrated her 13th birthday. We Volunteers Needed! 5 had a huge celebration with all of the neighborhood children. Spice loved these kids and the feeling was mutual. They made Club Announcements 6 up a little song just for her and sang it with gusto! We had noticed that Spice was breathing a bit harder but chocked it up Lake/Drake Cluster 7 to her being an older dog. Then just a week before we were to Members Brag 8 leave on vacation, Spice was rushed into the veterinary clinic in respiratory distress. She was suffering from aspiration Club Information 9 pneumonia. We later discovered that AP is a symptom of myathensia gravis, another autoimmune disorder that strikes the neurological system. This condition is very treatable although it is difficult to diagnosis. Too often veterinarians diagnosis megaesophagus and stop there. Myathensia gravis is actually very treatable if properly diagnosed and controlled. We were very fortunate in that the veterinarian in charge of Spice’s case was dedicated to treating her and getting her healthy in spite of her age. Spice spent nearly three weeks in the hospital, racking up over $15K in medical bills but on the day we brought her home, her spirits were high and we had our girl. Unfortunately, our joy was short lived as another bout of aspiration pneumonia hit her two weeks after she came home. Spice lost her battle on July 6, 2016. The last twenty years we Having senior dogs is a blessing but as the last 18 months have taught me, it can also be a curse. The heartbreak every six months has left us exhausted (and to be honest, financially stressed). Ask me though if I would do it differently and my answer would be “no.” have seen a better understanding of canine health. The GRCA has dedicated efforts to establishing grants and research so that as breeders and dog sport enthusiasts, we can improve the longevity and health of our beautiful breed. The Morris Foundation’s Golden Retriever Lifetime Study (3000 Strong) is a comprehensive research project that will is giving many of us much hope for the future; answers we hope will come in order to not only extend the life All of us who have had the good fortune of being loved by a dog, especially a senior Golden Retriever know the joy each tail wag and that indescribable feeling; the unspoken bond. The words have not yet been invented. As I write this, I am watching six newborn puppies. Their eyes have just opened and they roll around over each other as the enter that “milk coma” after feeding. It is my hope that the next 10+ years for these puppies will bring joy and love to their respective families; that they will have full and long lives. I hope that through studies and research we will have a better understanding of illnesses that strike. Not only cancer but autoimmune and neurological conditions that with early detection can be treated. I know I am not the only one who has recently experienced loss. My heart goes out to all. We’ve all been there and understand. Hug your Goldens today. And the next time you come home to a pillow shredded or garden dug up, just smile. There will be a day when you long for those flying feathers! Puppy Love! Becoming a Guide Dogs for the Blind (GDB) Puppy Raiser takes a bit of time. Prospective raisers complete an application and are required to attend weekly classes to become familiar with GDB protocols and policies. Next comes a home visit, during which there is a home inspection for possible hazards and insure the home meets GDB requirements, e.g., fenced yard and no toxic plants. Once that is done, a Puppy Placement Questionnaire is completed and sent to GDB. The final step, depending upon puppy availability, is the assignment of a puppy. Puppy raisers will have the pups from approximately 8 weeks of age until the dog is recalled to GDB for formal training, usually between 14 and 18 months of age. Older pups and their raisers attend semi monthly meetings. Dee Dee & Billy and Patti ran the Saturday seminar and Dimity Mueller, Terry Southard, and Rich & Eileen ran the Sunday Seminar. All hospitality was donated by club members. Thank you to Dee Dee Anderson, Patti Kostakis, Trish Miller, Carole Steding, Dimity Mueller, Mary Ann Graziano, Shelly Johnson, Janet Peacock, Susan Dickerson & Eileen Oshiro for providing food for both breakfast and lunch. We also made exercise boxes to sell which were made by club members Janet Peacock, Terry Southard, Michelle Pressel, Dan & Dimity Mueller, Jeff Finn (not a member) Patti Kostakis and Billy & Dee Dee Anderson. All material was donated in the making of the boxes – we could have sold more! It looks like this was misplaced and never view by Norcal members. Our apology to the club members that worked so hard to put this great event on last November. This Seminar was a huge success bringing in a $6684.93 profit for the 2016 National. What a testament to the members that helped put it on. There were 79 attending and all that attended seemed to have a great time. Everyone learned so much form Petra about keeping their dogs fit for life, as well as for all areas of competition, thank you Petra! The two one day seminars were conducted in two locations, which allowed more people to attend. Much thanks goes to Patti Kostakis for taking on the secretary position and fielding all the phone calls, it was a full time job! Thanks goes to Dee Dee & National Workshop Billy Anderson for donation Fundraiser their building on the Saturday Held at the Dream Big Trainand to Rich & Eileen Oshiro ing Center brought in for securing the building in $1000.00! This turned out to be one of the easiest ways to earn money with little help. The workshop was limited, with Dee Dee & Billy Anderson donating the use of their building again. But it did take club members to come and volunteer their time. Much thanks to Patti Kostakis, Terry Southard, Dimity Mueller, Susan Dick- erson, Janet Bennett (not a member), Jayne Hurkman, & Dee Dee & Billy Anderson. NORCAL Specialty Obedience & Rally Last October NORCAL had the largest entry for Obedience & Rally in years! It was an 8 hour judging assignment. Thanks to Betty Brask our judge for making the day run smoothly. We offered Rally team for the first year and it was a big hit with four teams entered! Much fun was had by all participating and watching. This was my 7th year as Obedience chair and as we know you cannot do the job by yourself. Thanks to those that helped set up and clean the ring on Wednesday afternoon: Dimity Mueller, Patti Kostakis, Michelle & Bill Evans, & Sue Stauffer. Ring Stewards were: Pam Tyson, Sandy Svendsen, Carole Steding, and Billy Anderson. Clean up at 5:00 was: Pam McDonald, Lisa Newton, Patti Kostakis & Pam Tyson. If I missed any one my apologies. To Jennifer Masterson, much thanks for taking on the Show Chair job. Together we managed to bring this show together with many other NORCAL members. It was fun working with you! Dee Dee Anderson National – Obedience and Rally Oct 4th & 5th. We are working every day on the final touches for the two days of Obedience and Rally. Help is needed for the following: *Warm up ring time on Oct 3rd 4:00 – Need 4 timers for each ring. *Ring Stewards for both Obedience and Rally. *Food for Tuesday to feed all exhibitors. There will be a free lunch this day for all that help and exhibit. It will be a taco bar. We are still looking for salads like fruit or pasta and desserts. Need to feed up to 200 people, but your dish does not have to feed that many. TEAM AND BRACE/PAIRS CLASSES being offered. Get your teams together! There are many opportunities for you to compete with a team. There is the traditional Obedience Team competition, Costumes encouraged! If your dog is not ready for the Obedience team consider getting a Rally team together. There will be two team classes. Rally Novice Team – for dogs that do not have a RE or UD. Rally Advanced Team for any level dog. If you are not familiar with Rally teams it is a lot of fun. There are four team members with one alternate if needed. You walk the course just like the regular classes. Then you go in one at a time. Your time starts as soon as your first team member starts, then the time ends when your 4 th team member crosses the finish line. The four team members’ scores are added together with the time. For Rally teams you do not need four handlers, but you do need four different dogs. Remember your times run together so if you handle all four dogs you might have a slower time. Obedience Brace and Rally Pairs – one Handler with two dogs, Obedience is the Novice routine, Rally will be the Rally Novice Class. Again if you have two dogs (any level) that can do Rally try Rally Pairs. It is gr eat fun to watch and to par ticipate. Photo booth will be set up in the building for you to take pictur es, with Cowboy hats, hay, saddle and more. Raffle – Special raffle in the Obedience/Rally Building on Tuesday only. Related items still needed. The Quilt – Don’t forget about you chance to win the Golden Retriever “A Dog for All Reasons” Quilt. I have people from all over the country buying tickets but very few club members have sent in any ticket forms. The money goes to the National and the Zeke Cancer Fund. Please support this. Turn in your tickets now! The Quilt is looking pretty good at my houseJ Drawing during Best of Breed, Quilt can be shipped. http:// www.2016national.com/quilt-raffle/ Sponsor a Trophy only a few mor e Obedience/Rally Trophies left for Sponsorship, please help out! Dee Dee Anderson [email protected] or Patti Kostakis [email protected] Volunteers Needed for 2016 National I am recruiting volunteers to help out at the National. Please let me know the days that you will be in Placerville and the days that you could help out. Areas of needs are: Raffle, Hospitality, Merchandise sales and Conformation ring help. There will be plenty of time to do what you need to do and also help the club to have a very special and successful GRCA National Specialty. There will be Golden lovers from all over coming to Placerville this October. I hope you are all looking forward to meeting folks as much as I am . Lets give them a big California Welcome and make sure everyone has a good time. If you are a committee chair and need help please let me know! Please email or phone me the days that you will be there and the days that you have time to spare. Please include a cell number. I promise you will not be overworked and will be rewarded! Thank you to all for helping NorCal make this National one of the best! Dimity Mueller 408 315-4417 [email protected] CCA at the National Putting on a National Specialty takes our entire Golden village, and the CCA (Certificate of Conformation Assessment) event is no exception! This year we will have a double CCA (details and entry form forthcoming in the premium list coming out soon). We will have six evaluators and 42 dogs, with two "flights" held simultaneously on Thursday, October 6 from 8-4. As chair of the event I am seeking volunteers to help with stewarding, stacking and moving dogs, and assisting the two secretaries on the day of the event. We will train and lunch will be provided. Even if you can only work half day, or have a a dog entered , your help would be very much appreciated. And if you've never attended a CCA, this is a highly educational event, and everyone who has helped in the past has enjoyed it and learned from it. To volunteer, please contact Suzanne Bria at [email protected] or 510-919-6284. Many thanks! Designated Specialty at Harvest Moon Classic NORCAL GRC will be holding a designated specialty in conjunction with Skyline Dog Fanciers during the Friday show in October. Jennifer Masterson will be the chair and contact person. Since we are hosting the GRCA National in early October, we are not holding our annual independent specialty on Thursday of the Harvest Moon Classic. For the designated specialty, sweepstakes will be judged by Kym Anton (WA). There will be a small raffle. GRCA National merchandise may also be available. Come on out and join us! NORCAL GRC PHEASANT FLYER DAY Saturday, September 17, 2016 8 am - 3pm CRTA Training Grounds, GRIZZLY RANCH 4179 Van Sickle Rd. Suisun City 94585 Open to all Goldens Entered in the Field Events At the National Specialty NATIONAL TREASURE NORCAL GRC’s very own Sue Carpenter is a true gem. In between baking (Sue donated the bulk of cookies for the Woofstock Bake Sale), showing her puppy, she also has been working on a ONE OF A KIND quilt as a fundraiser for the GRCA National 2016. We just got word that the custom photo top has been completed. Included are fifteen covers of the GRCA, depicting all venues of our wonderful breed. It is approximately 58” x 87” and is bordered all around with what is called “flying geese.” It has now been sent to Boston to a professional quilter, who will finalize the project. This is a personal endeavor for Sue, who on another project using her own pattern and subsequent creation for CureJM raised $5000. Given the larger audience at the National, we hope that the custom quilt will bring in much more! We look forward to debuting the quilt and thank Susan for all of her efforts and talents. Let Them Eat Cake...or Pie! Kudos and a huge thank you to Laurie Jordan-Fenner and crew for an amazing fundraising effort at Woofstock in June. The bake sale raised over $1000 in one short day. Special thanks to everyone who contributed homemade baked items as well as volunteered to be at the booth (especially Laura Franchi, who was there all day). On a side note, Elizabeth Jordan Nelson’s incredible pies sold for HUNDREDS of dollars in a special auction. Hidden talents abound! And on April 3rd at the Marin Retriever Club hunt test, Shasta earned her 5th Master leg for her MH title. Without Katie and Tom Quarles excellent, detailed training, especially on the line, we'd not have earned the qualifying Master legs.
