May 16 - 17, 2014
THIS PURPOSE OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TO BRING RESEARCHERS, EDUCATORS AND LAY PERSONS TOGETHER, TO
EXPLORE THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION AND ADVANCEMENTS IN THE AREA RELATED TO R ADIO ASTRONOMY
REGISTRATION STARTS JANUARY 17TH
Dr. Condon graduated from Cornell University, with a degree in Physics.
While at Cornell (Grad Student in Radio Astronomy), he studied under Dr. Frank Drake.
In his early days, he was fascinated with rockets and space travel. In his own
words - as far back as I can I remember, when I listened to Space Patrol every
Saturday and ate Wheat Chex to get Space Patrol premiums. My interest in radio
began when my family moved to St. Joseph, MI, only a short bike ride from the
Heath Company in Benton Harbor. I built their crystal radio, obtained a ham
license (KN8LHP), and built their DX40 novice transmitter. Science fiction
stories and the Sputnik launch in 1957 fed both interests.
Dr. Condon’s career took him to Arecibo, PR in the late 1960s to observe with the
1000-foot telescope. 1972 to 1974 he was postdoc in NRAO, Charlottesville, VA. In addition, he taught
astronomy at the Virginia Tech physics department for four years, spent a year as an Alfred P. Sloan
foundation fellow, and returned to the permanent scientific staff of the NRAO, where he remained since
1979. Dr. Condon’s main research field is extragalactic radio astronomy. In his own words - I used radio
emission to study star formation in galaxies, led several radio sky surveys [including the Green Bank 6 cm
survey that broke the 300 foot telescope, the widely used NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), and the recent JVLA
survey that resolved 90% the radio source background into sources as faint as 1 micro Jy], and initiated the
Maser Cosmology Project (MCP) that images 22 GHz water masers in Seyfert galaxies to determine their
distances, measure the Hubble constant using geometry instead of "standard candelas", and obtain accurate
masses of their supermassive black holes. Jim also teaches astronomy (professor) at the University of
Virginia, "Essential Radio Astronomy" to graduate students in the astronomy department
