(Information in parenthesis is not part of the spelling dictation.) 1. Ask yourself, "What sounds do I hear when I say this word very slowly?" (Upper grade students use this strategy mostly with words that have more than one syllable, especially compound words or words with known prefixes and suffixes.) 2. Think, "What other words do I know that can help me spell this word?" (For example, if you know how to spell paw, you would also spell straw or dawn.) 3. Use a memory aid by asking yourself, "How can I remember how this word is spelled?" (For example, hear - I can hear with my ear, or friend – I am her friend to the end.) 4. Write the word and say, "Does this word look right?" (If it doesn't, try it again.) 5. As you read through a piece of writing you have completed, you may want to underline any words you think are not spelled correctly so that you can check them. I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud by William Wordsworth (First two stanzas) I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way. They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. Poem of the Week – Please write this in your poetry journal at school.
