Make the foremast and mainmast, starting with their 8mmdiameter lower parts 331 and 340. In both 331 and 340, fit
the jaws 332, the cheeks 333, the tops 334, the ends of the bases
on the mainmast 335, the lugs 336, the caps 338, the small rings
108, the large eyebolts 109 and the 4mm blocks 343. In the parts
of the mainmasts 337 and 342, make 1mm-diameter holes, and in
the lower mainmast 340 fit the seven eyebolts 109 to the brass
stay 341. In the two circular pin-rails 339, drill the six 1mmdiameter holes in which to fit the metal belay pins 103 and insert
these into the lowermast of the foresail 331 and of the mainsail
340. Paint the masts ivory, as shown in the photographs.
We recommend that you follow the mast, rigging and sail plans
when building these parts.

Continue making the foremast and
mainmast, with their respective 4mmdiameter topgallant masts 347 and 350 and
fitting the crosstrees 344, the tops of the bases
of the topgallants 345, the small topmast caps
346, the 3mm blocks 348, the 4mm blocks 343,
the topgallant strengtheners 349, the mast tops
351, the rings 108 and the eyebolts 109. In the
topmasts 337 and 342 and in the topgallants
347 and 350, make 1mm-diameter holes. Once
both masts are completed, paint them ivory, as
shown in the photographs. Building the
mizzenmast, as shown in the two small photos
(left), is explained in the following step.
Consult the mast plans to carry out all of these
operations.

Make the mizzenmast, starting with the 6mmdiameter lower piece 352 and the 5mm-diameter
topmast 358. Fit the jaws 353, the cheeks 333, the top
354, the stay 355, the top 335, the lug 336, the cap 357,
the crosstree 359, the top 345, the cap 360, the mizzen
topgallant 361, the rings 108, the eyebolts 109, the
blocks 343, 348 and the mast top 351. Make the 1mmdiameter holes in the mizzenmast and in the circular pinrail 356 and fit the six belay pins 103. Paint the
mizzenmast ivory, the same as the previous ones.
Fit and glue the three masts into their respective holes so
that they are perfectly aligned (red lines) and slightly
angled at about 87 degrees towards the stern. Make the
fastening for the rudder blade with the chain 151, the
eyebolts 93, the ring 108 and the hinge 362.
Always refer to the mast plans when undertaking these
operations.

bowsprit 363 and the boom 364, make 1mm-diameter holes and paint
the entire unit ivory, as shown in the photographs. With the chain 375,
make the rings 108 and the bow stanchions 376. Make the boom
bobstays (red arrows). With the brass wire 375, make the rings 108 and
with the black 0.15mm-diameter thread 377 make the bowsprit shrouds
(green arrows). With the medium brown 0.5mm-diameter thread 378
make the foresail guys (yellow arrows).

Tie the thick black cotton thread 379
and the fine raw thread 308 to the large
clump blocks 99, as shown in the photo, and
paint the fine raw thread white. From the
chainwales, make lanyards between the clump
blocks 99, using the fine raw thread 308.
Stretch the lower rigging of thick black cotton
thread 379 and fix it to where the mainmast
and foremast join the tops 334. On the lower
part of the rigging, on both the foremast and
mainmast, fit the wooden ratlines 380 and paint
them white. With the black cotton thread 381,
make the ratlines, tying them from one rigging
to the other, approximately 6mm apart to
make the steps. Tie the first four ratlines to
four riggings and when reaching the fifth ratline,
tie the thread to all five of the riggings (red
arrow); the following four ratlines are to be
tied to four of the riggings and so on.

Tie the small clump blocks 100 to the second ratlines with the fine
raw thread 308. In the mizzenmast rigging pin-rails 382, make five
sockets in which to fit the rigging and, between them, 1.2mm-diameter
holes in which to fit the belay pins 103. Cover the gaps with the batten
383 and paint the entire unit white. Rig the lower clump blocks 100 with
the medium black cotton thread 384 and insert them into the tops to the
mainmast futtocks. Join the lower to the upper clump blocks by means of
the lanyards made with the fine raw thread 308 and make the mainmast
rigging with the medium black cotton thread 384, from the upper clump
blocks to over the crosstrees. Tie the ratlines with the fine black cotton
thread 381 and paint the first of these white (green arrow). Make the
topgallant ladders by rigging the lower clump blocks 100 with the medium
black cotton thread 384 and inserting them through the holes in the
crosstrees to form the futtocks on the topgallants. Join both clump blocks
in the same manner as the mainmast ladders and make the small rigging
with the thread 384, tying the ratlines with the thread 381.
Consult the rigging plans while followng the step-by-step instructions.
49 THE CUTTY SARK: STEP BY STEP
49
Rig the mizzenmast stay (yellow arrows) with the
thick brown thread 385, tying it on its upper part
to the main and mizzen mainmast with the fine raw
thread 308 (to be painted white) and on the lower part,
making a lanyard with thread 308 and a brass bracket
386 glued to the edge of the circular pin-rail 339 and
tied to the lanyard with a ring 108. Rig the mizzen
topmast (red arrows) with the thick brown thread 385,
tying it on its upper part to the mainmast and mizzen
topgallant with the raw thread 308 (to be painted
white), threading it through a clump block 100 fitted on
the lower mainmast where a 1.5mm-diameter hole is to
be made. Tie it off on a lanyard made with thread 308
to which, in turn, it will be tied to the eyebolt 109. Rig
the staysail stays (blue arrows) and the mizzen royal
staysail stays (green arrows) with the brown thread
378, tying them on their upper part to the mizzen small
mast with the raw thread 308, threading through the
holes in the mainmast cap 338 and 346, tying them off
in the lanyards 308 and, in turn, in the eyebolts 109
located behind the mainmast. (See next page to

109 located on the deck with the rings 108. Rig the two topsail yards (red arrows) with the thick brown thread 385, tying them on their upper part to
the main and topgallant mast of the mainmast with the fine raw thread 308 (to be painted white) and, on its lower part, making two lanyards with the
thread 308 and tying them to the eyebolts 109, located on the deck with the rings 108. Make the royal staysail stays (blue arrows), the main royal stays
on the mainmast (green arrows) and the moonsail (violet arrows). With the brown threads 378 and 153, tie them on their upper part to the topgallant
with the fine raw thread 308 (to be painted white), threading them through the holes for the foresail caps 338 and 346 and through a clump block 100
fitted on the mainmast foretop where a 1.5mm-diameter hole is made, tying off on the lanyards 308 and, in turn, in the eyebolts 109 located behind the
foresail yard. (See next page to complete this operation.)

same thread 308, tying them to the eyebolts 109,
located on the deck, with the rings 108. With the
brown thread 385, make the stay from the foresail
topgallant (red arrows), tying it on its upper part to the
mainmast and topgallant of the foresail, and on its lower
part tying the fine raw thread 308 to the assembly
made from parts 109, 299 and 303. Rig the two inner
jibs (blue arrows) with the thick brown thread 385 and
run them through the pulleys 369 of the bowsprit and
end by tying them off on the countertimbers 69 with
the help of the rings 152. Rig the headsail stays and the
bow fore topgallant stays (green arrows) and the flying
jib and bow royal stays (violet arrows) with the brown
thread 378 and 153, threading them through the holes
of the boom and through the dolphin boom 367, tying
