Read the passage. Then answer the questions. You’ll agree that in a democracy all citizens should have the right to vote. But for years, only white males could vote in the United States. This has changed, as you know. We owe thanks for this in large part to the tireless work of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They were two of the leaders of the women’s movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Anthony and Stanton worked to get equal rights for women. They gave speeches and wrote articles. But fairness for women in jobs, in pay, and in property disputes did not come easily. It was an uphill battle. Getting women the right to vote was a big part of that fight. Both Anthony and Stanton kept up the struggle. Neither lived to see women finally go to the polls. But that day wouldn’t have come without them and those who followed their lead.
