Welcome to the Fairy Tale Challenge! I have created this badge in

Welcome to the Fairy Tale Challenge! I have created this badge in order to fundraise for my trip
to King Jesus Charity Home in Ghana in summer 2014 with Girlguiding Newcastle. We are going to
the orphanage to teach the children and hopefully learn some things ourselves and it will be an
amazing experience!
To earn this badge as a minimum you must complete:
Rainbows – 5 challenges
Brownies – 8 challenges
Guides/Senior Section/Adults – 11 challenges (with at least one from each section)
I have included some helpful resources and web links for some challenges to give you a helping
hand if you need it but also feel free to adapt the suggested activities to suit your girls or your
meeting place.
The badges will cost £1.50 each plus P&P for the total number.
There is an order form at the end of this pack.
Any questions or if you just fancy letting me know how you get on, you can email me:
[email protected]
Enjoy!

If you were locked in a tower and you could only take three items with you what would you take?
In the story, Rapunzel is locked in a really tall tower. Do the “Tallest” quiz.
Rapunzel is only saved when a prince hears her beautiful singing. Have a good sing song!
To save Rapunzel the prince climbs up her really long hair - have a pamper evening and do each
other’s hair and nails!
Cinderella got her name as she had to sleep in the fireplace by the cinders of the fire. Make an
edible campfire!
Cinderella is bullied by her stepsisters and made to feel ugly and worthless. Nowadays the media
and society can put pressure on girls to look a certain way. Discuss beauty and self confidence.
Cinderella gets to attend a ball at the palace - design your ideal party dress/shoes
When leaving the ball Cinderella loses a glass slipper - play match the shoe.
At the beginning of the fairy tale Snow White gets lost in the woods. Go for a penny hike in your
local area, every time you get to a junction you flip a penny, heads is left, tails is right!
If you were one of the dwarves from Snow White which one would you be and why?

The wolf certainly had a lot of puff but not enough to blow down the third pig’s house! See who
can huff and puff a malteser the furthest along the floor in one breath using a straw.
The three little pigs must’ve had to pass the time while they were hiding from the wolf, maybe
they did a wordsearch?
Goldilocks goes into the cottage and tastes every bowl of porridge that the Three Bears have just
made. Have a go at making porridge!
The most famous phrase from this fairy tale is “just right”. Taste different flavours of porridge
and decide which is “just right”
The Three Bears are a close family, why not play their game?
Goldilocks was only a little girl and I think she would have liked colouring in! Try her colouring
picture.

Little Red Riding Hood colouring picture

and craft materials.
It all started with some beans… Play the bean game
Jack loved to climb. Do the maze and get Jack to the top of the cloud!
Fe fi fo fum, there’s a giant in Jack and the Beanstalk! Make and do an obstacle course involving
stilts!
Jack and the Beanstalk is a pretty dramatic story! Work in small groups to act out what might’ve
happened if Jack didn’t climb up the beanstalk.
Sleeping Beauty slept for 100 years, how long can you sleep for in sleeping lions?
Sleeping Beauty pricked her finger on a spinning wheel that was being used to spin wool. Have a
go at making a pom pom with wool and if you’re feeling really creative, you could make it into a
creature!
The fairies gave Sleeping Beauty gifts at her christening – beauty, wit, grace, the ability to dance,
the gift of song and the gift of music. Discuss human rights – what are the rights of children born
today?
How did Sleeping Beauty get her name? Because she got her beauty sleep! Find out about the
importance of getting enough sleep and the benefits – have a go at facemasks.

Songs
Here are some song suggestions to get you started! You could also speak to your county music
advisor or arrange for some Rangers/Trefoil Guild members to come in and teach you some
songs!
There was a Crazy Moose
Thunderation
Animal Fair
Campfire’s Burning
The Bumblebee Song
The Meatball Song
Johnny was a Paratrooper
40 Years on an Iceberg
Alice the Camel
My Ship Sailed from China
Cecil the Caterpillar
I’m a little piece of tin
Edible campfire
To make your edible campfire you will need:
Digestive biscuits
Matchmakers or similar
Flake
Strawberry laces
White icing
(Writing icing)
You will use your digestive biscuit at the base to build the campfire on. Matchmakers form the
larger logs at the bottom of the fire (use white icing to stick them on). Strawberry laces are
excellent for making the actual fire and writing icing is also good to stick the laces on and for
extra colour! If you crumble a flake and then sprinkle bits over your campfire it looks excellent as
little twigs.
Beauty and self confidence
Points to start/aid discussion:
Dictionary definition of beauty – “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense
pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as
shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in
which high spiritual qualities are manifest)”
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” Agree or disagree?
Is self confidence the same as beauty?
Can think yourself into being confident?
Look at the 10 points to improve self confidence on this website. Do you agree? Can you think of
better strategies? http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/10-ways-to-instantly-build-self-confidence/
Girlguiding website has some good resources for this sort of discussion on the Members area,
including the real role models video:
https://www.girlguiding.org.uk/our_research/real_role_models.aspx
Shoe Game
In order to play you need to sit your girls on their knees in one straight line, shoulder to shoulder.
One person is on and leaves the room. One girl left in the line has to take one shoe off and put it
in the middle of the room and return to her space. The person who is on returns and has three
tries to guess whose shoe it is.
N.B. The game doesn’t work if the girl who’s on can see the feet of anyone in the line!
Dress Design Simple outlines for girls to modify and decorate if desired.
Magic mirror
Print this outline onto card or allow girls to draw their own. Decorate with glitter and sparkle and
use aluminium foil for the looking glass part.

Three Bears game
The girls need to be in threes – one is Daddy bear, one is Mummy bear and one is Baby bear. They
stand in a circle in their threes (they need to be in the same order e.g Daddy, Mummy, Baby,
Daddy…). When their name is called they must run around the outside of the circle and back to
their family who will have made an arch for them to run through. The last family to be completed
is out.

Smartie game
This is good as an introduction game. Get each girl to pick one smartie. Each colour represents a
fact about themselves that they have to tell the rest of the group.
Brown – your favourite TV programme
Green – your favourite animal
Orange – your favourite ice cream flavour
Pink – your favourite colour
Purple – your favourite place
Red – your favourite story
Yellow – your favourite season
Blue – your favourite thing to wear

Keep to the path game
Place pieces of newspaper in a trail on the floor. The girls have to follow the trail staying on the
newspaper. A leader turns their back and anyone not on the newspaper when they turn round is
out! Remove pieces of newspaper each time to make it harder.
N.B. Same idea as Islands!
Bean game
The leader shouts out different types of bean and there is an action to go with each one. Last one
to do it is out!
Runner beans – run on the spot
Broad beans – make yourself as wide as possible
String beans – make yourself tall and thin
French beans – all say “ooh la la!”
Baked beans – curl up in a ball on the floor
Black eyed beans – cover one eye
Kidney beans – hands on hips

Pompoms
Cut two doughnut shaped pieces of card and hold them together. Get a long piece of wool and
begin to wrap it around the card. Your pompom will look best if you get your woolly loops close
together. Once you have wound your wool all the way round your doughnut you need to get
some scissors and carefully cut through the wool between the layers. You should end up with a
pompom!
