We recall the day the Holy Spirit first descended upon the Apostles, and they we given the inspiration and grace to continue Jesus’ mission here on Earth. As we heard in the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles, after the Holy Spirit descended upon them, they began to boldly proclaim God’s message to the people in multiple languages. We all receive this same Holy Spirit in Baptism and Confirmation, and we can also do amazing things, if we’re open to the Spirit. It doesn’t necessarily mean that we’ll be able to speak multiple languages, but we will be able to speak about God in ways that will make sense to others. Sometimes we don’t trust God as much as we should, and we need to be reminded that the gifts of the Holy Spirit will enable us to do what God needs us to do. Our Lord has chosen us and sent us into the world to spread the Good News, and he gave us the Holy Spirit to help us in our mission. Lori Snouffer and Toni Zinn SERVERS 5:00pm Gabe Collison, Leiden Rounds and Chad and Wren Turner 9:00am Braxton Barr, Joseph Butcher and Faith and Joseph Deno 11:00am Haley, Joshua and Melissa Pavon and Jennifer Cruz-Pavon We heard in the Second Reading that the Holy Spirit gives each of us gifts for some benefit. But we need to remember that the benefit is not for us – it’s for those we ‘re called to serve. And service to others is one of the most important aspects of discipleship. But it’s not service as we want it to be, it’s service as God needs it to be. We don’t necessarily receive the gifts we’d prefer to receive, nor do we always get to use them how and where we’d like to. If we’re really going to take discipleship seriously, then we need to open to doing everything the way God needs us to do it. And we also need to remember that we’re never the focus – it’s always about the Church and how we’re called to serve within it. HOSPITALITY 5:00pm Sharon Coverstone and Kathy Lawley 9:00am Yvonne Boothe and Jolene Loescher 11:00am Carolyn Brouillette and Cathy Fockele USHERS 5:00pm Turner James Coverstone, Greg Kernion and Ed 9:00am Thomas Canning and Kenny Steppe 11:00am Gregory Bavonese and Albert Tatton SACRISTANS 5:00pm Having been here at Sacred Heart Church for almost ten years, it’s difficult to think about moving to a new parish. I’ve loved being your Pastor, but the reality is that I’m now being called to serve God in a new way. Change is hard for all of us, but the knowledge that God’s really the one in charge makes the transition easier. We all like some sense of control in our lives and in the world, but the danger is that we can become too focused on what we want, and forget about what God wants. We all need to be more open to what the Holy Spirit is calling us to do, and where he’s calling us to do it. I’ve told you often that discernment of God’s will can be difficult at times, but there’s a great peace that comes from doing what God calls you to do. I know that the Church is always being led by the Holy Spirit, and following where we’re led helps us all to be who God calls us to be.
