Our December caravan to the Wagon Wheels with Wayne Easton and Lorraine Rouse was a fun evening. It was their raffle dance and Marilyn did not win anything but some of the group did very well. Jean Huffman won her third in a row split the pot and can now pay any fines the sheriffs deem to reward her with. The after party at Andy and Tricia's house was a lot of fun. We were able to see their new house and peek into their kids apartment in the house and not get caught. We had a white elephant gift exchange but some of the gifts were not white elephants. The Seahawk wrapping paper and the fancy towels got stolen a few times. Had a surprise guest at the after Thanks, Terry & Marilyn 3 of our potential members work at Boeing and maybe the name should be mathematical. Bert Glazier, the first designated caller from the club said he was a brick mason and the name should be sturdy and strong. Al DeWinter who later became the caller said that maybe “The Boeing Jet Steppers” would be a great name. It was decided the name was too long and they work at Boeing and did not need the name in what they wanted to do for recreation. “Wagon Wheels” was a name brought up but someone said this was the Jet age and did not want to be associated with anything being pulled by a horse. “Boots & Laces” one person said but again someone said no as he had worn too many old boots in his life to be named after them. Another suggested he did not want anything to do with Laces and the only ones he had seen of them was in places he was not supposed to be. Finally one-person maybe Jim Knight who was not in the group at the time said how about “Hoot n Hollers”. This suggestion was also turned down as someone said they did not want to be known as the club that just makes a lot of noise. Much later after Jim did join the club he was fined many times for bring up that name again and again. Jim does not give up easily. Something mathematical, round or square, catchy, that would last and that could be remembered was what they needed. Area of a circle is PI-r squared. This is good but pies are round. Squares are square but if looked from the sky a square of dancers look round. Round would be good but who wants to be called round and round dancing had not been invented yet I believe. The only name that made sense was PIR Squares. This would be a name they all could be proud of and most of them could spell. The name would most likely be changed some time in the future. And that my friend is “What is in a NAME by one man’s theory”??? Any other ideas on how the name was decided on would be appreciated and might get published. Sunshine News Writing this from Estes Park, CO, high in the Rockies and snowing; sure looks like many Christmas cards! Prayers to all those who are ailing this joyous season; may you be blest with healing. Best wishes to all for a happy holiday season, filled with merriment, and with the love of family and friends. To a wonderful New Year filled with fun dances. Cheers to all, Sunshine Lady, Patricia What is in a NAME by one man’s theory??? The PI-R Squares were started in 1950 by some group of people that started something bigger than they thought at the time. Here is one man’s theory on how the club got its NAME. In the 50’s there were no little boxes that were hitched to the end of their arms that one could ask questions and get an answer. No Sire was available so they HAD to have a meeting to come up with a name. This is what might have happened at the meeting. Joe Rantz, the first caller was in charge of the meeting. Joe said the name should mean something to all of the members. Joe had a lot of experience being abandoned by his parent figures two times and working hard and not getting much except a gold metal in the Olympics that he could not sell for anything. Joe said many 4
