KIRKIN` OF THE TARTAN - First Presbyterian Church

MAY 25, 2014
The Cross of St. Andrew,
Patron Saint of Scotland
KIRKIN’ OF THE TARTAN
The story of the Kirkin’ of the Tartan is a modern one. “Kirk” is a Scottish word
meaning church, and in Scotland the kirk refers to the (Presbyterian) Church of
Scotland. The Kirkin’ uses some order from a Scottish church service, but is an
American invention and was first held on April 27, 1941, by the late Dr. Peter
Marshall, Scottish-born Chaplain of the U.S. Senate and minister of the New York
Avenue Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C. After Dr. Marshall’s death the
Kirkin’ moved from place to place and in 1954 was held at the Washington
National Cathedral, where it has been held ever since, and is sponsored by the St.
Andrew’s Society.
With the recent increase in Scottish Clan activities, the Kirkin’ of the Tartan has
spread across the United States and Canada. The Kirkin’ today at First
Presbyterian Church is being held with approval by the Session and ministers.
The display of the tartans represents the Scottish Clans. The word Clan, meaning
family and identity, came to be attached to the Chief of the Clan. The
Parliamentary Act of 1746, following the rout in 1745 of the Jacobites and the
departure of Bonnie Prince Charles, banned the kilt, plaid or any tartan garment.
The bagpipes were banned as well, and effort was made to destroy Highland Clan
identity. This was all part of the dispersal of the Clans and the breakup of the
Clan system.
In 1822 King George IV visited Edinburgh and called all the Clan Chiefs to appear
in Highland dress, and the king himself wore the kilt. Great scurrying was done
to locate what tartan each chief should wear. The old sets having been lost and
forgotten, new ones were developed in a hurry for the royal event.
June 9th is St. Columba’s Day. It was Columba who first brought the Christian
faith to Scotland in 563. It was John Knox who brought the Christian Reformation
to Scotland in 1547 from John Calvin in Geneva, Switzerland, and exclaimed from
the depth of his evangelical zeal, “Give me Scotland, or I die.”

Clap your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with loud songs of joy.
For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome,
a great King over all the earth.
God has gone up with a shout,
the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
sing praises to our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth;
sing praises with a Psalm.
(Psalm 47)
Psalm 100
OLD HUNDREDTH
All people that on earth do dwell,
sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, His praise forth tell,
come ye before Him, and rejoice.
All:
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed,
without our aid He did us make;
we are His folk, He doth us feed,
and for His sheep He doth us take.
Choir:
O enter then His gates with praise,
approach with joy His courts unto;
praise, laud, and bless His name alway,
for it is seemly so to do.
All:
For why? The Lord our God is good:
His mercy is forever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
and shall from age to age endure.
All:
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
the God whom heaven and earth adore,
from men and from the angel host
be praise and glory evermore. Amen.

CONFESSION
OF
Almighty God, we are unworthy to come into Your presence
because of our many sins. If You dealt with us as we deserve
we would not deserve any grace or mercy from You. We have
sinned against You, O Lord, and we have offended You. And
yet, O Lord, as we acknowledge our sins and offenses, so also
do we acknowledge You to be a merciful God, and loving and
favorable Father to all who turn to You. We humbly ask You,
for the sake of Christ Your Son, to show mercy to us, and
forgive us all our offenses. Forgive the sins of our youth, and
the sins of our old age. By Your Spirit, O God, take possession
of our hearts that, not only the actions of our life, but also the
words of our mouth, and the smallest thought of our minds,
may be guided and governed by You, through Jesus Christ
our Lord, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, be all honor
and glory, now and forever. Amen.

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
Sandra Randleman
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to Whom alone
we must cleave, Whom alone we must serve, Whom alone we
must worship, and in Whom alone we must put our trust; Who
is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible,
omnipotent, invisible; one in substance and yet distinct in
three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; by
Whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth,
visible and invisible.
From Scots Confession, 1560 (Chapter 1)
KIRKIN’
OF THE
TARTAN
On behalf of believers everywhere, we raise these tartans
before Almighty God in appreciation of our heritage
and ask God’s blessing on His servants.

Take This Moment
John L. Bell
Take this moment, sign and space,
take my friends around;
here among us make the place where Your love is found.
Take the time to call my name,
take the time to mend who I am and what I’ve been,
all I’ve failed to tend.
Take the tiredness of my days,
take my past regret,
letting Your forgiveness touch all I can’t forget.
Take the little child in me, scared of growing old.
Help me here to find my worth, made in Christ’s own mold.
Take my talents, take my skill, take what’s yet to be.
Let my life be Yours, and yet, let it still be me.
(11:00)
William Mathias
Let the People Praise Thee, O God
Let the people praise Thee, O God.
O let the nations rejoice and be glad,
for Thou shalt judge the folk righteously
and govern the nations upon earth.
Then shall the earth bring forth her increase,
and God, even our own God, shall give us His blessing.
God shall bless us, and all the ends of the world shall fear Him.
God be merciful unto us and bless us,
and show us the light of His countenance and be merciful unto us.
That Thy way may be known upon earth,
Thy saving health among all nations.
(Psalm 67)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end, Amen.

BSA; Helen K. Holland; Nan N. Russell; Jane A. Skelly and Elizabeth A.
Vorhaus.
A CONGREGATIONAL MEETING has been called for today, Sunday, May 25,

she can accept a call to Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Atlanta,
Georgia.

KIRKIN OF THE TARTAN, TODAY — At both the 8:30 A.M. and 11:00
worship services, a grand procession will fill the sanctuary
with the pageantry of Scotland, with bagpipes, drums and many
of our FPC families who are of Scottish ancestry. An exhibit of
Scottish dancing will be held in Courtenay Hall following the 8:30 A.M.
service.
A.M.
YOUNG CHILDREN & WORSHIP is a ministry of worship preparation for
young children and their parents. Parents and their children who are age
4 or 5 by September 1, 2013, are invited to participate (this includes
children in the Faith, Hope, Love, and Mercy Sunday School classes). This
ministry is offered during both 8:30 and 11:00 worship services and meets
in Room CW-110, which is located in the Children’s Ministry wing. Please
reference the worship bulletin to know when to exit the sanctuary. We ask
that children who are attending for the first time be accompanied by a
parent. Please visit the church website to enroll your child in YC&W.
Contact Deb O’Brien ([email protected]) with questions.
MOTHER AND INFANT QUIET ROOM — Mothers of infants who need a quiet
place for nursing or calming babies are welcome to use the Quiet Room.
An audio feed of the worship service is provided. Check in with Karen
Fitts in the Nursery to see if the Quiet Room is available for your use.
ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES — Hearing devices, largeprint hymnals, large-print bulletins, and large-print Bibles are available
for worship and are located in the narthex on the table on the right side
as you enter the front doors. If anyone has a need or disability requiring
assistance or accommodation for any church activity, please contact the
church office (383-1815).
A/V OF WORSHIP AVAILABLE — Worship service in Courtenay Hall has the
audio-video transfer for each of the Sunday morning worship services. It
is a smaller but still spacious area to worship that is wheelchair
accessible, has low sensory stimulation and allows for more movement. If
that atmosphere aids in your ability to worship, feel free to enjoy the
service in Courtenay Hall.
OFFICER PRAYER TIME — Prayer requests for our congregation can be
submitted to the church officers by filling out prayer request cards and
depositing them in the Prayer Request Boxes, located in the narthex on
the southeast wall and at the Welcome Center. Prayer request cards can
be found in a rack attached to the Prayer Request Box. Officers meet each
Wednesday at 4:30 P.M. in the Bryant Conference Room to lift up prayer
requests to God.
A CHOIR FOR ALL OF US — Once again, the FPC Music ministry is
forming the Parish Choir. The Parish Choir is open to all adults and
teenagers. We welcome singers who do not necessarily have the time to
commit to the normal rehearsal schedule of the Sanctuary Choir, but who
do enjoy occasionally participating in music leadership at First
Presbyterian. A wide range of music will be sung, and no audition is
necessary. The only requirement is to be present at the rehearsal one hour
prior to the service for which the Parish Choir is singing. This choir does
not vest nor process. We are offering the dates of June 15 or August 17 —
we’d love to have you join us for either or both times this summer.
Rehearsals will begin at 10:00 A.M. in the FPC choir room. Please contact
Raphael Bundage or Daphne Garey (298-9517 or [email protected])
for more details.
SERMONS preached at First Presbyterian Church are published weekly.
You can log on to the church website (www.fpcnashville.org) to listen to an
audio version or read a printed version of the sermon. Printed copies of the
sermon can also be found in literature areas of the church (in the narthex
and Welcome Center).
