DID YOU
KNOW ?
Exercise and sports are not only fun, but they are
also good for your body, mind and overall wellbeing. Here are some things you should know
about sports and exercise in general
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

•
Playing any form of sport and doing exercise will help you sleep better
In one game of football, it is common for midfielders to run approximately 9km
Sports helps develop teamwork and leadership skills. You learn that you have to work together as a team to win the game
Gymnasts use chalk to improve their grip, absorb sweat and keep their hands dry
With regular exercise you get sick less often
Kite flying is a professional sport in Thailand
Working out will improve your memory
Football is the most attended and watched sport
in the world
Dancing is a terrific and fun form of exercise
Physical activity helps you
What’s Christmas without a gift, huh?
strengthen your bones and muscles
So here’s me….

Get moving… ..
Exercise is wise
Exercise for grown-ups means working out in the gym, running on a treadmill or lifting
weights. But for you children, exercise means playing and being physically active. You
exercise all the time without even thinking of it such as when you run around during your
lunch breaks or at dance class or football practice. When you exercise, you are helping your
body to be stronger and be able to move around and do all the stuff you need it to do.
Try to be active every day and your body will thank you!
Exercise makes your
heart happy
You may know that your heart is a muscle. It works hard,
pumping blood every second of your life. You can help this
important muscle get stronger by doing aerobic exercises.
What are aerobic exercises? Aerobic means "with air", so
aerobic exercise is a kind of activity that requires oxygen.
When you breathe, you take in oxygen, and, if you're doing
aerobic exercise, you may notice you're breathing faster
than normal. Aerobic activity can get your heart pumping,
make you sweaty and quicken your breathing. When you
give your heart this kind of workout on a regular basis,
your heart will get even better at its main job, that is
delivering oxygen to all parts of your body. So, do you want
to do some aerobic exercise? Try swimming, basketball or
jogging. And don't forget that skipping and playing catch
are aerobic activities, too!
4
Exercise makes you feel good
It feels good to have a strong, flexible body
that can do all the activities you enjoy − like
running, jumping and playing with
your friends. But you may not know that
exercising can actually put you in a better
mood. When you exercise, your brain
releases chemicals which may make you
feel happier. It's just another reason why
exercise should be a part of your daily life!
Exercise strengthens muscles
Exercise keeps the balance
Food gives your body fuel in the form of
calories. A calorie is a unit of energy. When
you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a
way of describing how much energy your body
could get from eating or drinking. Your body
needs a certain amount of calories every day
just to function, breathe, walk and do all the
basic stuff. But if you're active, your body may
need extra calories. If you're not very active,
your body won't need as many calories.
Whatever your calorie need is, if you eat
enough to meet that need, your body weight
will stay about the same. If you eat more
calories than your body needs, it may be
stored as excess fat.
Another kind of exercise can help make your
muscles stronger. Did you ever do a pushup or swing across the monkey bars at the
playground? Those are exercises that can build
strength. By using your muscles to do powerful
things, you can make them stronger.
Here are some exercises and activities to build
strong muscles:
• push-ups
• tug-of-war
• running
• bike riding
Exercise makes you flexible
Can you touch your toes? At your age you are
pretty flexible, which means that you can bend
and stretch your bodies without much trouble.
This kind of exercise often feels really good,
like when you take a big stretch in the morning
after waking up. Being flexible means you
can move your arms and legs freely without
feeling any pain. It's easy to find things to do
for good flexibility:
• gymnastics
• dancing, especially ballet
• martial arts
• simple stretches, such as touching your toes

ask
ronald
Luke Camilleri from Marsascala sent this question related to
exercise: How many types of exercise are there?
There are two types of exercise - aerobic and anaerobic. When
you do an aerobic exercise, such as walking, running, swimming,
jumping rope, playing football, dancing or cycling you increase
your heart rate and the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the muscles.
Aerobic exercise builds endurance and burns fat and calories.
On the other hand, when you do an anaerobic exercise, such as
weight-lifting or push-ups, which involve short bursts of energy,
you build strength and muscle.
Maria Sammut from Iklin is asking what is the best age to start
sport training?
Dear Maria, I found this information which I am sure will help you
choose your preference in sport. It is important though, that children
and teens get at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily.
Between the age of 6 and 9, children follow and understand
directions much better. Recommended sports include:
• Gymnastics
• Swimming
• Martial arts
Between the ages of 10 to 12, children have mature vision and the
ability to understand direction and instructions. At this age, you are
ready to take on complex skill sports, such as
• Football
• Basketball
• Tennis
• Volleyball

Let’s meet…
Kylie Mariah Vella, winner of our grand family prize – a weekend
break at the Calypso Hotel, Gozo
Hi! My name is Kylie Mariah Vella. I am 8 years old and I have a younger sister,
Julie, who is 6 years old and a younger brother, Daniel, who is 2. I am from
Mosta and attend St Monica School in Birkirkara where I am in Grade 4 Green. My best friends are Jade, Gabriela, Gulia, Hailey and Charlotte. The latest
craze in our class is to collect stickers from the Animal Kingdom chocolates
and trade them. We also enjoy playing hide & seek and catch.
My favourite sport is free-style dancing. I enjoy going to dancing and drama
lessons and I am also learning to play the piano. In the weekend I enjoy going
to choir practice and singing with the youth choir Shalom during Saturday
mass in the Rotunda Church in Mosta.
I enjoy listening to a lot of modern music and my friends and I enjoy singing
along to the radio on the mini-bus every morning. I like Dark Horse by Katy
Perry, Shake it Off by Taylor Swift and You and I by One Direction.
I would like to share an exciting experience with you. I really enjoy reading
and one of my favourite magazines is McDonald's Big Red Shoes. I took part
in the grand family prize competition featuring in this magazine and I was
extremely lucky to be the winner! I was thrilled that I had won and I could
hardly believe it when my mother told me this fantastic news! I love going to
Gozo and this was the perfect present for my whole family so that we could
start the New Year in an exciting and adventurous way. !

Celebrating Mother’s Day
Our friends play a large role in who we are today and who we will be in the future. But
surely one of the biggest influences in our life, comes from our mother. That is why
every year we have a special day dedicated to our mother!
She listens: No matter how bad of a day she had, she will always be there to listen to what you have to say. She
puts up with our continuous requests - and still manages to keep our home, and everyone in it, in order.
She is always there: Whenever something becomes too much, she is there to calm down the situation
by giving a big hug and telling us it’s going to be OK. No matter what the situation is, mothers are always
there to make their children feel better. And she does this all with a smile - even when we sometimes
forget to say thank you.
She loves unconditionally: A mother’s love for her children is like nothing else in the world and she
encourages and supports us to go after our dreams. She teaches us what is right and what is wrong, and what we
should do when we make a bad decision.
She is our best friend: A mother is the best friend anyone could ever ask for. When everyone else turns away,
she is the one turning towards you, wishing you always the best.
It’s important to have someone like that in your life; it will help you become the best person you can be. Since
our families are there with us from the start, they know everything about us and they’re the ones who truly help
shape our values and personalities.
Your mother has a special place in your heart – let her know how much you
appreciate having her in your life!

Mother’s Day gift ideas
Don't worry too much about what to get your mum for Mother's Day…
big hugs and cuddles will do the trick! But if you still want to make her
something, here are some easy ideas that will surely make your mum
very happy.
Box of Love
This is a very unique gift! What's special about
the box is what's inside - love!
Supplies:
•Small box: a cardboard jewellery box or a gift box
•Poster paint and brushes (if you are going to decorate
the outside)
•Ribbons and decorations
•Printed notes of how much you love your mother
Think of all things that you would like to say to your mother and
print them on small pieces of paper. Cut them out and put in the
box for your mother to read when she opens your box of love.
Fingerprint heart frame
This craft is very easy to do and can be done by a lot of people
together, say your brothers and sisters or all the cousins to give
as a present to your grandma
Supplies
•Piece of cardboard (any colour, any size)
•Watercolours
Make a heart template and draw the shape on the cardboard so that your
work is tidier.
Choose your colour and stamp your finger in the paint. Start filling the
heart with your finger prints. If this painting is being shared with others,
let the colours dry properly between one person and another.
At the bottom, write your names and everyone stamps their fingerprint
next to their name.

EARTH DAY
EVERY DAY
Earth Day was first celebrated on 22 April 1970 and has been an important day ever
since. There are so many issues to think about on Earth Day: endangered animals, energy
consumption, water and air pollution, recycling and reusing. We cannot do everything
ourselves but we can each do some small thing, because it all adds up! Earth Day is
celebrated every year by more than a billion people in 192 countries around the world.
What can YOU do?
Earth Day is usually celebrated with outdoor
activities, where individuals or groups perform
acts of service to Earth. Typical ways of observing
Earth Day include planting trees, using recycled
items and helping your parents to sort the
recycling. You can do the same thing at school or
anywhere else you spend time.
Spread the WORD
The most important part is to be aware and
make others aware of our duties every day
of the year! Everyone has environmental
knowledge they can share with others. Just
talking about the environment with people
who may not think about it that much is a
good way to celebrate Earth Day. Talk to your
parents, friends, teachers, brothers and sisters
about the issues you care about most.
Remember that every day is Earth Day
Don't restrict yourself to just one day a year;
learn about how you can make a difference all the time
14
Take Care of Our Earth
I love the Earth
Everybody go green
Help keep our Earth clean
Stop harming the Earth,
it's where we live
Stop taking from the Earth
and start to give
Stop all the harming
Help make our Earth charming!
I love the Earth
And everything that lives.
I love the plants
And the beauty each one gives.
I love the animals
And the fishes at sea.
For I am a part of Mother Earth
And it's part of me!
