MODEL DESCRIPTION
The PA90 is a triple-reduction, hydraulically driven planetary winch. Anti-friction roller bearings and shaved planetary
gears assure high efficiency and quiet operation. Load “fallback” is prevented by a sprag-type overrunning clutch in
the multi-disc static brake. A roller fairlead is built into the winch case as standard equipment to protect the winch and
extend wire rope life. The single heavy-duty single horizontal roller supplied as standard can be placed in either the
high or low position. An optional fourth roller is available. Routine maintenance is limited to lubricating fairlead rollers,
winch gear oil changes, and regular maintenance of the tractor hydraulic system. There are no mechanical adjustments required on the winch.
The PA90 winch receives hydraulic power from the implement hydraulic system of the D7E. Mounted directly on the
winch are electrically actuated hydraulic valves for the Reel-In, Reel-Out, Drum Clutch Release, and Motor Low-Lock
functions. The electrical winch control signals come from the D7E electronic control system.
All functions of the winch are controlled by a single console mounted Caterpillar three-direction electronic joystick
lever. Two directions of the lever allow the operator to obtain infinitely variable positive winch speed control in both
reel-in and reel-out from less than 2 ft/min (0.6 M/min) to 63 ft/min (19 M/min). Moving the joystick lever in the third
direction will release the drum clutch, which allows the tractor to drive away from the load while maintaining sufficient
tension on the cable to promote proper spooling and minimize dragging on the ground. A small button-style switch on
top of the joystick lever is used to activate the “lock-in-low” function when maximum control precision or continuous
slow speed operation is desired.

PERFORMANCE
The PA90 winch as installed on the Caterpillar D7E dozer is capable of delivering infinitely variable positive
load-speed and load-position control at any combination of Bare-Drum Line-Pull and Bare Drum Line-Speed
shown in the graph below. At higher cable layers, Line-Pull will be proportionally lower and Line-Speed will
be proportionally higher. Contact PACCAR Winch for specific winch performance at higher cable layers.
