with Specialist Sports Status NEWSLETTER – JULY 2012 ISSUE 6 Dear Parents and Guardians, I am please to contribute to this my sixth Brighton Hill Newsletter, the final edition of the year. I cannot believe that I have been Headteacher at Brighton Hill for one year already; we have put in place so many changes since last September and already this feels like a very different institution. You will recall that I came to Brighton Hill as Interim Headteacher in the first instance. The fact that I am now the permanent Headteacher (since April this year) means that we can, together with staff and the IEB, plan with confidence for the next three years and beyond as we transform our school. There have been very many staff changes during the course of this year. In my May 2012 Newsletter I indicated that a full list of both Teaching and Support Staff who have left Brighton Hill during the course of the year, including those leaving at the end of this term, will be provided in this final Newsletter of the year. This list of names, together with the Department in which the member of staff worked, is provided below, followed by a list of new staff who will be joining us in September. School Day Currently, Brighton Hill operates a two tier end of the school day, with a “privileged dismissal” at 2.40 pm and an “official finish” at 3.00 pm. We have restructured the internal timings of the school day and from the beginning of September all students will normally be dismissed at 3.00 pm. The start of the school day remains as 8.25 am for students. Prefects at Brighton Hill Congratulations to those Year 10 students who have been appointed as Prefects and Senior Prefects during this term. Appointment as a Senior Prefects entitled students to be considered for the role of Head Boy and Head Girl. The standard of contenders was very high and I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our new Head Girl, K Mahoney, Deputy Head Girl, H Parker, Head Boy, E Clark, and Deputy Head Boy P Christie on their appointments. I am confident that all four will be very successful during their term of office. Flexible Learning Centre From September we will be opening our new Flexible Leaning Centre (FLC), designed to provide a focus for a range of learning support and wider needs. Staff attached to the new FLC will, therefore, coordinate a wide range of student and family support services, including links with outside agencies, in order to fully embrace our commitment to inclusion. The FLC will be located in what is now the school Library. The Library will be re-sited to Room R1 (currently Learning Support) refurbishment of which will be completed in time for September. The Library non-fiction stock has been reduced and some elements redistributed around subject Departments. We have also subscribed to a web-based service, Eclipse.net, in order to enhance our Library facility. The establishing of the FLC and the review of our Library service are just two of the more visible changes which we are preparing for September as part of our ongoing programme of school improvement. Exam Results Exam Results will be published on Thursday, 23 August 2012 – results for students from Year 11 will be available between 10.00 am to 11.00 am. Results for students from Year 10 between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon. School Uniform Parents and students are reminded that our new school uniform policy comes into force from September 2012. We have consulted widely on this issue before establishing our policy in agreement with the Interim Executive Board. The standard of students’ presentation is very important and we look forward to your support in ensuring that our uniform expectations are fully met. Please see the school website for details. New Intake Miss Williams and her team have been very busy the last few weeks preparing to welcome our new Year 7 intake in September. We have held a number of induction activities in order to ensure that our new students will be happy from the very start at Brighton Hill and that they will be able to immediately begin to make good progress in their new secondary school. We are also looking forward to welcoming a number of our new students to our Summer School beginning on 25 July 2012. Finally, it just remains for me to wish all members of our school community a happy and safe summer break. Let us hope the weather picks up! School reopens for all students on Wednesday, 5 September 2012 at 8.25 am. All staff will be in school from Monday, 3 September if you wish to make contact. Mr B Coley, Assistant Headteacher TUTOR GROUPS Through previous communication, from this September, our Tutor Group structure will change. Year 7 students will be tutored in a horizontal structure, whilst Years 8 to 11 will remain in the vertical structure; in addition the number of tutor groups will reduce from nine to six, in all communities and in Year 7. To assist all parties, prior to students returning on Wednesday 5 September, we shall be publishing a list of Tutor Group bases on our website so that all students can familiarise themselves as to where their tutor base will be located. On Wednesday 5 September, all students in Years 8 to 11 should be in school and in their tutor base for 8.25am; Year 7s should meet in the Community Hall, for 8.25am. I am hoping to publish the tutor group list/bases before the end of term but please realise that this may not be available until September, on our return, during the INSET days; it will be available BEFORE students return to school. Mr B Coley, Assistant Headteacher HATCH WARREN SCHOOL SITE Please can we ask that all students from Brighton Hill Community School do not use Hatch Warren as a walk through on their way home. When this is happening it is causing disruption to the departure of Hatch Warren students as well as disturbing after school clubs. We would therefore ask all Brighton Hill students to walk around the Hatch Warren site on their way home. Ms J Halsey, Leadership Team PARENTS AND STAFF PRAYER BREAKFAST God is doing some exciting work in Brighton Hill Community College. Mrs S Roberts, Science Faculty JUNIOR SCHOOLS DANCE FESTIVAL – THURSDAY 28 JUNE On Thursday, 28 June, eleven Year 10 Dance Leaders hosted the Junior Schools Dance Festival where Year 5 students from the primary schools were invited to take part in dance workshops. St Marks C of E Primary School, North Waltham Primary School and Cliddesden Primary School visited Brighton Hill Community College and spent the day learning two group dances, based on the theme of ‘The Olympics.’ It was so clear from early on in the day that the primary school students were thoroughly enjoying all aspects of the day, as were the Brighton Hill Community College Dance leaders – although everyone felt pretty worn out by the end of the day. The parents of the primary school students were invited to see their performances and spoke incredibly highly of the talents and leadership qualities of our leaders. A big thank you to the students of St Marks C of E, North Waltham and Cliddesden for coming to our event and an even bigger thank you to the following girls for being such fantastic leaders on the day: H Parker, C Pharo, E McCluskey, A Dillon, S Grainger, S Frost, D Butler, G Holder, E Wilson, G Case and J Swoffer. WELL DONE GIRLS!! Miss V Drinkwater THE UKULELE PROJECT – KS3 MUSIC LESSONS This half term Year 7 and Year 8 students have been learning to play the ukulele in music lessons. The ukulele has previously been a focus in KS2 music lessons, provided by Hampshire Music Service in some Primary Schools, and this has been a fantastic opportunity for our students to recap and extend their learning. Some students already own a ukulele and we hope that this unit of work has given students the skills they need to get started at home. Throughout The Ukulele Project students learnt the history of the string instrument, how to tune it and how to play four chords. This unit of work linked closely with earlier topics studied throughout KS3, such as The Blues and Popular Song, in which students sang, improvised and composed melodies to fit with three chords in a given structure. After a sequence of lessons focusing on ukulele playing techniques and the reading of chord symbols, Year 7 rehearsed and performed the chords and lyrics of “Price Tag” by Jessie J and Year 8s performed “Five Years Time” by Noah and the Whale. The Music Department would like to thank the BHCCA for their generous donation to fund The Ukulele Project, which will now become a permanent feature of our KS3 music curriculum, and will hopefully inspire and give confidence to more of our students to learn to sing or to play an instrument. Mrs C Rowe, Head of Music STUDENT SUPPORT – HAWTHORN PROJECT Rachael Thomas and I have been involved in the Hawthorn Project in conjunction with a palliative care social worker and a voluntary artist at St Michaels Hospice. The aim of the project was to break down barriers and myths about death and dying. The project involved M Adams AN3, J Chapman AN5, A Culver AN2, B Marshall AN3, C Burns-Deuchar AN3, A Tollett SY6, L Ruffle BA1, S Nicholls BA2, J Arnold BA9 and C Mears BA1, all Year 7 students who visited the Hospice for four afternoons to complete a piece of artwork coupled with terminally ill day-care patients. They produced one combined piece of artwork with an Olympic theme. In the first week students said afterwards that they thought they would be seeing patients at their bedside and were surprised that the patients were living normal lives. Each week the room was full of laughter and fun, the students and patients got to know their partners well, and found that they had more in common than they expected, allowing them to rapidly build a relationship with each other. On the celebratory week a journalist from the Gazette newspaper attended. The staff members stated that the students were a great credit to their school and we were very proud of how they conducted themselves. The patients and students exchanged gifts which they had created for each other and gave speeches about their experiences on the project, it was fascinating and moving to hear how they felt, examples such as I will never forget my partner, thank you for an experience I will never forget etc. The piece of art work will appear in the Gazette and be displayed at school where the patients will be invited to come and view it. Aimee Crutchfield, Student Support Worker ROME SUMMER TERM As the summer holidays are fast approaching there is no rest within the Rome Community as it has been another busy term for Rome and all its members. Community competitions have been running through the term, including a kite design and kite making competitions and the highly competitive rounders competition taking centre stage (when the dreadful English weather hasn’t stopped us!). The group stages are finished and now we are eagerly awaiting the next round of semi-finals and finals to see which tutor group will be crowned rounders champions 2012. The semi-finals line up as Rome 1 Vs Rome 3 and Rome 8 Vs Rome 9. On Thursday 12 July Brighton Hill Sports Day takes place again and as defending champions Rome have a lot to prove. Good luck to all those competing on behalf of the community. There have been some changes to the Rome Tutor team this term with Mrs Lucas, Tutor of Rome 6 sadly leaving Brighton Hill, but the very happy return of Miss Lambert with Rome 3 for September. We also can’t forget our lovely and talented Year 11 students who have sadly left us after a fantastic 5 years within the community; good luck to all of you in all your exam results and to new pastures wherever they may be. With the Year 11 students leaving this has opened up new roles and responsibilities for the current Year 10 students to step into, and they have done so with great enthusiasm. Congratulations go to K Mahoney, G Croft, C Pharo, H Parker, C Horne and P Wittering who have all been appointed senior prefects, with a special mention to K Mahoney who has been elected the new head girl and H Parker assistant head girl. Rome has also seen their new crop of community prefects appointed who have quickly taken to their new roles. Congratulations go to A Husband, A Knight and R Brown with special mention to our new Rome Community Captains, K Crossley and M Ho. To all the students within Rome, thank you for another excellent year, have a lovely well earned break over the summer holidays and we look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready to go in September.
