The CHRISTMAS STORY
Part 3 - His Name is JESUS
Series Text: Matthew 1:18-23 NLT & Isaiah 7:14 NLT
Matthew 1:18-23 NLT
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to
Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became
pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a
righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the
engagement quietly. As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your
wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son,
and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him
Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’”
Isaiah 7:14 NLT
All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a
child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with
us’).
Luke 1:26-35 NLT
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a
village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man
named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings,
favored woman! The Lord is with you!” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what
the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found
favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He
will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him
the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will
never end!” Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” The angel
replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of
God.
Luke 2:21 NLT
Eight days later, when the baby was circumcised, he was named Jesus, the name given
him by the angel even before he was conceived.
Last Week’s Message: “Conceived by the Holy Spirit”
God has a “name” for what He is wanting to see “conceived” in your life.
Today’s Message: “His Name is JESUS”
Matthew 1:21 NLT
And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from
their sins.
What is the importance of a NAME?
Proverbs 22:1 NIV
A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or
gold.
What does our name, say to others, about us?
Why did God give His Son THAT name?
Hebrews 1:3-4 NIV
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being,
sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he
sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to
the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
Jesus has many titles: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace, Savior, Lord, Master, Son of God, Son of Man, Son of the Most High, Immanuel,
Teacher, Rabbi, King of kings, Lord of lords, the Second Adam, Alpha & Omega, My
Beloved Son, the Christ, the Good Shepherd, the Way-the Truth-the Life, the Door of the
sheep, Great High Priest, the Holy One of God, King of the Jews, the Lion and the Lamb,
Light of the World, Mediator, Messiah, the Root and Offspring of David, the Bright and
Morning Star, Lily of the Valley, the Healing Balm of Gilead, the Rose of Sharon, the
Nazarene, the Only Begotten Son, Redeemer, the Resurrection and the Life, the Rock, the

What is the significance of His Name…JESUS?
Philippians 2:6-11 NLT
Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.
Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was
born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in
obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to
the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and
every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus DESCENDED into Hell.
Jesus REAPPEARED on the earth for 40 days after His resurrection.
Jesus ASCENDED into Heaven.
Ephesians 1:19-23 NLT
I also pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who
believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated
him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above
any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else—not only in this world but also
in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made
him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church is his body; it is
made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.
1 John 3:8 NKJV
He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose
the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
“And she will have a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from
their sins.”
