2014 February Newsletter

February
2014
Woodlands Edge has great trails! If you have a
keen sense of adventure and desire to explore,
then our new "Adventure Trails" program
is for you, whatever your age.
We recently had a GeoCaching event that was a
lot of fun. From this we will be forming a
new "Adventure Trails" program. There will be
something for everyone. Children who can read
will love getting involved in solving the clues and
finding "treasures", and smaller children can enjoy
the fresh air and exercise. Teens and adults will
be challenged by advanced placements that have
more difficult terrain and much harder clues.
Take a group of friends of any age out on a Adventure Trails walk for an
afternoon of fun and entertainment in the great outdoors.
Explore the many treasures our trails have to offer and have fun!

Designed to provide residents a place to view and share announcements,
look-up contact information for neighbors, set up clubhouse/pool
reservations, post on a community message board, etc. In order to view and
utilize the website - you will first need to register your family. When you
register YOU decide what contact information is visible to other registered
residents. The Association office verifies all registrations are current
Woodlands Edge residents before approving. Log-in information is then sent
via email. Once logged-in be sure to “subscribe” to particular areas of
interest on the message board if you would like to be emailed when
there are new postings.
*Please add yourself to the Professional Directory as well. We often have
residents call to ask if we know of someone in the neighborhood that works in
a specific field. We especially want to build the “BABYSITTING” section
where residents can go to find babysitters in the neighborhood!
If you have any questions, email [email protected].

They may be a neighborhood full of construction and lots yet to be
built on, but the early residents of OverCreek really know how to get
the neighborly camaraderie started off right! They have already had a
few parties to get to know each other. One of their first get-togethers
was a BBQ back in September. Since then they have had a
Christmas Party and in January the ladies of OverCreek went out for
a ladies night at Bravo. Looking forward to seeing friendships form
even more in OverCreek!

Stephen & Cristin
Meet the Bankson Family
Stephen & Cristin live in one of the newest Woodlands
Edge neighborhoods—OverCreek—on Ledge Rock
Cove. Stephen is the Director of Underwriting at US
Able Life. They have two children: Hailee (10 years
old) and Parker (6 years old) who are both active
Woodlands Edge Explore and Discover Scouts
(WEEDS). Both children attend Little Rock Christian
Academy. They don’t really have any pets, unless a
recent Arkansas State “Fair fish” counts (that is still
alive)! For Christmas the kids received an aquarium so the
fair fish could have some friends!!
Stephen’s father moved around as a cook in the Federal
Prison system & Cristin’s father was in the Army, so
they both moved around quite a bit as children. “Home
is where you are!”
Stephen & Cristin met in college at Pittsburg State University, a small school in southeastern Kansas. Stephen
earned a degree in Political Science while Cristin earned a Marketing degree.
The Bankson’s most enjoy being involved in their children’s lives & relaxing when time permits. You may see
them enjoying time as a family together at their favorite
in-town restaurant, Big Orange.
The Bankson’s are active in the community (and have
been since their home began construction). Both
children are involved in the WEEDS program while
Cristin helps with the Activities Committee and
WEEDS planning when needed. She also helps
organize block parties and gatherings for the OverCreek
residents.
“We moved to Little Rock about a year & a half ago
from the Indianapolis area. We are adjusting to living
in a smaller area, but have been over-the-top happy
with our decision to move into Woodlands Edge. The
genuine, caring people we have met here have been
amazing!” - The Bankson Family

NEXT WEEDS EVENT
February 14th—Owl Prowl
Woodlands Edge Explore and Discover Scouts
*Contact [email protected]
The WEEDScouts, WEEDSeeds and their families have been busy the past several months:
In October the WEEDS camped out in our park. We pitched tents and built a fire. We told stories,
sang songs, and roasted hotdogs and marshmallows. We woke to the dawn chorus of birds and
even made a morning fire before rushing around to get everything stowed away before it rained.
In November our friend, Miss Ann Veach was missing but we
found a mysterious note. We learned how to use compasses and
directions to follow her instructions. Each note led to another note
on the trail until we found our missing person resting at Scout
Point. If you don't know where Scout Point is, you will have to ask
a Scout.
In December we played some listening games at the
park and learned how to use our ears to find people
moving around us when we are blindfolded.
In January the WEEDS families and friends
participated in the first annual Great Race Geocaching
Event. It was a good time to enjoy our beautiful woods
and trails because it was not too hot, and the normal
hazards of the warmer months (ticks, chiggers, poisonous
snakes, poison ivy) were not a problem. A great team of
neighbors (Greg Jones, Don and Diane Johnson, David
Estes, Jason Knoernschild, Susan Dodson Smith, Michele
Pyne and Nancy Welsh) planned the event, hid 12 caches
and recorded the GPS coordinates. Nine teams with a total of 42 geo-cachers hiked through
our woods in search of the hidden "treasures." Afterwards they gathered at our campfire
circle for "Happy Camper Hamburger Stew" roasted hotdogs and S'mores. Thanks to those
who provided equipment for our campfire meal: Sarah DeClerk, Betsy Meyers, and Alvin
Weintraub. Thanks to Larry Welsh for building and tending our fire.
The Geocaches are still out there!!! If your family would like to search for the caches, the
information is on our website: www.woodlandsedgepoa.com Look under these tabs:
Residents, Message Board, Hobbies. Please sign the logbook inside the caches, and feel
free to exchange some of the treasure. (Put something in, take something out.) Then let us
know which one you found by leaving a post on the website.
On Friday, February 14th (6-8pm), we are going on an "Owl Prowl". We chose that date
because we LOVE owls, and it will be easier to see things as we hike in the woods under a
full moon. Our neighbor, David Rouby will tell us about owl anatomy and behavior around
our fire-circle, before we head out into the woods looking and calling for owls. When we
return to our fire-circle, Mr. David will share his knowledge
of owl legends and mythology and we can all take turns
sharing our stories as well.
Participants should bring a campchair and/or blanket, a flashlight,
and if you wish a hot or cold
beverage or binoculars. Please
remember to wear clothing
appropriate for the weather. If you
have not yet registered your child
for WEEDS, please click here—

NEIGHBORHOOD DEVELOPMENT UPDATE:
As new home construction and sales
continue in The Woods with beautiful
patio homes and in the OverCreek
neighborhood, Rocket Properties has
begun development of two new phases
of both neighborhoods. By this
summer, 21 new patio home lots will be ready for home
construction in the second phase of The Woods located on the east
side of Woodlands Trail. In addition, development has begun on 55
new home sites in the second phase of OverCreek. These lots will
be around one-quarter acre in size (~100’ x 120’) and will feature
generous greenspaces behind every new home site.
The Preserve at Woodlands Edge, the long awaited estate lot
neighborhood, was just opened to builders with pre-sale buyers. In
November 2013, before pavement was complete, 13 lots ranging
from 1/2 to 1 acre in size were offered for sale. Six of those lots
sold at that time and two additional lots have sold since then.
Currently there are 5 unsold lots with 3 additional sales pending.
These lots are embedded in exceptionally deep greenspaces and
convey a real sense of living in a forest.
Planning is now underway for the next phase of The Preserve
which is anticipated to be ready in about a year.

WHY EXISTING HEALTHY URBAN TREES ARE SO VALUABLE
Posted by Neil Norton on January 31, 2014 at 2:00pm—The Grove
Urban Trees are our oldest and hardest working residents. Existing healthy urban trees with a lifespan of more
than 20 years are difficult to replace with replanting or tree banking. An existing tree is like a million dollars that
has compounded in value over 100 years, while a fine or actually replanting is like one hundred dollars that has
yet to compound. To replace one with the other is like saying 1 million dollars (actually 1.4 million using $100,
compounding 100 years @ 10% interest) equals 100 dollars. Yes, it is important to invest in the future by
replanting, but it is not the same as preserving an existing healthy tree. Does tree value really compound like
money and interest? In a recent article published in The Dirt, J. Green states, "Humans’ growth spurts stop by
late adolescence, but trees accelerate their growth and get bigger as they age."
Moreover, the ecosystem created around the tree in the soil takes decades to
develop. Trees require less roots in good soil than poor soil so you can have
healthy trees in less space for when you do plant that tree. While trees are
typically easily planted, especially for the enthusiast, but not all trees are planted
and maintained equally. If the tree is being planted by a municipality you also
have to worry about the management of the tree planting program, which can be
expensive. The real kicker is the problem of land. Land to grow large trees with
critical root zones that can take up to 6,000 square feet can be very expensive
and scarce in an urban area. When such pressure exists on the land, it is
difficult for large trees to have enough land to grow on. For these reasons,
treasure the existing healthy urban tree, and do your utmost to convey its value
before it is removed, for it will not be easily replaced.
