May 2017 - Kingston Unitarian Fellowship

May 2017
Sunday Services
Services take place Sundays, 10:30am
at the Fellowship, 206 Concession
Street. Enter via the rear entrance.
May 7 “Carrying Our Vision
Forward”
Participating in the building of beloved
community requires something from
each of us. Some days what is required
is clear and we see where we are going,
and some days are shrouded in
mystery. In KUF’s covenant we say,
“May we learn to dwell together in
peace; seek the truth in love, and build
bridges of understanding as we work
together to create a more just and
loving world.” How can trust,
courageous love, and our never-ending
quest for Truth help us to reach for our
vision of what this free faith can be?
And to offer it both in this congregation
and in the larger community? Rev.
Beckett Coppola speaking.

May 28 “Thoreau’s Walden”
Henry David Thoreau spent two years
living in a one-room cabin on the
shores of Walden Pond starting in
1845. He embraced simplicity and
mindfulness over a hundred years
before they became contemporary paths
to spiritual development. His direct
experience of mystery and wonder in
nature has become one of the sources
from which Unitarian Universalists
draw inspiration. His words still have a
lot to say to us today. Rev. Strecker
speaking.

benefit of conversation; the ability to
clarify and ask questions, to hear
someone's tone of voice and read body

people can get hurt.
Email is great for scheduling meeting

Facebook is great for sharing photos

This past month has been an emotional
whirl wind for me. Our candidate
minister, Rev. Beckett Coppola, is on
board to visit us. Thank you again, how
can we say thank you enough, to the
MSC group for their dedication to our
congregation, to each other and to the
process of finding a settled Minister.
Also, the work the board has been
doing on policy review and updates has
consumed me in a different way. Our
loss of a KUF member has deeply
affected me. Why do good people die
and how shall we live in grief? Those
who were able to attend her celebration
of life had the privilege of witnessing
and sharing in our goodbyes to a new
and valued member.
April 29th to May 7th is CANDIDATE

have been part of planning the event,
singing songs, leading the ritual and

liberty, and justice for all” and
“Respect for the interdependent web of

International LetterWriting Report
April 23, 2017
by Barbara Dick and Marlene Phillips
On April 23, 10 members of KUF
signed 30 letters to the President and
the Minister of Internal Affairs in
Belarus as well as the Belarusian
Ambassador in Ottawa, on behalf of
Larysa Schiryakova, a journalist in
Belarus. The Belarusian authorities are
threatening to take her 10-year-old son
away from her in retaliation for her
critical reporting of events in the
country including the ongoing
crackdown against peaceful protestors.
We also signed three petitions on
behalf of prisoners of conscience in
China and Iran, and LGBTI people who
have been harassed, abused, and
imprisoned in Tunesia.
The next AI letter-writing table will be
held after service on May 21.

Andy and I are back from our three

Child Haven home, near Chennai. We
are SO pumped to enjoy Kingston's
Child Haven fundraiser, which will be
6:30 - 9:30 on Saturday, June 17. For
us, it will be a big celebration of
Kingston's contributions to Child
Haven International.
We have a new venue: Christ Church
Parish Hall, 990 Sydenham Rd. It has a
big, industrial kitchen for our caterer,
Jack Francis to prepare the wonderful
Indian savouries and sweets we enjoy
so much. There's plenty of space for the
silent and live auction of Indian
handicrafts. It also has a big, open
dance floor for Bollywood dancers,
inviting more participants to join in.
Tickets will be available after May and
June KUF services. Please bring some
friends. It's wonderful to contribute so
directly to destitute children, and it's a
great party, too!
