A LETTTER FROM OUR BISHOP
CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Dear Friends in Christ,
Right now, many American families are struggling to make
ends meet. As people are laid off, lose homes to
foreclosure, lose health insurance, and watch their
retirement funds disappear; it may be difficult to think of
others in need. However, financial struggles have become
even harder for the 37 million Americans who have been
living in poverty.
For nearly 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human
Development (CCHD) has offered a solution to poverty by
funding low-income community groups all over the United
States that find lasting solutions to the root causes of
poverty. CCHD supports the poor and low-income in
acquiring affordable housing, fair wages, access to health
care and vocational training. The leaders of CCHD-funded
groups are low-income community members who want to
change their situation for a lifetime.
In Catholic social teaching, we are called to bring glad
tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and
recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free.
(Lk 4:18) Our support of CCHD is vital to solving poverty
in the United States. Thank you for your generosity. Please
join me in praying for those affected by the weak economy,
those whose struggles are magnified by it, and those who
are working to create solutions to it.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CORNER
For the next few weeks, the “Social Justice Corner” will be
dedicated to offering alternatives to a commercial Christmas.
This Christmas and New Year, may the Spirit of our Lord
Jesus Christ be born anew in our world and in our hearts!
Bread for the World Christmas Cards are available again
this year. Packets of ten cards and envelopes may be
purchased for only $10. Three different card designs are
offered. Each design features a photograph and a biblical
passage. This organization supports the work of photographers from developing countries. Christmas cards – along
with gift items like t-shirts and tote bags – can be ordered at
www.breadfortheworld.org.
What to get someone who has everything? How about
donating in his/her name to a favorite charity? Consider
giving to our local chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul
Society. Through the efforts of this group, many people in
our parish and local community have been given food and
other types of assistance. Place your donation made payable
to ‘St. Vincent de Paul Society’ in the collection basket or
bring it to the parish office.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL
ELECTION 2009
——
NOVEMBER 21-22
Next weekend, you will be asked to vote for up to four
of the candidates listed on these two pages. Thank you
to these parishioners who are willing to serve. Our
parish community.
A Parish Pastoral Council, is an advisory body to the
Pastor. It serves to relay concerns of the parish to him,
attempts to improve/foster communications to and from
the Pastor and provides suggestions and new initiatives
to promote the functioning and spiritual development
of the parish. Since Vatican II the Church has
encouraged pastors to have Councils to assist them in
their governance of their parishes.
A parish council is pastoral in that it attempts to
provide resources and methods to serve the people of
the parish as they engage in the mission of the church.
It is a representative body that endeavors to listen to
parishioners and then faithfully present expressed
concerns, ideas and questions to the pastor so that faith
needs are met. The Council endeavors to foster the
spiritual growth of individuals and challenges the
parish to grow in response to the gospel. It also
challenges parishioners and organizations to work
together collaboratively.
Please read over the brief information about each of the
sixteen candidates and prayerfully consider your choice
