Lake Worth Christian School Connection Growing Christian Leaders since 1957 4th Quarter 2011-2012 Teaming Up for a Better Tomorrow The Annual Golf Tournament and Auction Tommy Murphy is comfortable on the golf course as he takes a swing. The proud golf tournament winners, led by sponsors Rich McCarthy and Frank Dorso, accept their trophies. The players not only get to enjoy the game, but also take some time to socialize on the green. April 21st started out as a rainy, gloomy day, but that did not put a stop to the annual golf tournament. God held the rain off long enough for golfers to enjoy an amazing day on the green. Thanks to sponsors Tire Kingdom, Roadway Tires, and the Sarkela family, and all those who worked so hard to make the event happen. The tournament brought in $18,000! The fun continued that evening with the annual auction. It was a night of bidding on exciting items, eating delicious food, and visiting with friends. Auction Director Deborah Murphy did a superb job organizing the event, which raised $40,136.55! The “Gift from the Heart” portion of the earnings paired with the Fall Drive donations have made it possible for us to bring in our new elementary playground in June. We cannot wait to see the little ones enjoying it! Let’s keep the momentum going and save November 17th because we are moving the auction to the fall. Middle and High School Spiritual Emphasis Week Spiritual Emphasis Week is perhaps one of the best weeks of the school year, and this year was no exception. It is an event that the whole school participates in with services for the high school and middle school students and staff and another for the elementary school students and staff. April 2-5, the middle and high school students attended a chapel service each morning. Some of the services began with a game or a humorous student talent that captured the audience’s attention. A few days a week we had the privilege to be led in a powerful time of praise and worship. J-Mack, “Student Minister Extraordinaire” from Journey Church, delivered a heartfelt message each day; the four topics he covered were love, repentance, forgiveness, and faith. The teachings were inspirational and applicable to everyday life. Special thanks to Pastor Phillip, J-Mack, and the chapel committee for all their hard work and the time they dedicated to making this week amazing. Above: Pastor Phillip Harrelson, head of the chapel committee, organized the events for the week, and J-Mack, the guest speaker for the week, shared powerful messages each day. Wise with Words Writing Contest Winners Students at Lake Worth Christian School do not just write for English class, but also often enter their writings into contests. One such contest was held, the Boynton Beach Sister City Competition, to ask students about the ever changing world and to grapple with a modern problem plaguing society. Juniors Stephen Harwood and Mitchell Shropshire won first and second place respectively in the writing portion of the competition. Stephen Harwood’s essay was sent off to China to be displayed with the rest of the first place essays. Stephen Harwood received a check for $100 and, Mitchell Shropshire received a check for $75 as prizes for the contest. Led by Seth Carter, the student body stands together to praise and worship God as a family. A group of seniors lift their voices in praise to God during the heart-felt worship session. Top of the Class 2012 Valedictorian and Salutatorian With grade point averages just a few tenths of a percent apart, seniors Corinne Morres and Gioia Russo are LWCS Valedictorian and Salutatorian for the class of 2012. Both ladies were Pathfinder nominees this year, Corinne for academic excellence and Gioia for the performing arts. Throughout their high school careers they have both gained hundreds of service hours and received countless academic awards as their hard work paid off. They have both left a lasting impression on the school that will not be forgotten; we are excited to see what God has planned for them. Corinne Morres, valedictorian for the class of 2012, plans to attend University of Florida for pharmacy. 2012 salutatorian Gioia Russo plans to attend Florida Atlantic University as a Pre-Med major. Sports Update Slide to Score Batter Up Defender Baseball Lady Defender Softball The Lady Defenders’ softball team worked hard this season. They lost a close regional game against Masters Academy to end a great season. With many players returning next year, head coach Mark Kuebler and assistant coaches Jim Painter and Janel Kauffman have very high hopes for the team next year. Senior Mackenzie Morrell, who accepted a softball scholarship to Palm Beach State College, warms up before the game. The team poses for a picture before one of their big games. Game-Set-Match Defender Tennis Our school has been participating in the sport of tennis for three years now, and each year the team improves. For the first time in many years, we had two students, Alyssa Maddox and Huiying Kin, reach the second day of competition, and we are very proud of their accomplishment. We are excited to see what the team does next year! Freshman Shane Lee goes up to the plate to try for a home-run for his team. The Varsity Boys’ baseball team included many young players this year, but the team worked extremely hard this season. They learned to work together on the field and were able to take second place in the district championship. Next year looks promising for the team as they continue to get better and develop their skills. Junior Daniel Peralta Thanks to head coach David Salley and assistant practices hitting in order to coaches Trent Lee and Jason Bryant, the players improve his swing. improved their game and created strong bonds among themselves. Recognition Athletic Banquet This year was another successful one for our sports teams. Our athletes all gathered at the 2012 athletic banquet to honor those athletes who showed their dedication in their sports throughout this season. Given to the student athlete that Coach Harwood feels has best exemplified the positive characteristics we look for in our athletes, the Defender Award was given to Bruno Kömel. The teams and coaches were all recognized for their hard work this year. Above: Senior Alyssa Maddox serves up the ball for a game point. To the left: The tennis team prepares to leave for their next match. Senior Mackenzie Morrell received the 2012 Athlete of the Year award for being an outstanding athlete in every sport she played. Seniors Jordany Dominique and Alyssa Maddox are awarded the 2012 Norm Teitsma Memorial Scholarship for their leadership, academics, and athletics. One Last Time As the end of year approaches, seniors often find the last few moments of their senior year to be bittersweet. They are excited about the new challenges they will face but are sad to say goodbye to the place they have called home, and the friends they will leave behind. The seniors always close out the year with a trip, and this year the group went to Cleveland, Tennessee. They did all types of exciting activities, including zip lining, whitewater rafting, and playing paintball. They also had the opportunity to spend quality time together around the campfire as they roasted marshmallows. The seniors had a blast and will never forget the memories they made. Special thanks to Jim Harwood, Adam Fabel, and Janel Kauffman for chaperoning the trip. Senior Class Trip The seniors, chaperones, and even a few workers from Horn’s Creek Resort are all smiles at the thought of how much fun they are having on their trip! Classes resume for the 2012-2013 school year on August 15. Have an amazing summer!
