Kumbharli village is situated in the jurisdiction of Alore Shirgaon police station in the
distance of 02 k.m. from police station. The village is situated at the bank of Vashisthi River.
Population of village is 2176 out of which 2101 are hindu and 75 are muslim. Pophali is
another nearby village having population of 5360 out of which 4164 are hindu and 1143 are
muslim.
On the occasion of Ganesh festival on 21/09/2015 Hindus from Kubharli village made
immersion of Ganesh Idols in Vashisthi River. Four boys of Muslim community were waiting
on the bank of the river. When the villagers left the place of immersion two muslim boys
entered the river. They removed two Ganesh idols which were immersed by villagers. They
throw away one idol in the bushes, and defaced another. When they were trying to remove
third idol from the river the villagers came back and tried to capture them. Three boys
successfully escaped while one was caught by the villagers. People of Hindu community and
Muslim Community gathered at the place of incidence which resulted into communal tension.
There was dialogue between the people of both community and came to decision to
reimmerse the idols which were removed from the river.
An offence vide C.R.No. 32/2015, u/s. 295,34 of IPC was registered against the four
boys R/0 Pophali village. But due rumours on the same day Hindu villagers from Pophali and
Kumbharli gathered in front of Alore-Shirgaon police station. The mob was violent which
attempted to go to Sayyadwadi to make enquirey with the Muslim villagers about the
incident. On the way to sayyadwadi few villagers among the mob pelted stone and broke the
glasses of 04 State Transport buses.
The Ganesh Festival was being celebrated all over India. The situation could have
spoiled atmosphere all over, But police controlled the mob by using minimum lathi charge.
The accused responsible for rioting were arrested. The situation was handled in an unblemed
manner.
